Station master salary in Indian Railways starts at a basic pay of ₹35,400 per month at Level 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix. On top of basic you get DA, HRA or railway quarters, transport allowance and night duty allowance. The station master is the person who runs a railway station: he or she decides when a train can enter, leave or pass, and is answerable for the safety of every movement. I have seen many graduates from small towns take this post, and most of them say the responsibility is heavy but the respect and security are worth it.

What does a station master do
Here is a simple station master job description. At most stations the station master:
- Gives and takes "line clear" with the next stations so that two trains never enter the same section.
- Sets routes and signals from the panel or cabin and records every train movement.
- Talks to the section controller, who plans train running for the whole division.
- Handles emergencies such as signal failure, a train stopped mid section, or an accident.
- Supervises pointsmen and other station staff, and at small stations also looks after tickets and parcels.
The station master job profile is an operating job in the Traffic department. It is a shift job. You will work mornings, evenings and nights in rotation, including on festivals, because trains run every day. Your first postings are often at small roadside stations.
Who conducts the station master exam
There is no separate station master exam. The post is filled through the graduate level RRB NTPC exam conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). You fill one form, choose one RRB, and give your preference for posts such as Station Master, Goods Train Manager and clerk posts. The same exam is used for all of them, but Station Master also needs a special aptitude test (CBAT).
A related post, Section Controller, has its own separate notice from the RRBs. We cover it further down this page.
Station master eligibility and age limit
| Condition | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Qualification | Graduation in any subject from a recognised university |
| Age limit | 18 to 33 years in the latest notice (check each notice for one-time relaxations) |
| OBC (non creamy layer) | 3 years extra |
| SC and ST | 5 years extra |
| Medical | High vision and fitness standard; the exact medical category is listed in the notice |
| Nationality | Indian citizen, plus other groups listed in the notification |
The medical test is strict for this post because you read signals and make safety decisions. Students with weak eyesight should read the medical standard section and the vision certificate format in the notification before applying. PwBD candidates are generally not taken for safety posts like this one. Work out your age as on the notice date here:
Station master salary per month and pay level
Railway station master salary is fixed at Level 6, and the RRB station master salary is the same in every zone because it follows one central pay matrix. Here is how your basic pay grows with the annual increment if you stay at the same level:
| Stage of service | Basic pay (Level 6) |
|---|---|
| Joining | ₹35,400 |
| After 1 year | ₹36,500 |
| After 3 years | ₹38,700 |
| After 5 years | ₹41,100 |
| After 10 years | ₹47,600 |
These are basic pay figures only. The salary of station master in railway grows faster if you get a promotion or an MACP upgrade to the next level. Station master salary in hand is basic plus allowances minus deductions. The automatic estimate box at the top of this page shows a current figure using the latest DA. The parts are:
- Dearness allowance: a share of basic that the government changes twice a year.
- HRA: paid by city class X, Y or Z of your posting. If you take railway quarters, which many station masters do, HRA is not paid.
- Transport allowance: a fixed amount by level and city.
- Night duty allowance: for hours worked at night, as per railway rules.
- Deductions: your NPS pension share, group insurance and income tax if due.
You can try your own numbers in this calculator:
Railway employees also get free passes for family travel, concession tickets, and treatment in railway hospitals. These add real value that the salary slip does not show.
Selection process for the station master post
- CBT 1: 100 questions in 90 minutes on general awareness, mathematics and reasoning.
- CBT 2: 120 questions in 90 minutes on the same three subjects, at a higher level.
- CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test): a set of tests on memory, concentration, perception and quick decisions. You must reach the minimum score in each test, and there is no relaxation for any category.
- Document verification and medical examination.
There is a one third mark penalty for each wrong answer in the CBTs. For Station Master, the final merit combines CBT 2 marks and CBAT marks in the ratio given in the notification. A good CBT 2 score alone is not enough; many candidates lose the seat at the CBAT stage because they never practised it.
RRB section controller salary, job profile and exam pattern
Section Controller is a separate post that RRBs now recruit through their own notice. The section controller sits in the divisional control office and watches every train on a stretch of line on a live chart or screen. He or she tells station masters which train to send first, plans crossings and handles delays. Think of it as air traffic control for trains. The railway section controller salary starts at the same Level 6 basic as a station master, but many people see control duty as a step up in responsibility.
| Detail | Section Controller | Station Master |
|---|---|---|
| Pay level | Level 6 | Level 6 |
| Starting basic | ₹35,400 | ₹35,400 |
| Qualification | Graduation | Graduation |
| Age limit | 20 to 33 years in the latest notice | 18 to 33 years in the latest notice |
| Work place | Divisional control office | Railway station |
| Recruited through | Separate RRB notice | RRB NTPC (graduate) |
The RRB section controller exam pattern has one computer based test on general awareness, maths, reasoning and related topics, followed by CBAT, documents and medical. The section split and timing are given in the notification, so check the official notice before you plan your study.
Training and promotions
After selection you go to a zonal railway training institute for operating training. You learn the General and Subsidiary Rules, signalling, block working, panel operation and how to handle accidents. You must pass the training tests before you are given independent charge of a station.
Promotions come through seniority and departmental selections in the Traffic department. A station master can rise to Station Superintendent and can also move into control as a Traffic Inspector or Controller. Some clear departmental exams for officer posts later. If promotion is slow, the MACP scheme gives a pay upgrade after 10, 20 and 30 years.
How to prepare for the station master job
- Follow the NTPC graduate syllabus: maths, reasoning and general awareness. Most students need 6 to 12 months.
- Give general awareness daily time. It is the biggest section in both CBTs.
- Practise CBAT style tests once you clear CBT 1. Memory and attention tests feel strange the first time.
- Get your eyes checked early so you know the medical result will not surprise you.
- Prepare for SSC CGL alongside, as the syllabus overlaps. Our list of jobs after graduation has more options.
