The SBI PO salary starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 plus 4 advance increments in the Junior Management Grade Scale I (JMGS-I), which puts your starting basic at about ₹56,480 a month. On top of this you get DA, HRA or leased housing, city allowance, medical cover, PF and NPS. The latest State Bank of India notification puts the approximate yearly CTC at the Mumbai centre at close to ₹22 lakh. This page explains the job, the exam, the money and the growth, in plain words.

What is the SBI PO exam and what is the job

A lot of students ask me "what is SBI PO exam" as if it is one test. It is a three phase selection run by State Bank of India itself for the post of Probationary Officer. You join as an Assistant Manager level officer and spend two years on probation, learning every desk of a branch: cash, accounts, loans, deposits, customer service and staff handling. After that you are confirmed as a regular officer in JMGS-I.

The SBI PO job profile is not a desk job with fixed work. In a normal week you may sanction a small loan, check documents for a home loan, sort out a customer complaint, review the cash position, guide clerks and meet targets for deposits and insurance. The bank's notification itself says the role is about leading banking operations, managing teams and delivering financial solutions across the country. Posting can be anywhere in India, including rural branches, and transfers are part of the job.

Yes, SBI PO is a government job in the sense most families mean it. SBI is a public sector bank owned mainly by the Government of India. You get job security, pension under NPS, medical cover and a clear promotion path. It is not a central ministry post, so the 7th CPC pay matrix does not apply. Bank pay follows its own scales.

SBI PO salary: basic pay, allowances and CTC

Here is how the SBI PO salary, or SBI probationary officer salary, is built up as per the latest notification:

Part of payWhat it means
Starting basic pay₹48,480 plus 4 advance increments (about ₹56,480)
Pay scaleJMGS-I: ₹48,480 rising to ₹85,920 in 16 steps
Dearness Allowance (DA)A percentage of basic, revised every quarter in banks
HRA or lease rentalDepends on the city; officers can get leased housing
CCACity compensatory allowance for bigger cities
PF and NPSRetirement savings; bank also contributes
Other perksMedical facility, LFC (leave travel concession) and other perks as per bank rules
Approx. CTCClose to ₹22 lakh a year at Mumbai at the starting pay, as per the notification

Read the scale like this: the basic rises by ₹2,000 a year for seven steps, then by ₹2,340 for two steps, then by ₹2,680 for seven steps. Because you start with 4 advance increments, you skip the first four steps on day one.

SBI PO in-hand salary per month

The SBI PO salary in hand is the money that reaches your account after deductions. Deductions include NPS contribution, income tax, professional tax in some states and small staff welfare cuts. Your SBI PO salary per month in hand changes with three things:

  • City: a metro posting gives higher HRA or lease rental than a small town.
  • DA: bank DA moves every quarter, so the gross changes during the year.
  • Tax choices: your tax regime and savings change the final take home.

So a fresher in a small town and a fresher in Mumbai will see different SBI PO inhand salary figures in the same month, even with the same basic. I avoid quoting one fixed in-hand number because it goes out of date within months. To work out your own figure from a CTC, use the calculator below or our CTC to in-hand salary guide.

For a student from a small town, the honest picture is this: the SBI PO starting salary is among the best for any fresh graduate in a government or public sector job, and the perks like leased housing and medical cover add real value on top of the cash.

SBI PO salary after 5 years, 10 years and 20 years

Students often ask about SBI PO salary after 5 years or after 10 years. Two things push your pay up: yearly increments and promotions.

  • After 5 years: if you stay in JMGS-I, the scale alone takes your basic to roughly ₹65,000 to ₹68,000. Many officers clear the promotion process to Middle Management Grade Scale II (MMGS-II) within a few years, which moves you to a higher scale.
  • After 10 years: officers who keep clearing promotions usually reach MMGS-III or Senior Management Grade Scale IV, where basic, allowances and responsibilities are much higher. Many work as branch managers or in regional offices.
  • After 20 years: a strong performer can reach senior and top executive grades (Scale V, VI, VII and above), with roles like regional manager, deputy general manager and general manager.

The SBI PO highest salary belongs to officers who rise to the top executive grades, which only a small number reach. Banking exams like JAIIB and CAIIB, good performance ratings and willingness to take rural or difficult postings all help.

SBI PO exam pattern: prelims, mains and phase III

The SBI PO exam has three phases. Negative marking is one fourth of the marks of that question for every wrong answer, in both prelims and mains.

Phase I: SBI PO prelims exam

The SBI PO preliminary exam is an online test of 100 marks in 1 hour, with a separate 20 minute timer for each section:

SectionQuestionsTime
English Language4020 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude3020 minutes
Reasoning Ability3020 minutes
Total1001 hour

The SBI probationary officer preliminary exam is only a screening stage. There is no sectional cut-off, and about 10 times the vacancies in each category are called for mains. Prelims marks are not added to the final merit.

Phase II: SBI PO mains exam pattern

TestQuestionsMarksTime
Reasoning and Computer Aptitude406050 minutes
Data Analysis and Interpretation306045 minutes
General, Economy and Banking Awareness606045 minutes
English Language402040 minutes
Descriptive: emails, situation analysis, report or precis33030 minutes

The objective part carries 200 marks in 3 hours and the descriptive test is typed on the computer right after it. Sectional cut-offs apply in mains. The pattern can be changed by the bank, so always match it with the current notification.

Phase III: psychometric test, group exercise and interview

Phase III has a psychometric test, a group exercise of 20 marks and an interview of 30 marks. Final merit uses mains marks scaled to 75 and phase III marks scaled to 25, out of 100. You must qualify in both phases separately.

SBI PO exam syllabus in brief

  • Reasoning: puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, blood relations, coding, input output, data sufficiency.
  • Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation: simplification, number series, quadratic equations, percentages, profit and loss, time and work, and tables, bar and pie chart based DI sets.
  • English: reading comprehension, error spotting, fillers, para jumbles, cloze test, vocabulary.
  • General, Economy and Banking Awareness: current affairs, RBI and banking terms, budget, government schemes, financial news.
  • Computer Aptitude: basics of hardware, software, internet, networking and MS Office.
  • Descriptive: formal emails, short reports and situation based answers.

Is SBI PO exam tough? Yes, it is among the harder bank exams, mainly because mains has long puzzles and heavy DI under strict time. But the syllabus is fixed and every part can be learned with practice.

SBI PO exam form, fees and timing

The SBI PO exam form is filled online only, on the SBI careers page. You upload photo, signature, thumb impression and a handwritten declaration. The SBI PO exam fees in the latest notification are ₹750 for General, EWS and OBC, and nil for SC, ST and PwBD. The fee is not refundable.

The SBI PO exam time for prelims is 1 hour and for mains about 3 hours 30 minutes including the descriptive test. Shift timings, dates and centres change every cycle and are printed on the call letter, so check the official website for them. Selected candidates sign a service bond of ₹2 lakh to serve the bank for at least 3 years and finish an online basic banking course before joining.

SBI PO exam preparation: a practical plan

Most of the students I have seen clear SBI PO prepared seriously for 6 to 12 months, often alongside the IBPS PO exam because the syllabus overlaps. A plan that works:

  1. Months 1 to 2: build basics in maths and reasoning, read one newspaper daily for English and awareness.
  2. Months 3 to 4: start timed sectional tests and full prelims mocks twice a week.
  3. Months 5 onwards: shift to mains level puzzles, DI and banking awareness, and type one email or report every few days.
  4. Last month: full mocks, error analysis and revision of current affairs.

Keep a backup. The same preparation fits SBI clerk, IBPS RRB and RBI Assistant. See all options on our bank jobs page and other jobs after graduation.

SBI PO vs IBPS PO salary and official website

On SBI PO vs IBPS PO salary: both use the same JMGS-I scale. The difference is that SBI gives 4 advance increments at joining, so the SBI PO basic salary starts higher, and SBI is the largest bank with more chances of foreign postings. IBPS PO gives you a choice of several public sector banks. Read our IBPS PO salary page to compare.

The only official website for the notification, the online form and call letters is the SBI careers page at sbi.bank.in (careers, current openings). Queries are handled through the bank's notification helpline. Ignore social media messages promising seats or leaked papers.

Questions students ask

What is the SBI PO starting salary?

SBI PO starting basic pay is ₹48,480 plus 4 advance increments, which comes to about ₹56,480 a month in the JMGS-I scale. DA, HRA or lease rental, CCA and other allowances are paid on top. The latest notification gives an approximate CTC close to ₹22 lakh a year at Mumbai.

What is the SBI PO salary in hand per month?

It depends on your city, the current DA and your tax deductions, so there is no single figure. A metro posting pays more because of higher HRA or lease rental. Use a CTC to in-hand calculator with your offer letter figures for an exact estimate.

What is the SBI PO exam pattern?

There are three phases: an online prelims of 100 marks in 1 hour, an online mains with 200 objective marks and a descriptive test, and phase III with a psychometric test, group exercise and interview. Final merit uses mains and phase III in a 75:25 ratio.

What is the age limit and eligibility for SBI PO?

You need a graduation degree in any discipline and must be 21 to 30 years old on the cut-off date. OBC candidates get 3 years relaxation, SC and ST get 5 years and PwBD candidates get 10 to 15 years.

What are the SBI PO exam fees?

In the latest notification the fee is ₹750 for General, EWS and OBC candidates. SC, ST and PwBD candidates pay no fee. The fee is not refunded, so check eligibility before paying.

SBI is a public sector bank owned mainly by the Government of India, so SBI PO is treated as a sarkari job in terms of security and benefits. Pay follows bank scales, not the 7th CPC pay matrix used in central ministries.

How many attempts are allowed in SBI PO?

As per the latest notification, UR and EWS candidates get 6 chances, OBC and PwBD (UR, EWS, OBC) candidates get 9, and SC and ST candidates have no limit. Only appearing in the main exam counts as a chance.
