What is CRPF job: role and daily life

The CRPF full form is Central Reserve Police Force. It is the largest of the Central Armed Police Forces and works under the Ministry of Home Affairs. States call in CRPF companies when local police need help.

The CRPF job profile includes:

  • Internal security and law and order duty when states ask for support.
  • Anti-insurgency and anti-Naxal operations in forest and hill areas.
  • Election duty across the country.
  • Riot control and crowd duty at big events.

Life in CRPF means moving with your battalion. You may spend a few years in a tough area and then shift to a peace station. Camps can be basic, and duty hours are long during operations. CRPF also has women's units called Mahila Battalions, so girls can join as GD constables too. If you want a quieter security job, compare it with CISF before choosing your force preference.

The upper age is relaxed: SC and ST candidates get five extra years, OBC get three, and ex-servicemen get three once their service period is taken off. Ex-Agniveers get their own relaxation. Recent CRPF recruitment rules keep half of the yearly Constable GD vacancies for ex-Agniveers, and they are exempt from the physical tests and written exam for those posts. If you are thinking of the Agniveer route, keep this in mind.

CRPF GD salary per month and constable salary

The CRPF constable salary, and so the CRPF GD salary, starts with ₹21,700 basic. Every constable trade, from driver and cook to water carrier, bugler and safai karamchari, is on the same Level 3. So the CRPF tradesman salary, CRPF driver salary and CRPF cook salary all start at the same basic as a GD constable.

CRPF head constable and HC Ministerial salary

A Head Constable is on Level 4 with ₹25,500 basic. The CRPF HCM salary (Head Constable Ministerial) is the same level. This is an office post: files, records and typing. It suits 12th pass students who are good at typing and prefer desk work.

CRPF ASI salary and SI salary

An ASI is on Level 5 with ₹29,200 basic. The CRPF SI salary is Level 6, starting at ₹35,400. A sub inspector in CRPF leads a section of jawans and has more responsibility from day one.

CRPF assistant commandant salary and officer salary

The CRPF assistant commandant salary begins at ₹56,100 basic on Level 10. Above that, Deputy Commandant, Second-in-Command and Commandant are reached by promotion, as the table shows. Our CAPF AC page explains the UPSC exam for this post.

Allowances, deductions and CRPF salary after 5 years

People ask "CRPF ki salary kitni hoti hai" because the in-hand figure is higher than basic. Here is why:

  • DA is linked to prices and is set as a percent of basic. It changes every six months.
  • HRA is paid when no government house is given. City class X, Y or Z sets the rate.
  • Transport allowance is a fixed monthly amount, more in large cities.
  • Postings in difficult or operational areas can carry special allowances under central government orders.
  • From gross pay, the NPS contribution and any income tax are cut.

CRPF salary after 5 years: one increment is added every year. A constable's basic moves from ₹21,700 to about ₹25,200 after five increments. For a Head Constable, ₹25,500 becomes about ₹29,600. For a Sub-Inspector, ₹35,400 rises to roughly ₹41,100. DA is calculated on the higher basic, so the gap grows. Our guide to salary allowances explains HRA and TA rules.

CoBRA and other commando units take volunteers from serving staff. There is no separate direct bharti for them. A CRPF commando salary is the pay of his rank, plus any extra allowance the rules allow for that duty.

CRPF exam pattern and selection process

Constable GD

The SSC Constable GD paper is a one-hour computer test with 80 questions worth 2 marks each. It has four equal parts: reasoning, general knowledge, elementary maths, and English or Hindi. A wrong answer loses 0.25 marks. Then come the race (5 km in 24 minutes for men, 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes for women), height and chest checks, and a medical. Our SSC GD Constable page covers it in depth.

Constable Technical and Tradesman

From the latest CRPF tradesman notice:

  • Stages: computer based test, PST and PET, trade test (50 marks, 20 to pass), documents and medical.
  • CBT: 100 questions, 100 marks, 2 hours. Reasoning, GK, elementary maths and English or Hindi carry 25 questions each, with 0.25 negative marking.
  • Race for men: 5 km in 24 minutes for driver, mechanic, gardener, painter, carpenter, band, cobbler and tailor. 1.6 km in 10 minutes for bugler, cook, water carrier, barber, washerman and safai karamchari.
  • Driver: needs a heavy transport vehicle licence and a driving test.

Head Constable Ministerial and ASI Steno

The CRPF exam pattern for these office posts: a 90-minute CBT of 100 questions with sections on language, general aptitude, general intelligence and quantitative aptitude, and 0.25 negative marking. Then a skill test: HC Ministerial needs 35 words per minute English typing or 30 in Hindi on computer. ASI Steno needs dictation at 80 words per minute. A PST, documents and medical follow. There is no running test for these posts.

Sub-Inspector

SI comes through the SSC CPO exam: a first paper, physical tests, a second paper and the medical. Rules for this rank fill 60 percent of SI GD posts by direct recruitment, 30 percent by promotion and 10 percent by a departmental exam.

Training, probation and promotions in CRPF

New recruits go to a CRPF recruit training centre for basic training in drill, weapons, field craft, law and physical fitness. Probation is two years under CRPF recruitment rules. Pay starts from joining, so your CRPF training salary is the normal pay of your level.

The CRPF promotion rules give a clear idea of the ladder for GD staff:

  • Constable to Head Constable: 8 years of service plus junior cadre and section commander courses.
  • Head Constable to Sub-Inspector: 5 years in rank and 18 years of total service, plus courses.
  • Sub-Inspector to Inspector: 3 years in rank and platoon commander courses.
  • Inspector to Assistant Commandant: 3 years as Inspector and a refresher course.
  • Officers: AC to Deputy Commandant after 5 years, then Second-in-Command and Commandant after 5 years each, then DIG.

These are minimum periods. Actual promotion depends on vacancies, so it can take longer. A graduate who enters as SI or AC climbs much faster than a 10th pass recruit.

How to prepare for the CRPF exam

  • Fix your physical first. Run daily and build up to 5 km under 24 minutes well before the exam.
  • Study the CRPF exam syllabus from the notice: reasoning, GK, class 10 maths and one language.
  • For HC Ministerial, practise typing every day until you cross the speed with accuracy.
  • Solve previous papers and timed mock tests; manage negative marking.
  • Keep your 10th, 12th, caste and domicile certificates ready and correct.

Most students who clear the GD exam prepare for 6 to 9 months. Use our age limit guide to see how many attempts you have left.
