Students often ask me two things first: what is CAT exam, and what is the CAT exam syllabus. CAT stands for Common Admission Test. It is the computer based MBA entrance exam run by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) every year. Your CAT score is used for MBA and PGP admission at the IIMs and at many other good business schools. In this guide I cover eligibility, the exam pattern, the syllabus section by section, how IIMs use your score, other MBA entrance exams like CMAT, MAT and XAT, and a simple preparation plan.

What is CAT exam: full form, meaning and purpose

The CAT exam full form is Common Admission Test. If you are asking "CAT exam kya hai" or "CAT exam is for what purpose", the short answer is this: it is the door to a two year MBA or PGP at the IIMs. One IIM conducts it each cycle by rotation, on behalf of all IIMs. Many non-IIM institutes also accept CAT scores, so one exam can open several doors.

CAT is not a recruitment exam. It does not give you a job directly. It gives you a seat in a management programme, and the job comes later through campus placement. If you want to understand the full MBA route first, read my guide on MBA course details.

CAT exam eligibility and age limit

PointWhat the official notice says
DegreeBachelor's degree in any stream from a recognised university
Minimum marks50% or equivalent CGPA; 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates
Final year studentsCan apply, if they finish the degree before joining
Work experienceNot required to sit the exam; some IIMs give extra points for it at selection
Age limitNo upper age limit in the CAT eligibility rules
AttemptsNo cap; you can write CAT in any year you are eligible

So eligibility for CAT exam is simple: BA, BCom, BSc, BBA, BTech, any degree works. Students from BCom, BBA and engineering are the most common, but arts students do well too, especially in the verbal section. Reservation follows Government of India norms for GEN, EWS, OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwD. Always read the eligibility page on iimcat.ac.in for the current cycle, because small rules can change.

CAT exam pattern: sections, duration and total marks

CAT is a computer based test of 120 minutes. It has three sections, and each section has a fixed 40 minutes. You cannot jump between sections. The exam runs in three slots on the test day (morning, afternoon and evening), and your result is normalised across slots.

SectionTimeWhat it tests
VARC: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension40 minutesReading speed, understanding, English usage
DILR: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning40 minutesReading data sets, puzzles, arrangements
QA: Quantitative Ability40 minutesMaths up to class 10 level, applied smartly
  • Question types: multiple choice questions (MCQ) and TITA (Type In The Answer, where you type a number or answer).
  • Marking: +3 for every correct answer. A wrong MCQ costs 1 mark. TITA questions have no negative marking.
  • CAT exam total marks: 3 times the number of questions. The question count can change slightly from cycle to cycle, so check the latest notice.

IIMs look at sectional scores too, not just the total. Some IIMs ask for a minimum percentile in each section and a positive raw score in all three. So you cannot skip a section and hope the others carry you.

CAT exam syllabus for MBA: section-wise topics

The IIMs do not publish an official CAT exam syllabus. But the type of questions has stayed stable over many years, so the topic list below is what students actually prepare. These are also the main CAT exam subjects.

VARC syllabus

  • Reading comprehension: several long passages on topics like economics, history, science, philosophy and society.
  • Para jumbles: put shuffled sentences in the right order.
  • Para summary: pick the best summary of a short paragraph.
  • Odd sentence out: find the sentence that does not fit.

DILR syllabus

  • Data interpretation: tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, caselets.
  • Logical reasoning: seating and linear arrangements, team selection, scheduling, tournaments and games, Venn diagrams, routes and networks.
  • Questions come in sets of 4 to 6 linked questions. Choosing the right sets is half the battle.

QA syllabus

  • Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, averages, mixtures, simple and compound interest, time and work, time speed distance.
  • Algebra: linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, functions, logarithms, progressions.
  • Geometry and mensuration: triangles, circles, polygons, coordinate geometry, areas and volumes.
  • Number system and modern maths: divisibility, remainders, permutations and combinations, probability, sets.

Arithmetic and algebra usually carry the most weight in QA. If maths scares you, start there. The same core topics make up most of the MBA entrance exam syllabus for CMAT, MAT and state CETs, so your preparation carries over.

How IIMs use CAT scores for admission

A good CAT percentile only gets you shortlisted. It is not the final selection. Each IIM publishes its own admission policy, and most follow three steps:

  1. Cut-off check: minimum overall and sectional percentiles, set separately for each category.
  2. Shortlist score: CAT score plus class 10 marks, class 12 marks, graduation marks, work experience and diversity points (gender, academic background). Weights differ by IIM.
  3. Final round: a Written Ability Test (WAT) or essay and a Personal Interview (PI). The final merit list mixes the interview, WAT, CAT score, academics and work experience.

For example, recent IIM policies give the CAT score more than half the points at the shortlist stage, but at the final stage the interview carries the biggest weight. This is why your class 10 and 12 marks still matter, and why interview practice is as important as mock tests.

CAT vs CMAT, MAT and XAT: other MBA entrance exams

ExamConducted byUsed forHow it differs from CAT
CATIIMs, by rotationIIMs and many other B-schoolsHardest of the group, strong focus on reading and reasoning
CMAT examNational Testing Agency (NTA)AICTE approved MBA and PGDM collegesEasier maths; has a general awareness section
MAT examA national management associationMany private MBA collegesHeld several times a year; easier level; includes general knowledge
XAT examA private institute for a group of member collegesMember private B-schoolsHas decision making questions and general knowledge
State MBA CETsState bodiesGovernment and private colleges in that stateEasier, fees in state colleges are low

Most of my students write CAT plus one or two of these. The CMAT exam pattern, XAT exam pattern and MAT exam syllabus overlap heavily with CAT, so one solid preparation covers them all. Check each exam's own website for its fee, form and colleges list. For a wider view of entrance tests, see my list of entrance exams and courses after graduation.

How to prepare for CAT exam: a 9 month plan

Most students who prepare seriously take 6 to 12 months alongside college or a job. Here is the plan I give:

  1. Months 1 to 3, basics: revise class 8 to 10 maths (arithmetic first), read one long article every day (editorials, science and history essays), and solve 2 DILR sets daily.
  2. Months 4 to 6, practice: topic tests for every QA chapter, 2 to 3 RC passages daily with timing, and harder DILR sets. Keep an error notebook.
  3. Months 7 to 9, mocks: one full 120 minute mock a week, then two a week in the last two months. Spend more time analysing a mock than writing it.
  4. After the exam: start WAT and interview practice: current affairs, your graduation subjects, and why you want an MBA.

CAT exam preparation tips that work: use previous papers from the official site, pick easy questions first in each section, never guess blindly on MCQs, and protect sectional balance. The time is fixed per section, so speed comes only from practice.

Is CAT exam tough, and what comes after it

Yes, CAT is tough because lakhs of graduates compete for limited IIM seats. It is one of the toughest exams in India. But the questions are about thinking, not memory. Students from small towns with average English have cleared it by reading every day for a year. Do not judge yourself by your first mock score.

After CAT you do a two year MBA or PGP with a summer internship. Placements lead to roles in finance, marketing, sales, operations, consulting, analytics and HR. Read about HR manager, investment banker and jobs after graduation for pay and work details. If you want a sarkari naukri instead, many graduates write CAT alongside bank jobs exams or the RBI Grade B exam, since the reasoning and English preparation overlaps.

CAT exam form, fee and official website

The only official website is iimcat.ac.in. Registration, the CAT exam form, the admit card, CAT exam slots, test cities and results are all handled there. In the latest notice, the fee was ₹2,700 for General, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates and ₹1,350 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Fees and dates change each cycle, so confirm them on the official site before you pay. Each IIM's admission policy is on that IIM's own website.

Questions students ask

What is the CAT exam syllabus?

The IIMs do not publish an official syllabus. Questions come from three areas: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. QA covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry, number system and modern maths up to class 10 level.

What is the eligibility for CAT exam?

You need a bachelor's degree in any stream with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, or 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Final year students can apply if they complete the degree before joining. Check the eligibility page on iimcat.ac.in for the current cycle.

Is there an age limit for CAT exam?

No. The CAT eligibility rules do not set an upper age limit, and there is no limit on attempts. Working professionals in their late twenties and thirties write CAT every year.

What is the CAT exam duration and pattern?

CAT is a 120 minute computer based test with three sections of 40 minutes each: VARC, DILR and QA. You get +3 for a correct answer and lose 1 mark for a wrong MCQ. TITA questions have no negative marking.

What are the CAT exam fees?

In the latest notice the fee was ₹2,700 for General, EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates and ₹1,350 for SC, ST and PwD candidates. Fees can change each cycle, so confirm on iimcat.ac.in before paying.

Is CAT exam tough?

It is tough because of the competition, not because of difficult theory. The maths is school level and the rest is reading and reasoning. Six to twelve months of steady practice with regular mock tests is what most successful students put in.

Which is easier, CAT or CMAT?

CMAT, conducted by NTA, is generally easier and has a general awareness section. CAT is harder but opens the IIMs and many top B-schools. Many students write both, since the preparation overlaps.
