Yes, there are real govt jobs without exam, but they are fewer than most people think and the pay is usually modest. The biggest one is India Post Gramin Dak Sevak, where selection is on 10th marks. Others include apprenticeships, sports quota posts, compassionate appointment, contract posts filled by interview, and specialist posts for experienced people. I have helped many families who were cheated by fake no exam offers, so this page also shows you how to tell a real direct recruitment notice from a scam.
Govt jobs without exam: the main options
Here is a quick list of no exam govt job routes that actually exist, who can apply and how selection works.
| Job or route | Eligibility | How you get in | Pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| India Post Gramin Dak Sevak (BPM, ABPM, Dak Sevak) | 10th pass with Maths and English, local language, 18 to 40 years | System merit list on 10th marks, then document check | TRCA ₹10,000 to ₹29,380 by post and slab |
| Apprenticeships in railways and PSUs | 10th plus ITI, or diploma or degree, as per notice | Usually merit on qualifying marks | Monthly stipend, not a salary |
| Anganwadi worker and helper | Local woman resident; qualification set by the state | Mostly merit or interview at district level | Honorarium fixed by the state |
| Sports quota posts | Sportsperson with recognised achievements | Trials, sports record and interview | Pay level of the post |
| Compassionate appointment | Dependent of a government employee who died or retired on medical grounds | Committee decides on need | Pay level of the post |
| Walk-in and contract posts | Qualification of the post (nursing, lab, research, data entry) | Interview or skill test on the day | Fixed monthly pay for the contract |
| UPSC recruitment by interview | Degree plus years of work experience | Shortlisting, then interview | Pay level printed in the advertisement |
India Post GDS: the biggest govt job without exam
Gramin Dak Sevak is the closest thing to a central govt job without exam for freshers. India Post fills thousands of GDS posts in rural post offices through online engagement. There is no written test. The official notice says applicants are shortlisted on a system generated merit list built from 10th marks.
- Posts: Branch Postmaster (BPM), Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) and Dak Sevak.
- Qualification: 10th pass with passing marks in Mathematics and English, and study of the local language up to 10th.
- Other needs: basic computer knowledge, ability to ride a cycle, and adequate means of livelihood.
- Age: 18 to 40 years. SC and ST get 5 years extra, OBC 3 years, PwBD 10 years (13 for OBC PwBD, 15 for SC and ST PwBD). EWS gets no age relaxation.
- Pay: Time Related Continuity Allowance. At first engagement, BPM gets ₹12,000 to ₹29,380 and ABPM or Dak Sevak gets ₹10,000 to ₹24,470, plus DA.
Since selection is on marks, students with 90 percent and above in 10th have the best chance. If two people have equal marks, the older candidate is placed first. GDS is not a regular departmental post, but many GDS later write the departmental exam for Postman and MTS.
Direct recruitment govt jobs: what the term really means
Many students think "direct recruitment" means no exam. It does not. In government rules, direct recruitment simply means hiring people from outside, as opposed to promotion. Most direct recruitment govt jobs still have a written test.
A clear example is Assam. Its direct recruitment drive for Grade 3 and Grade 4 posts has used a written exam, so read the selection section of each new notice. People search for the Assam direct recruitment grade 3 salary and the Assam direct recruitment grade 4 salary, but the pay depends on the post and the Assam pay band printed in the advertisement, so check the official Assam government notice for exact figures.
The same is true for direct recruitment in AP govt jobs, direct recruitment govt jobs in Karnataka and other states. Read the selection process section of the notice. If it lists a written test, CBT or skill test, it is not a no exam job.
Bank jobs without exam: is it possible?
For freshers, the answer is mostly no. SBI PO, SBI clerk, IBPS PO and clerk posts are filled only through online exams. So if someone offers you an SBI job without exam for a fee, walk away.
There are two narrow cases:
- Specialist officer posts: banks sometimes fill senior specialist or contract posts (IT, risk, law, wealth management) by shortlisting and interview. These need a professional degree and years of experience.
- Bank apprentices: some banks run apprentice schemes with a stipend for one year. Check the selection method in each notice, because many of these also have a test.
So how to get job in bank without exam? Build experience in a skill banks need, then watch for specialist posts. For a regular bank career, the exam is the way. See bank jobs for the routes.
Without exam government jobs in Tamilnadu, Karnataka and other states
State level no exam options are mostly the same types as central ones: GDS posts in that postal circle, anganwadi worker and helper posts, village level posts in some states, apprentices, and contract posts in hospitals and schemes. Government jobs without exam in Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh follow these patterns, but rules change from district to district.
- Check the district collectorate website and the state recruitment board for anganwadi, village and contract posts.
- Check the India Post GDS portal for your state circle when a new schedule opens.
- Check AIIMS, state medical colleges and government hospitals for walk-in interviews for nurses, lab technicians and data entry staff.
Direct joining job ads: how to stay safe
Ads for a direct joining job in Dhanbad, a direct joining job in Ranchi or a direct joining job in BBSR, Guwahati or Cuttack fill social media every day. Most are private sector jobs or outright scams that use words like "sarkari job" to attract you. Some warning signs:
- They ask for a registration fee, security deposit or training charge.
- The offer comes on a mobile number or a personal email ID, not an official .gov.in or .nic.in address.
- There is no advertisement number, no official notice PDF and no named department.
- They promise selection "100 percent" or "without interview".
A real government notice always names the department, gives an advertisement number, explains the selection process and is published on an official website. If you cannot find it there, do not pay anything.
Other no exam govt job routes
Apprenticeships
Railways, defence factories and many PSUs take apprentices under the Apprentices Act. Selection is often on merit of 10th and ITI marks. You get a stipend and a certificate, not a permanent job, but the training helps in later exams for railway technician and similar posts. See ITI jobs for trade wise options.
Sports quota
Railways, banks, police and central departments reserve some posts for sportspersons. Selection is through trials and your record at state, national or international level.
Compassionate appointment
If a government employee dies in service, a dependent family member may get a job on compassionate grounds, usually in a Group C post. It depends on financial need and vacancy, so it is not automatic.
Contract and walk-in posts
Government hospitals, research institutes and scheme offices hire staff on contract through walk-in interviews. These pay a fixed amount and end with the project, but they give you real government work experience.
UPSC recruitment by selection
UPSC also publishes advertisements for specialist posts filled by interview, for doctors, engineers, lawyers and scientists with experience. These are not for freshers.
Govt jobs without exam and interview: should you wait for one?
Very few posts have neither an exam nor an interview. GDS is the main one. My honest advice: do not spend years waiting for a no exam job. Apply for GDS if you have good 10th marks, but prepare for at least one exam alongside. A SSC MTS, RRB Group D or police constable exam needs 10th level maths, reasoning and GK, and gives a regular post with pension benefits and promotions.
The steno exam is a good middle path for people who type fast. In SSC Stenographer, the written test is short and the skill test in shorthand matters a lot.

Questions students ask
Which central government jobs without exams are available for freshers?
India Post Gramin Dak Sevak is the main one: selection is on a merit list made from 10th marks, for ages 18 to 40. Apprenticeships in railways and PSUs also often select on merit, but they pay a stipend and are not permanent jobs.
Is direct recruitment the same as no exam?
No. Direct recruitment only means filling a post from outside instead of by promotion. Most direct recruitment govt jobs, including the Assam Grade 3 and Grade 4 drive, have used a written exam. Always read the selection process in the notice.
What is the Assam direct recruitment grade 3 salary and Assam direct recruitment grade 4 salary?
The pay depends on the post and the Assam state pay band, which is printed in each advertisement. Check the official Assam government recruitment notice for the exact scale. These posts have been filled through a written exam, so they are not no exam jobs.
Can I get SBI jobs without exam?
Not as a fresher. SBI PO and clerk posts are filled only through online exams. Some specialist officer and contract posts for experienced professionals are filled by shortlisting and interview.
How to get government job without exam safely?
Apply only through official websites ending in .gov.in or .nic.in, and read the full notice. Never pay a fee to an agent, and treat any promise of sure selection as a scam.
Are govt jobs without exam for freshers permanent?
Most are not regular posts. GDS is a separate category with TRCA pay, apprentices get a stipend, and walk-in posts are on contract. For a regular post with full pay matrix benefits, you usually need to clear an exam.
