Indian Navy Salary and Jobs: SSR, MR and Officer Pay by Rank

The Indian Navy salary starts at ₹30,000 a month for an Agniveer (SSR or MR) in the first year, of which ₹21,000 comes in hand. A Navy officer starts as Sub Lieutenant at Level 10 with basic pay of ₹56,100, plus Military Service Pay and allowances. What a navy job is really like

The Navy guards India's coastline, sea trade routes and island territories. Sailors and officers work on ships, submarines, naval air stations and shore bases in cities like Mumbai, Visakhapatnam, Kochi and Port Blair. Life at sea means long sailing periods away from family, small living spaces and watch duties at odd hours. In return, you see the world, learn technical skills on modern ships and earn a stable government salary with free medical care and canteen facilities.

People in the Navy fall into three groups:

• Sailors: they now join as Agniveers through the SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) and MR (Matric Recruit) entries.
• Officers: they join through NDA, CDS, the 10+2 B.Tech cadet entry or graduate entries, and lead divisions on ships and bases.
• Civilians: naval dockyards and depots hire civilian staff such as tradesman mates and chargemen through separate civilian recruitment.

Navy jobs: entries, exams and who conducts them

The Indian Navy runs its own recruitment for Agniveers and many officer entries. UPSC conducts the written exam for NDA and CDS. After the written stage, officer candidates attend the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and a medical exam.

Eligibility and age limit

For Agniveer SSR and MR, the age limit is 17½ to 21 years under the Agnipath scheme. Exact birth date ranges, subject rules, minimum marks and height standards are given in each notification. Both men and women can apply for Agniveer, so there are real navy jobs for girls at the sailor level too. Women can also join as officers in many branches.

For officer entries, age limits depend on the entry and the branch. Most 12th pass officer entries are for students around 16½ to 19½ years, while graduate entries go higher. Officer cadets must be unmarried during training. Enter your date of birth below to see if you fall inside the limit.

Navy SSR and MR salary per month

All Agniveers in the three services get the same package. This answers the common questions on indian navy ssr salary and navy mr salary: in the four year term, there is no difference between the two.

The government adds an amount equal to your corpus share every month. After four years, you receive the Seva Nidhi package, about ₹11.71 lakh including interest as per the government's estimate, and it is free of income tax. There is no pension for the four year term. Life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh applies during service. Up to 25% of each batch can be taken into the regular cadre and then serve a further 15 years as regular sailors.

Indian Navy salary for officers: ranks and pay

Each Navy rank has an Army equivalent with the same pay level. Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 a month is added for officers up to the one-star rank.

Sailor ranks, MARCOS commando salary and civilian pay

A sailor who enters the regular cadre can rise through Seaman, Leading Seaman, Petty Officer and Chief Petty Officer to Master Chief Petty Officer. Each promotion moves you to a higher pay level. MARCOS commando salary: MARCOS (Marine Commandos) are volunteers from serving sailors and officers who pass very hard selection and training. They do not have a separate pay scale. They get the pay of their rank plus special allowances for their role, so a MARCOS commando salary per month is higher than that of a sailor or officer of the same rank in a normal posting.

Indian Navy civilian salary: civilian posts in naval dockyards and units are regular central government jobs on the 7th CPC pay matrix. The pay level depends on the post, from entry level trade posts to supervisory posts like chargeman. These posts have no sea duty and follow civilian service rules.

Selection process, navy exam pattern and training

1. Agniveer SSR and MR: a computer based written exam on subjects at your qualifying level, then a physical fitness test and a recruitment medical, with the exact stages listed in each notification. The navy mr exam pattern is easier than SSR, as it is set at 10th level.
2. NDA and CDS: UPSC written exam, SSB interview over about five days, medical board and merit list.
3. 10+2 B.Tech cadet entry: shortlisting on JEE Main rank, SSB interview, medical exam.

Agniveers do their basic training at INS Chilka in Odisha before joining ships or branch schools. Officer cadets from NDA and the B.Tech entry train at the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, in Kerala. Navy courses during service, such as gunnery, navigation, engineering and diving, open new specialisations and better postings.

How to prepare for the navy entrance exam

• Study plan: for SSR, revise 12th level maths, physics and English. For MR, revise 10th level science, maths and general knowledge. Three to six months of steady study is usually enough for a student who passed with decent marks.
• Swimming: learn basic swimming early. It helps in training and in some tests.
• Running and strength: practise timed running, squats and push-ups daily, aiming to beat the standard in the latest notification.
• SSB: officer candidates should practise group discussions, story writing from pictures and speaking about themselves with honesty.
• Medical: check eyesight, teeth and ears in advance; tattoos and some medical issues can lead to rejection.
