Bank Jobs: Every Banking Exam, Salary and Eligibility

Quick answerBank jobs in India need a graduation degree. You enter through exams by IBPS, SBI, RBI and LIC: clerk exams for ages 20 to 28 and officer exams for 20 or 21 to 30, with starting basic pay from ₹24,050 for clerks to ₹78,450 at RBI.

Bank jobs are one of the most popular routes to a secure sarkari naukri for graduates in India. Public sector banks, the Reserve Bank of India, regional rural banks and LIC together recruit thousands of clerks and officers through a handful of common exams every year. This guide groups every major option, shows who can apply and what each pays at the start, and links to a full page on each exam.

Govt bank jobs at a glance

Most govt bank jobs fall into two levels. Clerks (called Customer Service Associates or Junior Associates) handle the counter and back office. Officers (Probationary Officers and specialists) manage branches, loans and teams. All of them need a graduation degree. There is no direct bank job after 12th, but you can start preparing from your first year of college.

Age limits are for the general category on the cut-off date. Starting basic figures come from the latest notifications. On top of basic, every post pays DA, HRA or housing and other allowances, so the gross is much higher. LIC is an insurer, not a bank, but students prepare for it alongside bank exams because the papers are so similar.

Bank exams list: which one is right for you

Think of the banking exams as a ladder by difficulty and pay:

  • Entry level, more seats: IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk and IBPS RRB Office Assistant. Good first targets for fresh graduates, especially from small towns, because you are posted in your own state.
  • Officer level: IBPS PO, SBI PO and IBPS RRB Officer Scale I. Better pay and faster growth, but transfers anywhere in India (state level for RRBs).
  • Specialist officer: IBPS SO for IT, law, agriculture, HR, marketing and Rajbhasha graduates.
  • Top tier: RBI Grade B and LIC AAO. Highest starting pay, fewer seats, tougher papers.

Most serious candidates write three to five of these bank exams in a year. The syllabus overlaps heavily, so one good preparation covers many attempts.

Bank exam qualification and eligibility

The basic bank exam qualification is simple: a bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university. Arts, commerce, science and engineering graduates all compete on equal terms. A few points that trip students up:

  • Marks: most clerk and PO exams only need a pass. RBI Assistant needs 50%, and RBI Grade B (General) needs 60% in graduation or 55% in postgraduation (relaxed for SC, ST, PwBD).
  • Final year students: many notifications allow you to apply if your result comes by a fixed date. LIC AAO, for example, needs the result declared by the cut-off date. Read this line in every notification.
  • Local language: clerk exams and RBI Assistant test the language of the state you apply for. If you studied it in class 10 or 12, you may be exempt from the test.
  • Computer knowledge: most banks expect basic computer skills, and some ask for proof.
  • Specialist posts: IBPS SO and similar posts need a degree in the matching field, such as law, agriculture or IT.

If you are still in school and want to plan ahead, our guides on commerce courses after 12th and jobs after BCom show how a degree can lead into banking.

Bank exam age limit and relaxation

The banking exam age limit depends on the post. Clerks: 20 to 28 years. POs and most officers: 20 or 21 to 30 years. RRB Office Assistant starts lower at 18. On top of the upper limit, reserved categories get extra years: 5 for SC and ST, 3 for OBC (non creamy layer), and 10 or more for persons with disabilities, with separate rules for ex-servicemen and some others. Check your eligibility for any exam here:

Our page on age limits for government jobs covers relaxations across all central exams.

Bank exam syllabus: what every banking exam tests

The banking exam syllabus looks long, but it is built from the same five blocks in nearly every paper:

SubjectCommon topicsWhere it matters most
ReasoningPuzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, blood relations, codingAll prelims and mains
Quantitative AptitudeSimplification, number series, data interpretation, arithmetic word problemsAll prelims and mains
EnglishReading comprehension, error spotting, fillers, para jumblesAll exams; descriptive in PO mains
General and Banking AwarenessCurrent affairs, RBI policy, banking terms, government schemesMains, RBI and LIC exams
Computer KnowledgeBasics of hardware, software, internet, MS Office type toolsClerk and RBI Assistant mains

Practice is more important than theory here. Students who clear these exams usually do 20 to 30 puzzles, a set of simplification questions for bank exams and a set of syllogism questions every day, plus one reading comprehension. Current affairs for bank exams should cover at least the last six months before mains. Solving past bank exam questions and answers from official sample papers shows you the real level.

Bank manager salary and SBI bank jobs

Students and parents often ask "bank manager ki salary kitni hoti hai". In public sector banks, a fresh PO joins as an Assistant Manager in officer Scale I with a starting basic of ₹48,480. A branch manager is usually in Scale II or Scale III, depending on branch size. Each scale has a higher basic, and DA, HRA, special allowance and leased housing rise with it. So the bank manager salary per month is well above a fresh PO's pay, but the exact figure depends on scale, years of service and city.

SBI bank jobs follow the same pattern. A fresh SBI PO starts at ₹48,480 plus 4 advance increments, and the latest SBI notification gives an approximate CTC close to ₹22 lakh a year at its Mumbai centre. The SBI bank manager salary grows with each promotion. For exact scales, see the SBI PO page. To turn any CTC into monthly take home pay, use this tool:

Bank jobs salary: how pay works

All public sector banks follow one industry wide wage settlement, so a clerk in UCO Bank and a clerk in Punjab and Sind Bank start on the same basic. A UCO Bank job or a Punjab and Sind Bank job is filled through IBPS Clerk or IBPS PO, not through a separate bank exam, unless the bank announces a special drive on its own website. The parts of bank jobs salary are:

  • Basic pay: fixed by your scale and number of increments.
  • DA: a percentage of basic that banks revise every quarter.
  • HRA or leased flat: higher in metros and big cities.
  • Special allowance and other allowances: as per bank rules.
  • Deductions: NPS contribution and income tax.

RBI and LIC have their own scales and pay more at each level. See our guide on salary allowances for what DA, HRA and CCA mean.

Cooperative and private bank jobs for freshers

Cooperative bank jobs come from state cooperative banks and district central cooperative banks. Each state, and often each bank, runs its own cooperative bank exam, sometimes through an outside agency. The UP cooperative bank job and similar state recruitments are announced on the bank's or the state's official website. Pay is usually lower than in public sector banks and varies widely by state and bank.

Private bank jobs for freshers are filled through campus drives, walk-ins and online applications. Most roles are in sales, relationship management and operations. Pay starts lower or similar to a public sector clerk, often with targets and incentives, and there is no fixed exam pattern. A private bank job question round usually covers aptitude, basic banking and communication. Investment banking jobs are a different field altogether, mainly for finance graduates and MBAs; read our investment banker guide for that path.

How to start preparing for bank exams

Here is the plan I give students who are starting from zero:

  1. Month 1 to 2: learn the basics of quant (percentages, ratio, averages, simplification) and reasoning (puzzles, syllogism). Read one newspaper daily.
  2. Month 3 to 4: start sectional tests and one full prelims mock every week. Note every mistake in a notebook.
  3. Month 5 to 6: add mains level data interpretation, banking awareness and essay or letter writing for PO exams.
  4. Ongoing: keep a list of upcoming bank exams from the official sites, and apply to every exam you are eligible for.

For latest bank jobs and upcoming bank exams, check only official sites: ibps.in, the SBI careers page, opportunities.rbi.org.in and licindia.in. Vacancies, dates and cut-offs change every cycle. For other options after your degree, see jobs after graduation and our full government exams list.

Questions students ask

What is the qualification for bank jobs?

You need a bachelor's degree in any subject for clerk and PO exams. RBI Assistant needs 50% marks and RBI Grade B needs 60% (relaxed for SC, ST and PwBD). Specialist officer posts need a degree in the matching field.

What is the age limit for bank exams?

Clerk exams usually take 20 to 28 years and PO exams 20 or 21 to 30 years. RRB Office Assistant starts at 18. SC and ST get 5 extra years, OBC 3 years and PwBD candidates 10 or more.

Can I get a bank job after 12th?

Not through IBPS, SBI or RBI clerk and officer exams, which all need graduation. You can start a degree in any subject and prepare for bank exams during college.

What is the bank manager salary per month?

A branch manager in a public sector bank is usually in officer Scale II or III, above the ₹48,480 starting basic of a fresh PO. Gross pay depends on the scale, years of service, DA and city.

Which bank exam is the easiest to clear?

IBPS Clerk, SBI Clerk and IBPS RRB Office Assistant have the most seats and an easier level, so they are the usual first target. Officer exams and RBI or LIC exams are tougher.

How do I get a job in UCO Bank or Punjab and Sind Bank?

Public sector banks like UCO Bank and Punjab and Sind Bank recruit clerks and POs mainly through IBPS exams. You choose your preferred banks after clearing, and allotment follows your rank. Specialist drives, if any, are posted on the bank's own website.

What is the syllabus for bank exams?

Almost every bank exam tests reasoning, quantitative aptitude, English, general and banking awareness and, in some exams, computer knowledge. PO and RBI exams add descriptive writing in mains.
