Salary at a glance

I have seen many students from small towns pick up shorthand in a local institute, clear this exam and join a ministry in Delhi. It is a quiet, steady desk job with real respect. Below I explain the job, the exam pattern, the salary per month and how to prepare.

What is a stenographer job

A stenographer writes down what an officer speaks, using shorthand (a fast writing system with short symbols), and then types it out neatly on a computer. That is the simple stenographer job meaning. In a government office, a stenographer works with a senior officer and handles:

  • Taking dictation of letters, notes and orders, then typing them correctly
  • Keeping the officer's files, meetings and appointments in order
  • Handling phone calls, emails and visitors for the officer
  • Keeping confidential papers safe

The ssc stenographer job profile is mostly office work from 9 to 5.30, five or six days a week depending on the office. Steno govt jobs are in central ministries, departments and bodies across India, though many posts are in Delhi.

Who conducts the SSC stenographer exam

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) holds the Stenographer Grade C and Grade D Examination every year for central government offices. The notice lists the departments and posts. In the latest vacancy list, Level 7 Grade C posts were in offices like the Election Commission, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Central Vigilance Commission, while Level 6 Grade C posts were in ministries like Corporate Affairs, Labour and Textiles. Grade D posts were in offices like DoPT, CBI, the Central Board of Direct Taxes, the Intelligence Bureau and the Indian Coast Guard. The list changes every cycle, so read the latest notice on ssc.gov.in.

You can compare it with other SSC exams on our SSC exams guide.

Eligibility and age limit

You must have passed class 12 or an equivalent exam from a recognised board by the date given in the notice. You also need stenography skill, because the second stage is a shorthand test. There is no minimum percentage.

Reserved groups get extra years: 5 for SC and ST, 3 for OBC, and 10 to 15 for candidates with a benchmark disability depending on category. Ex-servicemen also get relaxation. Some central government employees and widows or divorced women get extra relaxation for Group C posts. Use the checker below to see your age on the cut-off date.

SSC stenographer salary per month: pay level and breakdown

Here is the SSC stenographer salary by grade, as starting basic pay:

PostPay levelStarting basic pay
Stenographer Grade DLevel 4₹25,500
Stenographer Grade C (most offices)Level 6₹35,400
Stenographer Grade C (some offices)Level 7₹44,900

Note that Grade C is a Group B post and Grade D is a Group C post. When you compare SSC steno salary figures online, go by the pay level printed against your post in the notice, not the group name. The salary box near the top of the page shows the full monthly figure with the current DA. Your stenographer salary per month is made of:

  • Basic pay: fixed by your level, it rises by about 3% every year.
  • Dearness Allowance (DA): a percentage of basic pay, revised twice a year by the government.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): depends on city class. X cities like Delhi pay the most, then Y, then Z. You do not get HRA if you take government housing.
  • Transport Allowance: a fixed sum that is larger in metro cities.
  • Cuts from pay: the pension scheme takes 10% of your basic and DA every month, plus small amounts for insurance, and income tax if your income is taxable.

Work out your own in-hand salary with this calculator:

SSC stenographer salary after 5 years: your basic pay grows with yearly increments, and DA keeps rising. Most people also get a financial upgrade or a promotion in time. So after 5 years the in-hand pay is clearly more than the first salary. For a full guide to each allowance, read salary allowances explained.

Stenographer salary in government sector beyond SSC

Stenographer govt jobs are not only through SSC. High courts, district courts, state PSCs, state staff selection boards and bodies such as EPFO and DRDO also hire stenographers. A high court stenographer salary or court stenographer salary is set by that court's own rules or the state pay matrix, so it can be higher or lower than SSC. The same goes for EPFO stenographer salary and DRDO stenographer Grade 1 salary: read the pay level printed in that body's own notice. Many of these exams also test shorthand at 80 to 100 words per minute, so the same skill opens many doors.

Selection process and SSC stenographer exam pattern

There are two stages: a computer based test (CBT) and a skill test in stenography.

  • Time: 2 hours, with section timers of 30, 30 and 60 minutes (2 hours 40 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe).
  • Questions are objective, in Hindi and English (the English section is in English).
  • 0.25 marks are cut for every wrong answer in the latest notice. Older notices cut one-third of a mark, so always check the current rule.

Skill test: you take one dictation of 10 minutes in English or Hindi (you choose the language in the form). The speed is 100 words per minute for Grade C and 80 for Grade D. You then type it out on a computer.

Grade C40 minutes55 minutes
Grade D50 minutes65 minutes

Scribe-eligible PwBD candidates get more time. The skill test is qualifying only. Final merit is made from CBT marks, and posts are given by merit and your choice of department. The ssc stenographer exam syllabus for the CBT is close to other SSC papers: reasoning puzzles and series, current affairs and static GK, and English grammar, vocabulary and comprehension.

Stenographer course: where to learn shorthand

Many students search for a stenographer course or steno course before they even look at the exam. You have three common options:

  • ITI trade: government and private ITIs run a one year Stenographer and Secretarial Assistant trade in English or Hindi. See ITI courses.
  • Local shorthand institutes: short courses in English or Hindi shorthand plus typing.
  • Online steno course: dictation audio at set speeds is widely available. It helps for practice, but you still need a teacher to correct your outlines at the start.

Stenography course fees are low. A government ITI costs much less than a private institute, and most local courses cost a few thousand rupees in total. Steno course duration: learning the shorthand theory takes about 3 to 6 months. Building speed to 80 or 100 words per minute with clean transcription takes most students 8 to 12 months of daily practice. A stenography course in Hindi suits you if you are better in Hindi; the SSC test is offered in both languages.

Training and promotions

There is no long training like police or defence. You join, learn the office's file work on the job and complete a probation period. If you took the skill test in one language, the office may ask you to learn the other language too.

Growth comes through promotion rules of your cadre. A Grade D stenographer can move up to Grade C, and a Grade C stenographer can rise to senior secretarial posts with higher pay levels. Speed of promotion depends on the department and vacancies. Under the financial upgrade scheme, your pay level also rises after set years of service even if a promotion is late.

How to prepare for SSC stenographer

  1. Start shorthand first. It takes the longest. Practise dictation for at least 1 to 2 hours daily.
  2. Type on a computer. Build a typing speed of 30 to 35 words per minute so that transcription is easy.
  3. English is half the CBT marks. Read a newspaper daily and practise grammar and vocabulary questions.
  4. Reasoning and GK: use previous papers from SSC exams. The same topics come in SSC CHSL and SSC CGL, so you can prepare for those too.
  5. Take mock tests every week in the last three months.

Most serious students need 8 to 12 months in total. If shorthand is not for you, look at SSC MTS or the full list of govt jobs after 12th.
