The veterinary course that makes you an animal doctor in India is the BVSc and AH, short for Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. You join after class 12 with physics, chemistry, biology and English, mostly through NEET UG. After the degree and registration with the veterinary council, you can treat animals, work in state animal husbandry departments, join research, or run your own clinic. Here is everything a student and parent should know: duration, subjects, fees, entrance exam, jobs and pay.

What a veterinary doctor does

Many students picture a vet as someone who treats pet dogs in a city clinic. That is only one part. In India, most vets work with farm animals like cows, buffaloes, goats, sheep and poultry, because so many families depend on livestock for income. A day may include:

  • Treating sick animals and doing surgery
  • Vaccination drives against diseases that spread between animals
  • Artificial insemination and breeding advice to farmers
  • Checking meat, milk and food safety
  • Controlling diseases that pass from animals to humans
  • Caring for pets, zoo animals and wildlife

It is real medical work, just with patients who cannot tell you where it hurts.

BVSc course details: duration, eligibility and subjects

Here are the veterinary course details in one place. The BVSc is the only veterinary science course that leads to registration as a vet.

PointDetails
Course nameBVSc and AH (Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry)
Veterinary course duration5.5 years, including a compulsory internship
RegulatorVeterinary Council of India (VCI)
Subjects in class 12Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
Minimum marksA set aggregate in PCB, with relaxation for reserved categories; check the current rules
AgeAt least 17 years at admission
Main entranceNEET UG, plus state rules for state quota seats
After the degreeRegistration with the VCI or state veterinary council to practise

So if someone asks "veterinary course kitne saal ka hota hai", the answer is five and a half years, the same as MBBS. The BVSc course duration includes the internship, where you work in hospitals and on farms.

Veterinary course subjects cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, parasitology, animal nutrition, livestock production, animal genetics and breeding, medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, public health, and livestock products technology. You will handle real animals from the early years.

Veterinary entrance exam and admission

Admission to the BVSc course works in two parts:

  • All India quota: 15% of seats in government veterinary colleges (outside a few states) are filled by the VCI through counselling based on NEET UG scores.
  • State quota: the remaining seats are filled by each state through its own counselling, using NEET UG or, in some states, a state-level test.

So the veterinary exam you must focus on is NEET UG, the same exam used for MBBS and BAMS. Veterinary seats usually close at lower NEET ranks than MBBS seats, which makes BVSc a strong choice for good biology students. Read the counselling notice on vci.dahd.gov.in and your state's veterinary university website every year. Also see medical courses after 12th for other options with a NEET score.

Veterinary course fees

Government veterinary colleges, which run under state veterinary or agricultural universities, cost much less than private ones. BVSc course fees in government colleges are often in the range of tens of thousands of rupees a year. Private colleges can charge several lakh rupees a year. Hostel and mess costs are extra. Fees are fixed by each university and change, so check the prospectus before you lock a seat.

Diploma and other veterinary courses

If you cannot get a BVSc seat, there are shorter options. Several states run diploma courses in veterinary pharmacy, livestock management or animal husbandry, usually 2 years after class 10 or 12. These lead to veterinary assistant jobs, livestock assistant and veterinary field assistant posts in state departments. Short veterinary assistant courses and online veterinary courses teach basics of animal care, but they do not let you practise as a vet. Only the BVSc does that.

After the BVSc, you can do an MVSc (2 years) in a subject like surgery, medicine, pathology or animal nutrition, and then a PhD. Admission to MVSc and PhD in many universities is through ICAR exams for postgraduate seats.

Veterinarian salary in India

These are broad ranges per month. Your state, employer and practice decide the exact figure.

RoleStarting payAfter 5 to 8 years
Fresh BVSc in a private clinic or farm₹25,000 to ₹50,000₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000
Veterinary officer in a state departmentState pay scale; usually among the better-paid state posts for graduates, plus DA and allowances

Veterinary assistant or field assistant (diploma)State scale for that post; much lower than a vet officer

The veterinary officer salary is set by each state's pay rules, so the figure for one state will not match another. The same goes for veterinary inspector and assistant veterinary field officer posts. Scientists in ICAR institutes are paid on central scales. Is veterinary a good career in India

Strong points: a respected professional degree, steady government demand, the option of your own practice, and lower NEET cut-offs than MBBS. Pet care in cities is growing.

Hard points: field postings are often in rural areas, the work is physical, and you may be called at odd hours for an emergency. Private pay in the first years is not high.

If you like animals, do not mind rural work and want a professional degree, it is a solid career choice.

How to start

  1. Take PCB with English in class 11 and 12.
  2. Prepare seriously for NEET UG.
  3. Fill both VCI all-India counselling and your state counselling.
  4. Visit a veterinary hospital or dairy farm before you decide.

Compare with agriculture courses, MBBS doctor and BAMS and AYUSH if you are weighing options with your NEET score.

Questions students ask

What is BVSc course and how many years is it?

BVSc and AH is the bachelor's degree that makes you a veterinary doctor. It takes 5.5 years, including a compulsory internship. After it, you register with the veterinary council to practise.

Is NEET required for veterinary course admission?

For the 15% all-India quota seats, yes, admission is based on NEET UG and VCI counselling. Most states also use NEET UG for their own seats, while a few may use a state test. Check your state's veterinary university notice.

What is the veterinarian salary per month for freshers?

A fresh vet in a private clinic or farm usually earns about ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 a month. Government veterinary officers are paid on the state pay scale with DA and allowances, which is often higher and more secure.

What are the government veterinary jobs?

Veterinary officer or veterinary assistant surgeon in state animal husbandry departments, officer posts in the Army Remount and Veterinary Corps, scientist posts in ICAR institutes and teaching posts in veterinary colleges.

Is there a diploma veterinary course?

Yes. Several states offer 2 year diplomas in veterinary pharmacy or livestock management. They lead to veterinary assistant and field assistant jobs, but you cannot practise as a vet with a diploma.

What is the BVSc salary compared to MBBS?

Early pay for vets is usually lower than for MBBS doctors in private work. Government vet officer posts pay well by state standards. With a good clinic or specialisation, experienced vets can earn very well.
