The India Post GDS salary is not paid on the normal pay matrix. A Gramin Dak Sevak gets TRCA (Time Related Continuity Allowance) plus dearness allowance. As per the latest notification, a Branch Postmaster (BPM) starts in the TRCA range of ₹12,000 to ₹29,380, and an Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) or Dak Sevak starts in the range of ₹10,000 to ₹24,470. Selection is on a merit list of class 10 marks, with no written exam. This is one of the most searched post office jobs in India, so let us go through the pay, the work and the rules one by one.
I have seen many village students take this post, work near home, and then use the time to prepare for bigger exams. It is a good start if you understand what it is and what it is not.
What is a Gramin Dak Sevak post office job
GDS posts are filled by the Department of Posts (India Post) through online engagement on its GDS portal. Notices come out circle-wise, which means each state postal circle lists its own vacancies, division by division. There are three posts:
- Branch Postmaster (BPM): runs a Branch Post Office in a village. Handles day-to-day post office work, India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) work, and marketing of postal schemes. In a single-handed office the BPM is responsible for everything, including carrying and delivering mail.
- Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM): sells stamps and stationery, carries mail and delivers it door to door, handles IPPB deposits and payments, and helps the BPM.
- Dak Sevak: works in a sub post office, head office, sorting, mail, transit or delivery office. Handles letters, bags and parcels and other work given by the office.
One thing you must know before you apply: the notification says clearly that GDS are not regular central government employees. Work is 4 to 5 hours a day, and the notice asks candidates to have another means of livelihood. Service can continue up to 65 years of age.
India Post GDS salary per month: TRCA slabs for BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak
When people ask about the gramin dak sevak salary, they mean TRCA plus DA. TRCA is fixed by the number of working hours, in two levels: Level 1 for 4 hours of work and Level 2 for 5 hours. The cabinet decision that set up this system gave these starting TRCA figures:
| Post | 4 hours (Level 1) | 5 hours (Level 2) | Range shown in the latest notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Branch Postmaster (BPM) | ₹12,000 | ₹14,500 | ₹12,000 to ₹29,380 |
| Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) | ₹10,000 | ₹12,000 | ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 |
| Dak Sevak | ₹10,000 | ₹12,000 | ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 |
So the BPM in post office salary starts at ₹12,000 TRCA, and the ABPM salary in post office starts at ₹10,000 TRCA, before DA. Your actual post office GDS salary per month is TRCA plus dearness allowance. DA for GDS is revised whenever it is revised for central government employees, so the total keeps changing. Check the current DA order on the India Post website for the latest figure.
On top of TRCA and DA, GDS can get some fixed allowances, depending on the post and the office: office maintenance allowance (for BPMs who provide the office room), combined duty allowance, cash conveyance charges, cycle maintenance allowance, boat allowance in some areas, and a risk and hardship allowance for difficult areas. There is also an ex-gratia bonus. The notice also mentions the GDS Gratuity and the Service Discharge Benefit Scheme.
GDS salary after 5 years, 10 years and 20 years
TRCA goes up by 3% every year, subject to conditions, and the GDS can choose whether the increment falls in January or July. There is no fixed promotion in the GDS cadre itself, so the growth comes from this increment and DA. A rough idea, on TRCA only (DA is extra):
| Years of service | ABPM or Dak Sevak (from ₹10,000) | BPM (from ₹12,000) |
|---|---|---|
| Start | ₹10,000 | ₹12,000 |
| After 3 years | about ₹10,900 | about ₹13,100 |
| After 5 years | about ₹11,600 | about ₹13,900 |
| After 10 years | about ₹13,400 | about ₹16,100 |
| After 20 years | about ₹18,100 | about ₹21,700 |
These are simple 3% steps on the Level 1 starting figure, rounded. Actual figures depend on rounding rules, your slab and any revision by the Department. TRCA cannot go above the top of your slab. The real jump in salary comes when a GDS moves to a regular departmental post, which we cover below.
Eligibility and age limit for India Post GDS
| Condition | What the notification says |
|---|---|
| Education | Class 10 pass from a recognised Indian board, with pass marks in Mathematics and English |
| Local language | Must have studied the local language of the circle up to class 10 |
| Other skills | Computer knowledge and ability to ride a bicycle |
| Livelihood | Must have adequate means of livelihood |
| Age | 18 to 40 years, counted on the last date of application |
| Age relaxation | SC and ST 5 years, OBC 3 years, PwBD 10 years, PwBD plus OBC 13 years, PwBD plus SC or ST 15 years; no relaxation for EWS |
| Fee | ₹100; no fee for women, SC, ST, PwBD and transwomen candidates |
| Residence | BPM must live in the post village and give a room for the office; ABPM and Dak Sevak must live within the delivery area |
This answers the common question on post office job qualification and post office job requirements. Many graduates also apply, but higher degrees get no extra weight. Only your class 10 marks count. Check your age with relaxation here:
Selection process: how the merit list works
There is no GDS exam. Selection works like this:
- Online registration and application on the GDS portal, with a choice of division and posts.
- System generated merit list from class 10 marks, worked out as a percentage up to four decimal places. If your marksheet shows grades or CGPA, the system converts them by multiplying the grade point by 9.5.
- Tie break: if two candidates have the same percentage, the older one is placed higher, and then a set category and gender order is used.
- Document verification within the time given in the shortlist, with original marksheet, caste or EWS certificate if any, date of birth proof and a medical certificate from a government doctor.
- Pre-engagement steps and basic training of a few days before you join.
Be very careful when you fill the form. Even a small mismatch between the form and your marksheet can lead to rejection. In my experience, wrong marks entry is the most common reason good candidates lose a GDS seat.
Postman salary and promotion from GDS
People often mix up GDS post office salary with the regular post office salary of a Postman. Many students search for postman careers along with GDS. They are different jobs. A Postman is a regular departmental employee on the 7th CPC pay matrix. Postman and Mail Guard posts are at Level 3, where basic pay starts at ₹21,700, plus DA, HRA and transport allowance. So the postman salary per month is clearly higher than GDS pay, and comes with the benefits of a regular central post. A Multi Tasking Staff post in the Department is at Level 1 (basic ₹18,000).
Part of the Postman and MTS posts in the Department are filled from GDS through departmental exams, as per the recruitment rules. The Department also runs other departmental exams for higher posts. Eligibility, years of service needed and the syllabus are given in the Department's notice for each such exam, so read that notice and do not rely on hearsay. If you want a regular central post through an open exam instead, look at SSC MTS and SSC CHSL.
What the work is like day to day
A BPM opens the branch office for the fixed hours, books articles, handles savings scheme deposits and withdrawals, does IPPB transactions, and keeps accounts. An ABPM spends much of the day on delivery: letters, parcels, money and bank services at people's doors. A Dak Sevak works inside a bigger post office with sorting and dispatch. The work is steady but rural. Postings are mostly in villages, which suits candidates who want to stay close to family. Many women apply because the post can be near home. See govt jobs for women.
How to apply and prepare
- Watch the official portal: India Post releases GDS schedules a few times in some years. Read the full notification for your circle.
- Keep documents ready: class 10 marksheet, caste or EWS certificate in the right format, date of birth proof, photo and signature in the size given.
- Learn basic computer work and cycling before you join. You will sign a declaration about both.
- Pick divisions wisely: cut-offs differ a lot from one division to another. A division with fewer applicants may give you a better chance, but you must be ready to live there.
- Prepare for other exams too: GDS is merit based, so you cannot improve your score after class 10. Keep an exam route open, such as SSC GD Constable or Railway Group D.
For the full list of options after class 10, read govt jobs after 10th and govt jobs without exam. A real GDS selection never needs money or an agent. If anyone asks for payment, report it.
Questions students ask
What is the GDS salary in post office per month?
A Gramin Dak Sevak gets TRCA plus dearness allowance. The starting TRCA is ₹12,000 for a BPM and ₹10,000 for an ABPM or Dak Sevak for 4 hours of work, and higher for 5 hours. DA is added on top and changes with central government DA orders.
What is the BPM salary in post office compared with ABPM salary?
BPM has a higher slab: ₹12,000 to ₹29,380 TRCA in the latest notice. ABPM and Dak Sevak are in the ₹10,000 to ₹24,470 slab. A BPM can also get office maintenance allowance because the office runs in a room the BPM provides.
Is Indian Post GDS salary the same in every state?
Yes, the TRCA slabs are set by the Department of Posts for the whole country, and DA is the same rate. What differs is the post, the working hours of the branch office and the fixed allowances that apply to that office.
Is GDS a permanent government job?
GDS is a government engagement under the Department of Posts with service up to 65 years, but the notification states that GDS are not regular central government employees. They are not on the pay matrix and work 4 to 5 hours a day. Regular posts like Postman and MTS can be reached through departmental exams.
Is there any exam for India Post GDS?
No. Selection is on a system generated merit list made from class 10 marks. Shortlisted candidates then go through document verification and a medical certificate check.
What is the postman salary in India?
A Postman is a regular post at Level 3 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with starting basic pay of ₹21,700. DA, house rent allowance and transport allowance are added to this, so the gross pay is well above the basic.
