Air traffic controller salary in India is among the best for a science graduate who joins through one written exam and no interview. Almost every civil air traffic controller in the country works for the Airports Authority of India (AAI), a central government enterprise, and joins as Junior Executive (Air Traffic Control). The starting basic pay is ₹40,000 a month in the ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000 scale, and allowances, perks and a performance bonus come on top. Below I explain the work, the AAI ATC exam, the training and how pay grows over a career.

What an air traffic controller does all day

An air traffic controller, or ATCO, keeps aircraft safely apart on the ground and in the sky. Pilots fly the plane, but they follow the controller's instructions on when to taxi, take off, climb, turn, descend and land. A controller watches radar screens, talks to many pilots on the radio at once, and plans a few minutes ahead so that two aircraft never come too close.

There are three broad kinds of control work:

  • Aerodrome or tower control: runways, taxiways and aircraft close to the airport, often from the glass cabin of the control tower.
  • Approach control: aircraft climbing out of or coming into busy airports, usually within a radius of a few dozen miles.
  • Area control: aircraft cruising at high levels between cities, handled from large control centres with radar.

Airports and airspace work round the clock, so controllers work in rotating shifts, including nights, Sundays and festivals. The job needs calm nerves. One wrong call can cause a serious incident, and controllers know that.

Air traffic controller salary in India: AAI ATC salary at each grade

AAI follows the industrial dearness allowance (IDA) pay scales used by central public sector enterprises, not the 7th CPC pay matrix. The table shows the scales for the first few grades that an ATC officer moves through. These are basic pay ranges per month.

GradePost (ATC cadre)Basic pay scale per month
E-1Junior Executive (ATC)₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000
E-2Assistant Manager (ATC)₹50,000 to ₹1,60,000
E-3Manager (ATC)₹60,000 to ₹1,80,000
E-4Senior Manager (ATC)₹70,000 to ₹2,00,000

On top of basic pay, an ATC job salary includes:

  • Dearness allowance (IDA): revised every quarter, so I do not quote a fixed figure here.
  • Perks and allowances: a set share of basic pay that the employee can use under a menu of allowances.
  • HRA or company housing, depending on the posting.
  • Performance related pay, medical cover, leave encashment and retirement benefits.

Recent AAI notifications have printed an approximate cost to company for a new Junior Executive in the range of about ₹12 to 14 lakh a year. Read the figure in the latest notice on aai.aero, because it moves with DA. The air traffic controller salary per month that lands in your account is lower than CTC, after income tax, pension contribution and other deductions. Use the calculator below to turn a CTC figure into a rough in-hand amount.

What about AAI ATC salary after 5 years? Promotions in AAI depend on vacancies and rules for minimum service in a grade, so timing varies. Most controllers reach at least the next grade within a few years, and with DA growth and yearly increments the total yearly package usually climbs well above the starting CTC. Senior controllers who reach General Manager level earn in the top central PSU scales.

How to become an air traffic controller after 12th

There is no direct entry after class 12. You need a science degree first. Here is the usual route:

StepWhat you doTime
1Take Physics and Maths in class 11 and 12 (PCM)2 years
2Do a 3 year BSc with Physics and Mathematics, or a BE or BTech in any branch with Physics and Maths in the course3 to 4 years
3Apply when AAI releases the Junior Executive (ATC) notification and clear the online examPrepare 4 to 8 months
4Clear document check, voice test, psychological assessment, medical and background verificationA few months
5Complete AAI's ATC training and on-the-job rating at a unitUsually more than a year

See BTech courses and BSc courses if you are still choosing your degree. Both paths are accepted, as long as Physics and Maths are part of it.

AAI ATC exam: eligibility and selection

The AAI ATC exam is AAI's own recruitment test, held whenever AAI announces vacancies. It is not a yearly fixed exam, so keep checking the careers section of aai.aero.

  • Qualification: full-time regular BSc (3 years) with Physics and Mathematics, or a full-time regular engineering degree in any discipline with Physics and Maths in any one semester. Marks rules are given in the notice.
  • English: good spoken and written English is required. The notice asks that English was a subject in class 10 or 12.
  • Age limit: recent notices set an upper limit of 27 years for general candidates, with relaxation for reserved categories as per government rules. Use the age limit guide to understand how relaxation works.
  • Selection: online exam, then application verification, voice test, test for psychoactive substances, psychological assessment, medical examination and background check.

The voice test matters more than students expect. Controllers speak in short, clear, standard phrases over the radio, and the test checks clarity and pronunciation.

AAI ATC exam pattern and ATC exam syllabus

The air traffic controller exam is a single computer-based paper of objective questions. In recent cycles it has had two parts:

PartTopicsWhat to expect
General sectionEnglish language, general intelligence and reasoning, general aptitude or numerical ability, general knowledge and awarenessSimilar level to SSC and bank exams
Subject sectionPhysics and Mathematics at graduation levelHas carried the larger share of marks in recent notices

The marks split, number of questions and any negative marking are printed in each notification, so confirm them there. For preparation, students who did BTech usually need to revise BSc-level Physics, while BSc students often need more reasoning practice. If you are also taking other exams, the general section overlaps with SSC CGL.

Air traffic controller course: do you need one?

Students often search for an air traffic controller course or ATC course and find private institutes offering diplomas in aviation or airport management. Be careful here. Those diplomas do not make you an air traffic controller in India. The real ATC course is the training AAI gives after you are selected, at its training centres and then on the job at an airport or control centre. AAI pays you during this training.

So air traffic controller course fees, in the sense most people mean, are not needed. Spend your money on a good science degree and on exam preparation books instead. Training covers air law, meteorology, navigation, radar procedures and many hours of simulator practice, followed by a rating check before you control live traffic on your own.

Skills that make a good controller

  • Fast mental maths and a strong sense of space and direction.
  • Clear speech in English and the habit of listening carefully.
  • Calm under pressure and the ability to switch attention between many aircraft.
  • Good memory for procedures and rules.
  • Fitness, good eyesight (as per medical standards) and good hearing.

Where ATC jobs are and how the air traffic controller career grows

Civil air traffic controller jobs in India sit almost entirely with AAI. You can be posted to a big metro airport, a smaller city airport or an area control centre, and transfers are part of the job. The Indian Air Force and Navy also run air traffic control at their bases, but those posts go to commissioned officers who join through defence routes such as AFCAT.

AAI ATC career growth runs from Junior Executive up through Assistant Manager, Manager, Senior Manager, Assistant General Manager and higher. Senior controllers move into supervision, training, airspace planning and safety roles. A few experienced controllers later work abroad, but foreign jobs need that country's licence rules.

If you love aviation but want to fly, compare this with a commercial pilot career, which costs far more to train for. If you like airport work with passengers, read about cabin crew.

Pros and cons of an ATC career

ProsCons
Central PSU job with strong job securityRotating shifts, night duty and work on holidays
Good pay from day one, with paid trainingHigh stress during peak traffic
No interview: selection is exam plus testsStrict medical and periodic checks throughout the career
Respected technical work with clear promotion gradesTransfers to any AAI station in India

How to start today

  1. If you are in class 10, choose PCM in class 11. Not sure about science? Try the career counselling test.
  2. In college, keep Physics and Maths strong, and practise spoken English every week.
  3. From your final year, solve reasoning, aptitude and general awareness questions daily.
  4. Track AAI's careers page and read the full notice before applying.
  5. Keep a back-up plan, such as other PSU jobs or jobs after BSc, because AAI vacancies do not come out on a fixed schedule.

Questions students ask

What is the air traffic controller salary per month for a fresher?

A new Junior Executive (ATC) at AAI starts on a basic pay of ₹40,000 a month in the ₹40,000 to ₹1,40,000 scale. DA, perks, HRA and performance pay are added, so the monthly gross is well above basic. The exact in-hand figure depends on DA, city and deductions.

Who conducts the ATC exam in India?

The Airports Authority of India conducts its own online exam for Junior Executive (Air Traffic Control). It is held only when AAI announces vacancies, so check the careers section of aai.aero for the latest notification.

Can I become an air traffic controller after 12th?

Not directly. You first need a BSc with Physics and Maths or an engineering degree with Physics and Maths in the course. Take PCM in class 11 and 12 to keep this route open.

What is the AAI ATC exam pattern?

It is one computer-based objective paper. Recent notices have had a general section (English, reasoning, aptitude, general knowledge) and a larger section on Physics and Maths. Check the latest notice for marks and negative marking.

Is a private air traffic controller course useful?

Private aviation diplomas do not qualify you as a controller. AAI trains selected candidates itself, with pay. Your money is better spent on a solid science degree and exam preparation.

What is the age limit for AAI ATC jobs?

Recent notifications set the upper age limit at 27 years for general candidates, with relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and other categories as per government rules. Always confirm the cut-off date in the current notice.
