There are hundreds of courses after 12th, but most students end up choosing from about forty of them. Over the years I have watched students pick a course in a hurry during admission season and regret it by the second year. This guide groups every major course by stream and type, with the duration, who can apply, the entrance test and the jobs it leads to. Each course name links to a detailed page.
Types of courses after 12th: degree, diploma or certificate
All after 12th courses fall into five types. First decide which type suits you. This one choice decides how long you study, how much you spend and how soon you can earn.
| Type | Usual length | Good for | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional degree | 4 to 5.5 years | Regulated careers with a licence or registration | MBBS, BTech, BArch, BA LLB |
| General degree | 3 years (4 with honours) | Government exams, higher study, teaching | BA, BSc, BCom |
| Professional course | 3 to 5 years, studied in stages | Finance and company law | CA, CS, CMA |
| Diploma | 1 to 3 years | Faster entry into technical and health jobs | Polytechnic, DPharm, DMLT |
| Certificate or ITI | 6 months to 2 years | Skilled trades and quick jobs | ITI electrician, computer courses |
A general degree is never a waste. Almost every graduate level sarkari exam, from SSC CGL to UPSC, accepts a bachelor's degree in any subject.

Computer, IT and AI courses after 12th
Computer courses after 12th fill a huge share of admission enquiries now. Here is what each one actually gives you.
- BTech in computer science or IT: 4 years, the strongest route into software engineering courses after 12th. Needs PCM and JEE Main or a state test. See software engineer.
- BCA: 3 years, open to most streams, though many colleges ask for maths in 12th. Cheaper than BTech. Follow with MCA for better roles.
- BSc in computer science, data science or IT: 3 or 4 years, good for analyst and teaching careers.
- AI courses after 12th: BTech or BSc programmes with artificial intelligence or data science as a specialisation. You need strong maths. Read AI engineer.
- Cyber security courses after 12th: usually a BTech, BCA or BSc with a cyber security specialisation, or a diploma after a computer degree. See cyber security.
- Digital marketing course after 12th: short courses of 3 to 6 months. Useful alongside a BBA, BCom or BA. See digital marketing.
A word of caution: a 3 month certificate alone rarely gets a good IT job. Use short courses to add to a degree, not to replace one. Our computer courses page lists the useful short options.
Professional courses after 12th for commerce students
Professional courses after 12th mean courses run by a statutory institute that end in a membership and a licence to practise. For commerce students these are the big three.

CA course details after 12th: you register for the Foundation level after passing 12th. Many students do BCom by distance or regular mode alongside. The pass rates are low, so expect to put in serious daily study. BBA course details after 12th: a BBA is 3 years, open to any stream, and is a natural step towards an MBA. A BCom remains the safest base for accounts, bank exams and CA. See commerce courses after 12th for all options.

Hotel management, aviation and air hostess courses after 12th
These service careers suit students who like people, travel and teamwork.
- Hotel management courses after 12th: the government route is the BSc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration, a 3 year course with an optional honours year. Admission is through NCHM JEE, run by NTA as a computer based test. Any stream can apply if English was a subject in 12th, and the council lists no age bar. Jobs include hotel trainee posts, airline catering, railway catering, cruise lines and state tourism corporations. See hotel management.
- Air hostess course after 12th: most air hostess courses after 12th are 6 month to 1 year private diplomas. Airlines hire on their own selection of height, fitness, grooming and communication, so a diploma helps but does not decide selection. Read air hostess and cabin crew before paying any fee.
- Aviation courses after 12th: commercial pilot training needs physics and maths in 12th and a DGCA licence. Aircraft maintenance engineering and airport management are other options. See commercial pilot.
Diploma courses after 12th: ITI, polytechnic and health diplomas
Diploma courses after 12th are the fastest way to a skilled job. They cost less and take less time.
- ITI course after 12th: trades like electrician, fitter, mechanic, welder and COPA. Most last 1 or 2 years. The ITI courses list after 12th is the same as after 10th, but your 12th pass helps for apprenticeships and later railway technician exams. See ITI courses.
- Polytechnic courses after 12th: 3 year engineering diplomas in civil, mechanical, electrical and computer. In many states, 12th science students can join directly in the second year; check your state's rules. See polytechnic diploma courses.
- Health diplomas: DMLT lab technician, DPharm, OT technician and radiology diplomas of 2 years.
Best courses after 12th for girls with high salary
Every course here is open to girls. When parents ask for the best courses after 12th for girl students with high salary, I usually suggest these, based on what has worked for my students:
- CA or CS, which reward hard work and allow practice from home later.
- BTech in computer science, followed by a software role.
- MBBS, BDS, BSc Nursing and physiotherapy for healthcare careers.
- BA LLB through CLAT for law and judiciary.
- Any degree followed by bank, SSC or state exams. See government jobs for women.
How to pick the best courses after 12th, and what they cost
Fees vary widely. Government colleges and universities charge much less than private ones, often a small fraction. A general degree in a government college can cost a few thousand rupees a year. Private engineering, medical and design colleges can cost several lakh a year. Always check the fee for the full course, not one year, and ask about hostel costs.
Before you pay any admission fee, check four things:
- Is the college approved by the right body, such as UGC for universities, AICTE for technical courses, or the council for nursing, pharmacy or medical courses?
- Will the degree let you sit for the government exams you have in mind?
- Where did last year's students actually get jobs? Ask current students, not the brochure.
- Can your family manage the full fee without heavy debt?
Still unsure which way to go? Try this quick quiz.
Then read career options after 12th to see where each course leads, and entrance exams after 12th for the tests you need to plan for.
