The IBPS PO salary starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 per month in the Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I), the officer entry scale used by public sector banks. Add DA, HRA or leased housing, special allowance, medical cover and NPS, and a fresh bank PO earns one of the strongest starting packages open to any graduate. Below I explain the bank PO job, who can apply, the IBPS PO exam pattern and how pay grows with promotions.

What is a bank PO job

A Probationary Officer, or PO, is the entry level officer of a bank. "Probationary" simply means you are on trial and training for the first two years. During this time you rotate through cash, deposits, loans, clearing and customer service in a branch, and you attend training at the bank's staff college. Once confirmed, you work as an Assistant Manager.

What is the job of bank PO on a normal day? Opening the branch with the manager, checking cash and vault balances, approving account openings, processing loan files, visiting borrowers, answering customer issues and guiding clerks. Later you may lead a small branch, handle credit or forex, or move to a regional office. Expect transfers every few years and a rural posting early on.

IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) runs one common exam called CRP PO/MT for many public sector banks. You clear one exam, and IBPS allots you to a bank based on your rank and preference.

IBPS PO salary structure and pay scale

The same officer scale is used across the participating banks, so the IBPS bank PO salary is nearly the same whichever bank you join. Here is the structure:

ComponentHow it works for a new PO
Basic pay₹48,480 at the start of JMGS-I
Yearly increments₹2,000 for the first seven steps, then ₹2,340 and ₹2,680
Top of JMGS-I₹85,920 basic
Dearness AllowancePercentage of basic, revised every quarter
HRA or leased flatHigher in metros, lower in small towns
Special allowancePaid as a share of basic to officers
Other benefitsMedical cover, leave fare concession, NPS and other perks as per bank rules

So what is the IBPS PO starting salary in rupees per month? The basic is fixed at ₹48,480. The gross on top of that depends on DA for that quarter and the city you are posted in. That is why I always tell students to look at the components, not a single number someone posts online.

IBPS PO salary in hand and per month

Your IBPS PO salary in hand is the gross minus NPS contribution, income tax and small deductions. The IBPS PO salary per month in hand moves with:

  • Posting city: metro HRA or lease limit is higher than in a town or village branch.
  • DA: bank DA changes every quarter, so the same officer sees a different gross across the year.
  • Tax regime and savings: these change your monthly TDS.

Bank PO salary in different banks

Students search for Punjab National Bank PO salary, Bank of India PO salary, Indian Bank PO salary or Bank of Maharashtra PO salary as if each is very different. In reality, all public sector banks follow the same industry wide settlement, so the basic pay of a PO is the same. Small differences come from leased housing limits and local perks.

The list of participating banks can change in each notification. For the SBI bank PO salary see our SBI PO page, and for "RBI PO salary" read about RBI Grade B, which is the RBI's direct officer entry. For ECGC probationary officer salary and other non IBPS bodies, read that body's own notification.

Bank PO salary after 5 years and promotions

Bank PO salary after 5 years depends mostly on promotion. Without any promotion, five yearly increments take the JMGS-I basic from ₹48,480 to about ₹58,480. With a promotion to Middle Management Grade Scale II, which many sincere officers clear after a few years of service, you move to a higher scale with more pay and allowances.

The usual ladder is: Scale I (Assistant Manager) to Scale II (Manager) to Scale III (Senior Manager) to Scale IV (Chief Manager) and then Assistant General Manager, Deputy General Manager and General Manager. Top posts like Executive Director come from the general manager level. Clearing the JAIIB and CAIIB banking exams and handling a branch well both help you move up faster.

IBPS PO exam pattern: prelims, mains and interview

The bank PO exam through IBPS has three stages. All objective tests are online and carry negative marking for wrong answers.

StageWhat it testsKey points
IBPS PO preliminary examEnglish, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning100 marks, 1 hour, sectional timing; only for shortlisting
IBPS PO mains examReasoning and Computer Aptitude, English, Data Analysis and Interpretation, General, Economy and Banking AwarenessObjective test plus a descriptive English test
InterviewPersonality, banking awareness, communicationCoordinated by a nodal bank with IBPS

The IBPS PO prelims exam pattern is close to the SBI one but slightly easier in level. The IBPS PO mains exam pattern is where most people fall. It has long reasoning puzzles, tough DI and a large banking awareness section. Final merit combines mains and interview marks in the ratio given in the notification. Prelims marks are not counted in the final list. The IBPS PO exam time for each stage and the section wise marks split are printed in the notification and call letter, and IBPS sometimes changes them, so confirm before you plan.

IBPS PO exam syllabus and preparation

The IBPS PO exam syllabus and the bank PO exam syllabus in general cover:

  • Reasoning: puzzles, seating, syllogisms, coding, inequalities, direction sense, data sufficiency.
  • Quant and DI: arithmetic, number series, approximation, caselets and chart based data interpretation.
  • English: reading comprehension, fillers, error spotting, rearrangement, plus essay and letter writing for mains.
  • Banking and economy: RBI policy terms, banking structure, government schemes, monthly current affairs.
  • Computer aptitude: basics of hardware, software, internet and security.

For IBPS PO exam preparation, I suggest 6 to 9 months of steady study. Spend the first two months on basics, then take one prelims mock every two to three days and analyse every mistake. From the fourth month, add mains level puzzles and DI, plus 20 minutes of banking news daily. Practise typing one essay a week. Students who clear IBPS PO often also sit for SBI PO, IBPS clerk and IBPS RRB exams, so one preparation can open several doors. See the full list on our bank jobs page.

Official website and how to apply

The official website for the notification, online form, call letters and scores is ibps.in. Look for the CRP PO/MT notice when it opens, read the eligibility part fully, keep your documents scanned, and pay the fee only on that site. Bank allotment is done by IBPS after the interview based on merit, preference and vacancies. For other options with a degree, see jobs after graduation and jobs after BCom.
