The IBPS SO salary starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 a month, because every Specialist Officer joins in Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I), the same officer grade as a bank PO. DA, HRA or leased housing, special allowance and other perks are added on top. This page explains the IBPS specialist officers exam, the posts, who can apply, the exam pattern and what each specialist actually does.

What is the IBPS SO exam

IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) runs a Common Recruitment Process for Specialist Officers, called CRP SPL, for public sector banks. A Specialist Officer is a bank officer hired for a skill, not for general branch banking. Banks need people who know computers, farming, law, human resources, marketing and official language work. Instead of training a general officer for these jobs, they hire graduates and postgraduates who already have the subject knowledge.

You write one IBPS SO exam for your chosen post, and IBPS allots you to a participating bank based on your rank and preference. Banks like Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Punjab National Bank, Union Bank of India, Indian Bank and others have taken part in recent cycles. The list for each cycle is in the notification.

IBPS SO posts and eligibility

HR / Personnel OfficerGraduation plus a full time PG degree or diploma in HR, Personnel Management, Industrial Relations, Social Work or Labour Law
Marketing OfficerGraduation plus a full time MBA or PG diploma in marketing (when this post is notified)

Age limit: 20 to 30 years on the cut-off date given by IBPS. SC and ST candidates get 5 years relaxation, OBC 3 years and PwBD 10 years, with other categories listed in the notification. You must hold the qualification by the last date of application. Check your age band with relaxation here:

The application fee in the latest cycle was ₹850 for General, EWS and OBC and ₹175 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Not every post is filled every year; in the latest cycle no Marketing Officer vacancy was reported, so read the vacancy table before you plan.

IBPS specialist officer salary structure

The bank specialist officer salary is the same JMGS-I scale used for POs. Here is how it is built:

Pay itemDetail
Starting basic₹48,480 a month
Scale₹48,480 up to ₹85,920
Increments₹2,000 a year for the first seven steps, then ₹2,340 and ₹2,680
Dearness AllowancePercentage of basic, revised every quarter
HRA or leased flatDepends on the city of posting
Special allowanceA share of basic paid to officers
Other perksMedical cover, leave fare concession, NPS and others as per bank rules

So the IBPS SO salary per month starts at the same basic for every post, and the IBPS SO IT salary is no different at joining. What differs is the work, the posting and how fast you move up.

IBPS SO salary by post: IT, AFO, Law, HR and Marketing

  • IBPS SO IT officer salary: ₹48,480 basic plus allowances. IT officers handle core banking support, networks, cyber safety, ATM and digital payment systems, mostly from regional or head offices in cities. City postings mean higher HRA.
  • IBPS agriculture field officer salary: the same ₹48,480 basic. AFOs work in rural and semi urban branches, checking crop loan files, visiting farms, assessing tractor and dairy loans and recovering dues. This is one of the most common agriculture field officer jobs in the public sector.
  • IBPS SO law officer salary: ₹48,480 basic. Law officers check title deeds and loan documents, draft legal notices and handle recovery cases and court matters for the bank.
  • IBPS SO HR salary: ₹48,480 basic. HR officers handle staff transfers, training, promotions, pay issues and staff welfare.
  • IBPS SO marketing officer salary: ₹48,480 basic. Marketing officers bring in loan, deposit and insurance business and work with branches to meet targets.
  • Rajbhasha Adhikari: ₹48,480 basic. They run official language work, translation and Hindi use across offices.

People also ask about SBI specialist officer salary and RBI specialist officer salary. Those banks run their own SO recruitment with their own grades and posts, so the pay depends on the grade in that advertisement. SBI SO posts are offered in several grades, so read each advertisement for its scale. For the RBI's officer entry, see our RBI Grade B page.

IBPS SO salary in hand and per month

The IBPS SO salary in hand is the gross minus your NPS share, professional tax in some states and income tax. Three things change the monthly figure:

  • City: IT and HR officers are often in metros and get higher HRA or lease. AFOs are often in rural branches with lower HRA but lower expenses.
  • DA: it changes every quarter, so the gross moves during the year.
  • Tax regime and savings: these decide your monthly TDS.

Since DA keeps changing, I do not quote one fixed IBPS SO it officer salary in hand or AFO salary in hand figure. Use the calculator below with your offer letter figures, and read our CTC to in-hand salary guide for the method.

IBPS SO exam pattern

Selection has three stages: an online prelims, an online mains and an interview. Prelims marks only shortlist you. Final merit is built from mains and interview marks, with 80% weight to mains and 20% to the interview. Negative marking of one fourth of the question's marks applies to wrong answers.

In the latest cycle IBPS changed the pattern so that professional knowledge is tested from the prelims itself. The broad structure reported for this cycle is:

StageWhat it coversSize
PrelimsEnglish, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude (banking awareness instead for Law and Rajbhasha), Professional Knowledge100 questions, 125 marks, 80 minutes
MainsEnglish, Reasoning, Quant, Professional Knowledge (heaviest section) and a descriptive English paperObjective plus descriptive, as per notification
InterviewSubject knowledge, banking awareness, communicationConducted by a nodal bank with IBPS

The section wise marks and timing can change between cycles, so treat this table as a guide and match it with the notification of your cycle before you plan.

IBPS SO syllabus and course: how to prepare

Students often ask for an "IBPS SO IT course" or an "IBPS SO course". There is no special course you must join. What you need is your degree subject, revised for exam style questions, plus basic bank exam skills.

  1. Professional knowledge first: IT officers revise DBMS, networking, operating systems, data structures and cyber security. AFOs revise agronomy, soil science, horticulture, animal husbandry, farm credit and government farm schemes. Law officers revise contract, property, banking and recovery laws. HR officers revise labour laws, industrial relations and HR practices.
  2. Bank exam skills: reasoning puzzles, arithmetic and English, at a lighter level than PO.
  3. Banking awareness: RBI functions, priority sector lending, financial inclusion and recent banking news.
  4. Mocks and interview: full mocks every week in the last two months, then practise explaining your subject in simple words for the interview.

Most graduates with a strong subject base need 3 to 5 months. If you are still choosing a course, see agriculture courses for the AFO route and BTech courses for the IT route.

Career growth after IBPS SO

IBPS SO salary after 5 years: with increments alone, basic moves from ₹48,480 to about ₹58,480. Promotion to Middle Management Grade Scale II, which starts at ₹64,820 basic, is open after the required years of service and a promotion process. Specialists can stay in their stream, such as becoming a senior IT manager or chief law officer, or move to general banking roles like branch manager. Clearing JAIIB and CAIIB helps.

Questions students ask

What is the IBPS SO salary?

Every IBPS Specialist Officer starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 a month in the JMGS-I scale, which goes up to ₹85,920. DA, HRA or leased housing, special allowance and other perks are added. The final gross depends on the city and the DA rate.

What is the IBPS agriculture field officer salary?

An Agricultural Field Officer gets the same JMGS-I starting basic of ₹48,480 as other specialist officers. Most AFOs are posted in rural or semi urban branches, so HRA is lower than in a metro, but living costs are lower too.

Is IBPS SO IT officer salary higher than other posts?

No. The basic pay is the same for IT, AFO, Law, HR, Marketing and Rajbhasha officers. IT officers are often posted in big cities, so their HRA and gross pay can be a little higher.

What is the IBPS SO exam pattern?

There is an online prelims, an online mains and an interview. In the latest cycle the prelims had 100 questions for 125 marks in 80 minutes, including professional knowledge. Final merit uses mains and interview marks in an 80:20 ratio.

What is the age limit for IBPS SO?

You must be 20 to 30 years old on the cut-off date in the notification. SC and ST candidates get 5 years relaxation, OBC 3 years and PwBD 10 years.

Is there any course needed for IBPS SO?

No separate course is needed. You need the degree asked for your post, such as a BTech for IT officer, a BSc Agriculture for AFO or an LLB for Law Officer. Then prepare your subject plus reasoning, English and banking awareness.
