The DMLT course (Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology) trains you to test blood, urine and other samples in a pathology lab. It usually takes 2 years after 12th science. Doctors depend on these reports to treat patients, so lab technicians are needed in every hospital, diagnostic centre and health centre. This page explains DMLT, BMLT and BSc MLT, with eligibility, subjects, fees, jobs and salary.
What is a medical laboratory technology course
MLT stands for Medical Laboratory Technology. A medical laboratory technology course teaches you how to collect samples, run lab machines, do tests by hand and under the microscope, and prepare reports that a pathologist signs. You do not treat patients yourself, but your accuracy decides whether the diagnosis is right.
Medical lab science is now listed as an allied health profession under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP). Rules on course standards and registration are being set up under this commission, so check the NCAHP website and your state paramedical council for the current position.
DMLT, BMLT and BSc MLT: which lab technician course to pick
| Course | Duration | Eligibility | Level of jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| DMLT (diploma) | Usually 2 years | 12th science, mostly with Biology | Lab technician, lab assistant |
| BMLT or BSc MLT (degree) | 3 years plus internship of about 6 months to 1 year in many universities | 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology | Lab technologist, senior technician, quality and research roles |
| MSc MLT | 2 years after the degree | BSc MLT or related science degree | Lab supervisor, teaching, research |
| Certificate lab assistant course | 6 months to 1 year | 10th or 12th, by institute | Helper or sample collection roles |
BMLT and BSc MLT are the same degree with different names. Some states allow DMLT holders to join the BSc MLT degree with credit for their diploma. Short certificate courses rarely meet the qualification for a government lab technician post, so choose a proper diploma or degree.
DMLT course details in Hindi: DMLT 2 saal ka diploma hai jo 12th science ke baad hota hai. Isme khoon, peshab aur doosre sample ki jaanch sikhai jati hai. BMLT course details in Hindi: BMLT 3 saal ki degree hai, iske baad internship hoti hai, aur ye senior lab posts ke liye behtar hai.
DMLT course qualification and admission
- 12th pass with Physics, Chemistry and Biology is the usual DMLT course qualification. Some institutes accept Maths in place of Biology; check before applying.
- Minimum marks are set by the state or university, often around 40% to 50%.
- Admission is mostly on 12th merit through state paramedical counselling. Some universities and AIIMS style institutes hold their own entrance for the BSc MLT course.
There is no national DMLT entrance. Watch your state paramedical board or health university website for the admission notice.
DMLT course subjects and BMLT course details
| Stage | Main subjects |
|---|---|
| DMLT Year 1 | Human anatomy and physiology, basic biochemistry, haematology basics, lab safety, sample collection |
| DMLT Year 2 | Clinical pathology, microbiology, blood banking, histopathology basics, lab management |
| BSc MLT Years 1 to 3 | Deeper biochemistry, haematology, medical microbiology, immunology, cytology, molecular methods, quality control, research methods |
| BSc MLT internship | Rotation through lab sections of a hospital |
Pathology courses like these are hands on. Lab technician exam questions in recruitment tests come from the same areas: haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, blood bank and general pathology. Revise your DMLT notes if you plan to sit for a government lab assistant exam.
DMLT course fees: government vs private college
| Course | Government institute | Private college |
|---|---|---|
| DMLT course fees | Often under ₹20,000 a year | Roughly ₹25,000 to ₹80,000 a year |
| BMLT course fees (BSc MLT) | Often ₹10,000 to ₹50,000 a year | Roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh a year |
DMLT course fees in private college seats vary by city and lab facilities. A seat in a state run institute can save your family a large amount over two years. Before paying, ask three things: which council or university recognises the course, which hospital you will train in, and whether the final exam is held by the state board or university.
Lab technician jobs after DMLT
- Hospital labs, pathology labs and diagnostic centres
- Blood banks
- Primary and community health centres under the state health department
- Research, food testing and water testing labs
- Your own collection centre, after enough experience and as local rules allow
Government lab technician jobs come from state health departments, central hospitals, railways, ESIC, AIIMS and defence hospitals. Some states also recruit lab assistants for school science labs; that is a different post, so read the notification carefully. See govt jobs after 12th and govt jobs without exam for contract posts filled on merit.
Lab technician salary and DMLT salary
| Role | Fresher (per month) | After 5 to 8 years |
|---|---|---|
| DMLT in a small private lab | About ₹8,000 to ₹15,000 | Higher as senior technician |
| DMLT salary per month in a private hospital | About ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 | Better in large city hospitals |
| BSc MLT salary in private labs | About ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 | Lab in charge and quality roles pay more |
| Government lab technician | Pay level set by each notification | Rises with DA and promotions |
Lab assistant salary is usually a little lower than a technician's. State pay differs a lot. For example, Rajasthan lab assistant salary is fixed by the state pay matrix given in the RSMSSB notification. Use our salary calculator once you know the pay level of a post. MLT salary grows mainly with skill in machines, a degree, and experience in a large lab.
Higher study after the MLT course
After DMLT, the natural next step is BSc MLT. After the degree, MSc MLT, MSc Microbiology or a course in lab quality management opens supervisor and teaching roles. Compare with other options on paramedical courses, radiology and OT technician, pharmacy courses and medical courses after 12th.
Questions students ask
What is the DMLT course full form?
DMLT stands for Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. MLT course full form is Medical Laboratory Technology, and BMLT means Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology.
What is the DMLT course duration?
DMLT usually takes 2 years after 12th science. The BSc MLT degree takes 3 years, and many universities add an internship of about 6 months to 1 year.
What are the DMLT course fees in a private college?
Private colleges often charge about ₹25,000 to ₹80,000 a year, depending on city and lab facilities. Government institutes are much cheaper. Always confirm the course is recognised before paying.
What is the lab technician salary for freshers?
Private freshers with DMLT usually earn about ₹8,000 to ₹20,000 a month, and BSc MLT holders a little more. Government posts pay as per the pay level in the notification, plus allowances.
Which is better, DMLT or BSc MLT?
BSc MLT is better for long term growth because senior and supervisor posts prefer a degree. DMLT is shorter and cheaper and gets you working sooner. You can do BSc MLT later.
Can I do the DMLT course after 12th arts?
Usually no. DMLT needs 12th science, mostly with Biology. Arts students can look at other options on our courses after 12th arts page.
