The CLAT exam syllabus has five sections: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. CLAT UG is a 2 hour offline test of 120 multiple choice questions, one mark each, with 0.25 marks cut for every wrong answer. It is conducted once a year by the Consortium of National Law Universities for the 5 year integrated law degrees at the participating NLUs. You need 45% in class 12 (40% for SC, ST and PwD) and there is no upper age limit. Below you will find the full picture: what CLAT is for, eligibility, pattern, what each section tests, how ranks are used, careers after law and how to prepare.
All details come from the latest CLAT pages of the Consortium. Dates and fees can change, so confirm on the official website before applying.
What is CLAT exam and what is it for
CLAT full form is Common Law Admission Test. In simple words, the CLAT exam means one national law entrance exam that is used by the National Law Universities (NLUs) for their undergraduate and postgraduate law seats. When students ask "CLAT exam kya hota hai", this is the answer: it is the main door to a 5 year law degree straight after class 12, at the top public law schools in India. The CLAT exam is for students of any stream who want law as a career, and the CLAT entrance exam rank is what NLUs use to offer seats.
- CLAT UG is for 5 year integrated degrees like BA LLB (Hons). Some NLUs also offer other combinations such as BBA LLB or BSc LLB; each NLU brochure lists its courses.
- CLAT PG is for the LLM course after an LLB degree. It is a separate paper.
The latest Consortium page lists 26 participating NLUs. Many private and state universities also accept CLAT scores, but they admit students through their own process.
CLAT exam eligibility, qualification and age limit
| Point | Rule for CLAT UG |
|---|---|
| Qualification | Class 12 or equivalent from any stream |
| Minimum marks | 45% (or equivalent grade) for General; 40% for SC, ST and PwD |
| Appearing students | Can apply; must show pass proof at admission or lose the seat |
| CLAT exam age limit | No upper age limit |
| Who can sit | Indian nationals, NRIs, PIO and OCI card holders |
So the CLAT exam qualification is simple: pass class 12 with the minimum marks. Arts, Commerce and Science students all sit for the same paper. Foreign nationals apply to NLUs directly. Seats for NRIs are also handled by each NLU, not through CLAT counselling.
CLAT exam pattern, total marks and timing
| Section | Approx. questions | Share of paper |
|---|---|---|
| English Language | 22 to 26 | About 20% |
| Current Affairs, including General Knowledge | 28 to 32 | About 25% |
| Legal Reasoning | 28 to 32 | About 25% |
| Logical Reasoning | 22 to 26 | About 20% |
| Quantitative Techniques | 10 to 14 | About 10% |
| Total | 120 | 120 marks |
- CLAT exam total marks: 120, one mark per question.
- Negative marking: minus 0.25 for each wrong answer.
- CLAT exam time: 2 hours, in an afternoon slot (2 PM to 4 PM in the latest cycle). Eligible PwD candidates get 40 minutes extra.
- Mode: offline, at test centres across the country.
If two students get the same marks, the latest rules break the tie by higher marks in the legal section first, then by age (older candidate first), and then by a computerised draw.
CLAT exam syllabus and subjects in detail
CLAT tests reading, reasoning and awareness, not knowledge of law. You do not need to have studied law or legal studies in school. Here is how each of the CLAT exam subjects works in practice.
English Language
You read passages and answer questions on the main idea, the author's view, inferences, and the meaning of words and phrases. Reading speed and understanding matter more than grammar rules.
Current Affairs, including General Knowledge
Questions are based on news and events of national and international importance, along with related static background such as legal and constitutional points behind the news. Regular newspaper reading is the only reliable method.
Legal Reasoning
You get a legal principle or a passage about a law, then a set of facts, and you must apply the principle to the facts. Basic awareness of legal and public policy issues helps, but the answer must follow the principle given, not your outside knowledge.
Logical Reasoning
You identify arguments, assumptions, conclusions and inferences in short passages, and spot what strengthens or weakens an argument.
Quantitative Techniques
Basic class 10 level maths applied to data: ratios, percentages, averages, profit and loss, simple graphs and tables. This is the smallest section, but it is also where a well prepared student can score fast.
Sample papers and the official question format are published on the Consortium website. Practise those first before any other material.
Other law entrance exams: what is AILET exam
CLAT is not the only law entrance exam. The main others:
- AILET exam: the All India Law Entrance Test, held by National Law University Delhi for its BA LLB (Hons) and LLM courses. NLU Delhi does not take students through CLAT, so you need AILET for that university. AILET exam fees, pattern and eligibility are in its own admission notice on the NLU Delhi website.
- State and university tests: some state law entrance exams and university tests fill seats in state law colleges, often at much lower fees.
- CUET: some central universities admit to law or related courses using CUET scores.
The law entrance exam syllabus for most of these tests is similar: English, GK, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and some basic maths. Preparing well for CLAT covers most of them.
CLAT course details, duration and fees
The main CLAT course is the 5 year integrated law degree, so the CLAT course duration is five years (ten semesters) for UG. LLM through CLAT PG is usually one year. NLU fees are high compared to most government colleges. One NLU brochure we checked lists yearly charges of about ₹2.5 lakh before mess charges, and fees differ between NLUs. State government law colleges and university law departments cost much less. Scholarships and fee waivers for some categories are listed in individual NLU brochures.
CLAT career options and salary after law
A good NLU degree opens several paths. Common CLAT career options:
| Path | What the work is like |
|---|---|
| Litigation | Arguing cases in district courts, high courts and the Supreme Court; slow start, strong long term growth |
| Corporate law firms | Contracts, deals, compliance; long hours, higher starting pay |
| Company legal teams | In-house legal work for companies, banks and PSUs |
| Judiciary | Civil judge through state judicial service exams |
| Government and policy | Legal officer posts, research, public policy roles |
There is no single CLAT salary or after CLAT salary figure. A fresh advocate in court may earn little in the first years, while top law firm jobs pay much more. Our lawyer career guide gives realistic ranges, and the civil judge page explains the judiciary route.
How to prepare for CLAT exam
From my experience with students, CLAT rewards steady reading more than anything else. Preparation tips that work:
- Start in class 11 or early class 12: a year of steady work is enough for most students. A CLAT crash course in the final months can help with mocks, but not with reading habits.
- Read every day: one good newspaper plus one long article. This feeds both English and current affairs.
- Monthly GK notes: make short notes each month and revise them weekly.
- Legal reasoning practice: solve principle and facts passages daily. Stick to the principle given.
- Full mocks: from three months before the exam, write a full 2 hour mock every week on paper, and review every mistake.
- Accuracy first: with minus 0.25 per wrong answer, random guessing on many questions pulls your score down.
Is CLAT exam tough? The questions are not hard, but the paper is long and time is short, and competition for top NLUs is intense. Regular readers usually do well.
