Data scientist salary is among the highest for young graduates in India, which is why searches for a data science course have grown so fast. But this field needs real maths and coding, not just a certificate. On this page I explain the data scientist salary in India for freshers and experienced people, which data science course to choose after 12th or after graduation, typical course fees, the syllabus and where data science jobs are.
All salary and fee figures here are broad ranges. They change with your city, employer, degree and, above all, your skills.
What is a data scientist job
A data scientist uses data to answer business questions and to build models that predict things. For example: which customers may stop using a service, how much stock a shop will need next month, which loan may not be repaid, or which crop area may face drought. The work mixes statistics, programming and clear thinking about the problem.
A normal week includes collecting and cleaning data (this takes most of the time), exploring it with charts, building and testing machine learning models, and explaining results to managers who are not technical. Related roles include data analyst, which focuses more on reports and dashboards, and AI engineer, which focuses on building AI systems into products.
Data scientist salary in India
| Stage | Rough yearly pay (CTC) | Rough data scientist salary per month (gross) |
|---|---|---|
| Fresher or junior data scientist | ₹5 lakh to ₹12 lakh | ₹40,000 to ₹1 lakh |
| 2 to 4 years of experience | ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh | ₹85,000 to ₹1.6 lakh |
| Senior data scientist (5 to 8 years) | ₹20 lakh to ₹40 lakh | ₹1.6 lakh to ₹3.3 lakh |
| Lead or principal (10 years and above) | ₹40 lakh and above | ₹3.3 lakh and above |
The data scientist salary for freshers is lower when you join through a general analyst role and move up, which is how many people actually enter. Freshers from top institutes with strong projects get the higher end. Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai and NCR pay the most; a data scientist salary in Pune or Delhi is usually close to the national top band. CTC and in-hand pay are different, so check our CTC to in-hand salary page.
Which data science course to choose
| Option | Data science course duration | Data science course eligibility |
|---|---|---|
| B.Tech in AI and Data Science or CSE (Data Science) | 4 years | 12th PCM; JEE Main or state CET |
| B.Sc in Data Science, Statistics or Maths | 3 to 4 years | 12th with Maths; CUET for central universities |
| Online BS in Data Science from a public institute | Up to 4 years with exit options | 12th pass with Maths in class 10, plus a qualifier course |
| M.Sc or M.Tech in Data Science, MCA, MBA in analytics | 2 years | Graduation; entrance as per the institute |
| Data science certification course | 3 to 12 months | Usually graduates or final-year students |
IIT Madras runs an online BS degree in Data Science and Applications that students can join after 12th; check its official website for the current process. For campus degrees see B.Tech courses, B.Sc courses and BCA course. An AI and data science course in B.Tech is now offered by many colleges, but compare the faculty and labs, not just the branch name.
Data science course syllabus
A sound data scientist course covers these subjects. Use this list to judge any course before you join.
- Maths: statistics, probability, linear algebra, basic calculus.
- Programming: Python is the main language; a Python data science course should cover NumPy, Pandas and plotting. R is used in some research work.
- Data handling: SQL, data cleaning, working with large files.
- Machine learning: regression, classification, clustering, model testing.
- Deep learning and AI basics: neural networks, text and image models. This is the part a data science and artificial intelligence course adds.
- Communication: charts, dashboards and explaining findings in simple words.
- Projects: at least two or three on real public data.
Data science course fees and free options
Data science course fees vary widely. A degree at a government college costs much less than at a private one; four years at a private engineering college can cost several lakh rupees. A data scientist course fee for a private certificate usually runs from about ₹20,000 to ₹3 lakh. A short data science online course of 3 months can teach Python and basic analysis, but it will not make you job-ready alone.
There are good free data science courses too. SWAYAM and NPTEL, run by the government and IITs, offer free courses in Python, statistics and machine learning, with a small fee only if you want an exam certificate. Skill India Digital also lists free skilling courses. Be careful with any data science course with placement promises. Ask for the names of real roles past students got, not just a percentage.
Data science jobs: where you can work
Data science jobs in India are found in banks and insurance, e-commerce, IT and consulting firms, hospitals and health research, telecom, logistics, startups and sports analytics. Job titles include data scientist, machine learning engineer, analytics consultant and research analyst. Data scientist jobs for freshers are fewer than for experienced people, so many start as data analysts or software engineers and move across. See software engineer for that route.
Data scientist government jobs are limited but growing. The RBI, statistical departments, research labs, ISRO and DRDO, and some PSUs hire for data and statistics roles through their own notifications. The Indian Statistical Service through UPSC suits strong statistics graduates. Check official websites for current openings.
Is data science a good career
| Good points | Hard points |
|---|---|
| High pay growth for skilled people | Needs comfort with maths and coding |
| Work in almost every industry | Entry jobs are competitive; many applicants have only a short course |
| Interesting problem solving | Tools change quickly, so learning never stops |
Data science is a good career if you enjoy numbers, patterns and logical thinking. If maths scares you, a related field like digital marketing analytics may suit you better. Not sure? Try our career counselling test.
How to start after 12th
Keep Maths in class 11 and 12. Pick a degree with strong maths and computing. From the first year, learn Python and statistics, do free government courses, and build projects you can show. Apply for internships in your third year. Compare paths on highest paying jobs in India.
Questions students ask
What is the data scientist salary per month for freshers?
A fresher data scientist usually earns about ₹5 lakh to ₹12 lakh a year, which is roughly ₹40,000 to ₹1 lakh a month before deductions. Many freshers start as analysts at lower pay and move up within one or two years.
What is the data science course duration?
A B.Tech takes 4 years, a B.Sc takes 3 to 4 years and a master's degree takes 2 years. Certificate courses run from 3 to 12 months. Short courses are best used on top of a degree.
What is the data science course eligibility after 12th?
Most degree courses need 12th with Maths. B.Tech needs PCM and an entrance such as JEE Main or a state CET. Some online degree programmes from public institutes also accept 12th pass students through a qualifier process.
Are there free data science courses?
Yes. SWAYAM and NPTEL offer free courses in Python, statistics and machine learning, and Skill India Digital lists free skilling courses. You pay only if you want a proctored exam certificate.
Is data science a good career in India?
Yes, for people who like maths, coding and problem solving. Pay grows fast with skill. But entry jobs are competitive, so you need a solid degree, real projects and steady learning.
Are there data scientist government jobs?
There are some. The RBI, statistics departments, research labs, ISRO, DRDO and some PSUs hire for data and statistics roles, and UPSC conducts the Indian Statistical Service exam. Check their official websites for notifications.
