ITI Jobs: Government Jobs, Salary and Private Options After ITI

Quick answerITI jobs include railway posts like Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician Grade III (Level 2, basic ₹19,900), DRDO and ISRO technician posts, paid apprenticeships, and private factory and service work. Your trade and practical skill decide the best route.

If you have finished an ITI trade, or you are about to, this guide to ITI jobs is for you. An ITI certificate in a trade like Electrician, Fitter or Mechanic Diesel opens three doors: a sarkari job through a railway or technical exam, an apprenticeship that pays a stipend while you learn, and a private job in a factory, workshop or service company. Below I list each option with the eligibility, how you get in and the starting pay, and I link to a full page for each one.

One honest point before we start. The certificate alone does not get you a job. Your trade, your marks, your practical skill and how early you start preparing decide where you land. Students who pick a demand trade, finish an apprenticeship and prepare for the railway exams side by side usually do best.

ITI govt job list: railway, defence research and space

The biggest employer of ITI holders is Indian Railways. The Railway Recruitment Boards run separate exams for each group of posts, and an ITI is the main qualification for many of them.

  • Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP): you need 10th plus ITI in trades like Fitter, Electrician, Wireman, Mechanic Diesel, Turner or Machinist. A Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in these trades is also accepted. The age limit in the latest notice was 18 to 30 years, with relaxation for reserved categories. The medical standard is strict: you need 6/6 distant vision in each eye without glasses. Read the full loco pilot page before you apply.
  • Technician Grade III: posts in trades like Fitter, Welder, Electrical, Diesel Mechanical, Carriage and Wagon, Blacksmith and many more. For these Level 2 posts, the notice says an engineering diploma does not replace the ITI or apprenticeship unless it is stated. Age limit in the latest notice: 18 to 30 years. See railway technician.
  • Group D (Level 1): posts like Track Maintainer and Pointsman. This is a class 10 level exam with a physical test. See RRB Group D.

Outside railways, two science bodies hire ITI holders. DRDO recruits Technician-A through its CEPTAM exam: 10th plus ITI, age 18 to 28 years in the latest notice, two computer based tests and a practical trade test. ISRO centres recruit Technician-B at Level 3 with a written test and a skill test, and past notices asked for at least 60 percent in the skill test. These posts are few, so watch the official sites closely. Our ISRO and DRDO page explains the bigger picture.

State governments also hire ITI holders for posts like lineman, electricity helper, pump operator, workshop attendant and jail or hospital electrician. The names, pay and rules change from state to state, so check your state electricity board and staff selection board notices.

ITI sarkari job in railways: what the work is like

Many students apply for every railway post without knowing the work. Please read this part first.

An Assistant Loco Pilot works in the engine cab with the Loco Pilot. Duty hours are long and irregular, nights and holidays included. The job pays running allowance on top of salary, and over the years you can become a Loco Pilot of goods, passenger and then mail trains. A Technician Grade III works in a loco shed, carriage depot or workshop, maintaining engines, coaches, wagons and signal equipment. The work is physical, but you usually stay in one place and work in shifts. Group D staff do track and yard work outdoors in all weather.

All three come with job security, medical facilities, railway passes and a pension through the National Pension System. Promotions come through departmental exams and seniority.

ITI jobs by trade: electrician, fitter, diesel mechanic and more

Your trade decides which doors are open. This table covers the trades students ask about most. Durations are for government ITIs under the national scheme.

TradeDurationGovernment routePrivate work
Electrician2 yearsALP, Technician Grade III (Electrical), state electricity boardsBuilding wiring, panels, factory maintenance
Fitter2 yearsALP, Technician Grade III (Fitter), DRDO, ISROMachine assembly, plant maintenance
Mechanic Diesel1 yearALP, Technician Grade III (Diesel)Vehicle workshops, generator service, transport depots

COPA (Computer Operator and Programming Assistant)1 yearData entry and office posts that ask for computer skillOffice computer work, billing, data entry
Draughtsman Civil2 yearsState works departments as per noticeDrawing work with builders and consultants

ITI electrician job: this is the most flexible trade. You can sit for railway exams, state power utility posts and get private work in any town. Many electricians later get a wiring licence from their state and take small contracts. ITI fitter job: fitters are in steady demand in railways, defence factories and manufacturing plants, and the fitter trade has some of the largest number of railway technician posts. ITI diesel mechanic job: good for workshop and transport work, and accepted for ALP. If you have not chosen a trade yet, read our ITI courses guide first.

ITI salary per month: government vs private

JobITI salary per month (starting)What changes it
Railway ALP or Technician Grade IIIBasic ₹19,900 plus DA, HRA, TACity class for HRA; ALP also gets running allowance
ISRO Technician-BBasic ₹21,700 plus allowancesCentre location and promotions
ApprenticeFixed monthly stipendRate set by the government and the employer
Private fresherRoughly ₹10,000 to ₹18,000City, company size, trade, overtime
Private, 5 to 8 years experienceRoughly ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 or moreSkill level, supervisor role, certifications

ITI electrician salary and fitter ITI salary in private jobs start in the same band, but a skilled electrician who can handle panels, PLC basics or solar work moves up faster. A diesel mechanic who knows modern engines and diagnostics also earns more. In government service, the salary is the same for every trade at the same level, and it grows with DA revisions and promotions. To understand each allowance, read salary allowances explained.

ITI private company job, apprenticeship and campus drives

Most ITI students start in the private sector, and that is a good start if you choose well. Here is how the private route works.

  1. Campus drives: many government ITIs hold ITI job campus drives where factories and service companies interview final year trainees. Ask your training officer for the placement cell list and keep your marksheet, Aadhaar and photos ready.
  2. Apprenticeship: after ITI, an apprenticeship (usually about one year) under the Apprentices Act gives you a stipend, real shop floor work and a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC). Railways, PSUs and large private plants take apprentices. Railway zones select ITI apprentices mostly on merit of marks. An Act Apprenticeship is also accepted for ALP and Technician posts.
  3. Direct interview: smaller workshops and contractors hire after a short practical test. Pay starts low, but you learn fast.

A word of caution: never pay anyone money for a job. Real government and PSU recruitment happens only through the official websites and notices.

ITI instructor salary and teaching jobs

If you like explaining things, you can become an instructor in an ITI. The route is the Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS), run by the Directorate General of Training at National Skill Training Institutes. It is a one year course. Eligibility depends on the trade: 10th plus NTC or NAC in the trade, or a diploma or degree in a related branch. NCVT wants every ITI trainer to be CITS trained, so this certificate matters.

Government ITI instructor posts are filled by state recruitment boards, and the ITI instructor salary depends on the state pay scale. Private ITIs pay less and the range is wide. Check your state technical education or skill development department for the latest instructor vacancies. For other teaching routes, see government teacher.

Which ITI pass government job should you aim for

  • Good eyesight, ready for shift duty: aim for ALP first. Prepare maths, reasoning, general science and your trade theory.
  • Want to stay in one place: Technician Grade III and workshop posts suit you better.
  • Strong in your trade with good marks: try DRDO and ISRO technician posts as well.
  • Want a higher post later: join a polytechnic through lateral entry where your state allows it. A diploma opens Junior Engineer posts. See diploma jobs.

Most students need 6 to 12 months of steady preparation for the railway CBTs. Use previous papers, practise one mock test a week and keep revising trade theory. You can also browse govt jobs after 10th and jobs after 10th for posts that need no ITI at all.

Where to check the latest ITI job notices

Vacancies, dates and cut-offs change every cycle, so I do not list them here. Check only official sources: the RRB websites for railway posts, the DRDO and ISRO websites for technician posts, the apprenticeship portal for apprentice seats, and your state staff selection board or electricity board for state posts. Read the full notification PDF before you pay any fee.

Questions students ask

Which is the best ITI govt job?

For most ITI holders, Railway Assistant Loco Pilot and Technician Grade III are the best options because they have the most posts and start at Level 2 with basic pay of ₹19,900. ISRO Technician-B starts higher at Level 3, but the posts are few. Choose based on your trade, eyesight and whether you can handle shift duty.

What is the ITI salary per month in a government job?

Railway ALP and Technician Grade III start at basic pay of ₹19,900, and ISRO Technician-B at ₹21,700. On top of basic you get DA, HRA and transport allowance, so the gross pay is higher. Use the salary calculator on this site to see the in-hand amount for your city.

Can an ITI electrician get a government job?

Yes. Electrician is one of the trades listed for Assistant Loco Pilot and for many Technician Grade III posts. State electricity boards and some state departments also hire ITI electricians as lineman or technician. Check each notice for the exact trades accepted.

Is an ITI Limited job the same as an ITI job?

No. ITI Limited is a public sector company in the telecom equipment field. Its jobs are separate recruitments with their own rules. An ITI job usually means a job that needs a certificate from an Industrial Training Institute.

Is apprenticeship necessary after ITI?

It is not compulsory, but it helps a lot. You get a stipend, real work experience and a National Apprenticeship Certificate. For railway ALP and Technician posts, a Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in the trade is also accepted.

Can a diploma holder apply for ITI posts in railways?

For Assistant Loco Pilot, a diploma in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering is accepted in place of ITI. For Technician Grade III posts, the latest notice says a diploma does not replace the ITI unless stated. Always read the qualification table in the notice.
