If you are in the third year of BTech or BSc, you have probably heard seniors talk about GATE. Before you start, understand the GATE exam syllabus, who can write it and what the score actually gets you. GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. It is a national computer based exam whose score is used for MTech, ME and PhD admission with a scholarship, and by many public sector undertakings (PSUs) to hire engineers. This guide covers eligibility, pattern, total marks, the 30 papers, fees, PSU jobs through GATE and a preparation plan.
What is GATE exam: full form, meaning and purpose
The GATE exam full form is Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering. If you are asking "GATE exam kya hai" or "GATE exam kya hota hai", think of it as a test of how well you understand your undergraduate subjects. It is a national level GATE entrance exam for postgraduate study, and despite the name, it is not only for engineers. Papers are now offered in science, architecture, humanities and more.
The purpose of GATE exam is threefold:
- Higher studies: admission to master's and doctoral programmes in IITs, IISc, NITs and other government supported institutes, with possible financial assistance from the Ministry of Education.
- PSU jobs: several PSUs shortlist engineer and executive trainees using GATE marks.
- Other uses: some research labs and other organisations also consider GATE scores.
The official brochure itself says that qualifying GATE does not promise admission, scholarship or a job. It is a strong first step, not the finish line.
Who conducts GATE
GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (GATE), Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education. One of these institutes acts as the organising institute each cycle, and the official website moves to that institute's domain each cycle. The organising institute releases the information brochure, opens registration, conducts the exam and publishes scores.
GATE exam eligibility: who can give GATE exam
GATE has no minimum percentage. You only need to be in the right year of an eligible degree, or have completed it. Here is the eligibility criteria from the latest brochure:
| Qualifying degree | When you can write GATE |
|---|---|
| BE, BTech, BPharm, BArch | 3rd year or higher, or completed |
| BSc, BA, BCom, BCA (3 year) | 3rd year, or completed |
| BSc Research or BS (4 year) | 3rd year or higher, or completed |
| BSc Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry (4 year) | 3rd or 4th year, or completed |
| Integrated MSc, Integrated BS-MS | 3rd year or higher, or completed |
| MSc, MA, MCA or equivalent | 1st year or higher, or completed |
| MBBS, BDS, BVSc and similar | 5th semester or higher, or completed |
- Can BSc students give GATE exam? Yes, from the third year. They usually pick papers like Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Life Sciences or Data Science and AI.
- GATE exam age limit: there is no age limit to appear, so working engineers can write it too.
- GATE exam eligibility percentage: none for the exam itself. But PSUs and colleges set their own marks rules (often 60% to 65% in the degree for PSU jobs), so check each notice.
GATE exam pattern, total marks and online test
| Point | Details |
|---|---|
| Mode | Computer based GATE exam online test, in English |
| Time | 3 hours per paper |
| GATE exam total marks | 100 per paper |
| Number of questions | 65: 10 General Aptitude plus 55 subject questions |
| General Aptitude | 15 marks, common to all papers |
| Subject part | 85 marks from your chosen paper |
| Question types | MCQ, MSQ (more than one correct option) and NAT (type a number) |
| Negative marking | Only for MCQs: minus 1/3 for a 1 mark question, minus 2/3 for a 2 mark question |
MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marks, but MSQ gives no partial credit. You can write one paper or two papers from the allowed two-paper combinations. The exam has an on-screen virtual calculator, and the official site offers a mock test so you can practise the GATE exam interface before the real day.
Your result shows marks out of 100 and a scaled GATE score. Qualifying marks are fixed separately for each paper. OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates need 9/10 of the general qualifying marks, and SC, ST and PwD candidates need 2/3. The score stays valid for three years from the result.
GATE exam syllabus: papers and subjects
The GATE exam syllabus has two parts: General Aptitude (common to everyone) and the subject syllabus of the paper you choose. General Aptitude covers verbal ability, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and spatial aptitude at a basic level. The subject syllabus follows your undergraduate course closely.
The latest cycle offers 30 papers, including a new Robotics and Automation paper, and the syllabi were revised. Always download the syllabus PDF of your paper from the official site.
| Group | GATE exam subjects (papers) |
|---|---|
| Core engineering | Civil (CE), Mechanical (ME), Electrical (EE), Electronics and Communication (EC), Computer Science and IT (CS), Chemical (CH), Instrumentation (IN), Production and Industrial (PI) |
| Other engineering | Aerospace, Agricultural, Biomedical, Environmental, Geomatics, Metallurgical, Mining, Naval Architecture, Petroleum, Robotics and Automation, Data Science and AI (DA) |
| Science | Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Biotechnology, Geology and Geophysics, Ecology and Evolution |
| Combined papers | Engineering Sciences (XE), Life Sciences (XL), Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) |
| Design | Architecture and Planning (AR) |
Combined papers have a common section plus optional sections. In XE, Engineering Mathematics is compulsory and you choose two optional sections. In XL, Chemistry is compulsory with two optional sections. In XH, Reasoning and Comprehension is compulsory with one optional section such as Economics, English, Psychology or Sociology. So yes, BA and BCom graduates have a paper too.
For core engineering papers, engineering mathematics forms part of the subject section, and the rest is your branch subjects. For example, the Civil paper covers structures, geotechnical, water resources, environmental and transportation engineering, and the CS paper covers algorithms, data structures, operating systems, databases, networks, theory of computation and more.
GATE exam for government jobs: how PSUs use GATE scores
This is the biggest benefit of GATE exam for many students. Several PSUs do not hold their own written test for graduate engineers. They shortlist candidates using GATE marks of a specific year, then call them for further rounds such as group discussion or interview, as stated in each notice.
Two examples from recent official notices:
- POWERGRID Engineer Trainee: Electrical, Civil, Computer Science and Electronics through the matching GATE paper (EE, CE, CS, EC). BE or BTech with at least 60%, upper age 28 years with category relaxation. Pay during one year of training is in the ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000 IDA scale, and after training the E2 scale of ₹50,000 to ₹1,60,000.
- GAIL Executive Trainee: Chemical, Instrumentation, Electrical and Mechanical through the matching GATE paper. BE or BTech with at least 65% (5% relaxation for SC, ST and PwBD), upper age 26 years with category relaxation.
Points to remember:
- PSUs usually accept only the GATE score of the year named in their notice, not an older one.
- Each PSU picks its own disciplines, marks rule and age limit. Read every notice on the PSU's own website.
- PSU pay is on IDA scales, not the 7th CPC pay matrix. Read more in my guide on PSU jobs and engineer salary.
Other government routes for engineers include UPSC Engineering Services, SSC JE, RRB JE and ISRO and DRDO scientist posts. The technical syllabus of these overlaps a lot with GATE.
GATE exam fees and application form
You apply online on the organising institute's GATE website. In the latest cycle, registration needed a DigiLocker account and live photo capture. The fee in the regular period was ₹1,000 per paper for female, SC, ST and PwD candidates and ₹2,000 per paper for all other candidates, with a higher fee in the extended period. OBC and EWS candidates pay the same fee as general candidates. Fees and steps can change, so read the brochure before applying. Submit only one application; to add a second paper, add it to the same application.
How to prepare for GATE exam: a 10 month plan
- Months 1 to 4, concepts: go subject by subject from your paper's official syllabus. Use your standard college textbooks and make short notes and a formula sheet.
- Months 5 to 7, practice: solve previous year GATE papers subject wise (available on the official site). Give one subject test every week. Revise General Aptitude and engineering maths, because they are scoring.
- Months 8 to 10, full tests: attempt full 3 hour online tests, at first weekly and then twice a week. Practise with the virtual calculator.
Do you need a paid GATE course? Not necessarily. Many students clear it with textbooks, official previous papers and a test series; a course helps mainly with discipline and doubt clearing. GATE exam preparation tips I give every student: start in the third year so you write GATE in the final year with fresh concepts; attempt NAT and MSQ questions with care since there is no guessing benefit; and keep a list of every mistake. Most serious students need 8 to 12 months alongside college.
Is GATE exam tough, and official website
GATE is tough because it tests depth: one concept may be checked in a tricky numerical way. It is one of the toughest exams in India, especially in popular papers like CS, ME, EE, EC and CE where competition is high. But it rewards steady study more than talent. Many toppers come from colleges that are not famous.
GATE is conducted once a year, over several days in forenoon and afternoon sessions. Each cycle's organising IIT runs its own GATE website, and the brochure, syllabus, previous papers, mock test and results are published there. Do not trust dates or fees from anywhere else. If you are still choosing a branch, see BTech courses and jobs after BSc. For MBA after engineering, read about the CAT exam.
