Lawyer salary in India ranges from a small stipend for a new advocate in a district court to very high pay for senior corporate and litigation lawyers, so the route you choose matters a lot. To become a lawyer you need an LLB from a college recognised by the Bar Council of India: either a 5 year integrated course after 12th or a 3 year LLB after graduation. This page explains both, the entrance exams, fees, government jobs and what advocates really earn.

What a lawyer does day to day

A lawyer advises people and organisations on their rights and duties, drafts documents, and argues cases in courts and tribunals. The work changes a lot by field:

  • Litigation: court work in civil, criminal, family, tax or service matters. Most of the day is spent in court, meeting clients and drafting petitions.
  • Corporate law: contracts, company formation, mergers, compliance and disputes for businesses. Mostly office work with long hours.
  • Government and public roles: public prosecutors, government counsel, legal officers in banks and PSUs, and judges.
  • Other areas: intellectual property, cyber law, labour law, taxation, policy research and legal journalism.

Law courses and LLB course details

CourseDurationWho can join
BA LLB, BBA LLB, B.Com LLB, B.Sc LLB (integrated)5 years12th pass, any stream
LLB (3 year)3 yearsGraduates in any subject
LLM1 or 2 yearsAfter LLB
Diploma and certificate law courses (cyber law, corporate law, IPR)6 months to 1 yearAdd-on knowledge; does not allow you to practise

So the BA LLB course duration is 5 years, and the LLB course duration after graduation is 3 years. Both let you enrol as an advocate if the college and course are approved by the Bar Council of India. If you are still choosing a stream, see courses after 12th arts and jobs after BA.

A word of caution: an LLB correspondence course or online LLB course is generally not accepted by the Bar Council for enrolment as an advocate. Online law courses can teach you useful topics, but for practice you need a regular LLB from an approved college. Check the list of approved colleges on the Bar Council website before paying any fee.

LLB entrance exam options

  • CLAT: run by the Consortium of National Law Universities for the 5 year integrated course and LLM at most National Law Universities. It tests English, current affairs, legal reasoning, logical reasoning and basic maths.
  • AILET: run by National Law University Delhi for its own seats.
  • State law entrance tests: several states hold a common law entrance test for 3 year and 5 year LLB seats in their colleges.
  • University tests and CUET: many central and state universities use their own test or CUET, and some admit on marks.

For a 3 year LLB entrance exam, the syllabus is usually similar: English, general knowledge, legal aptitude and reasoning. The LLB entrance exam syllabus and minimum marks are in each university's prospectus. There is no upper age limit for CLAT at present, but rules can change, so read the latest notice on the consortium website.

LLB course fees

LLB course fees in government college law faculties and state universities can be very low, sometimes only a few thousand to a few tens of thousands of rupees per year. National Law Universities charge more, often a few lakh rupees per year including hostel, though fee waivers exist for some categories. Private universities can charge from a few lakh to well over ₹15 lakh for the full BA LLB course. 3 years LLB course fees follow the same pattern: lowest in government colleges and university departments, highest in private institutes. Always ask about scholarships before deciding.

How you start practising: Bar Council enrolment and AIBE

After passing LLB you enrol with your State Bar Council. To keep practising, you must also pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) conducted by the Bar Council of India. Most new advocates then join a senior advocate's office as a junior. These first years are where you learn drafting, court procedure and how to handle clients.

Later, advocates who want to file cases directly in the Supreme Court can take the Advocate on Record exam held by the Supreme Court, after a set period of practice and training. The current rules are on the Supreme Court website.

Lawyer salary in India by field

This table gives broad ranges. Real income depends on city, court, field, and your own reputation.

Type of lawyerEarly years (per month)After 5 to 8 years (per month)
Junior advocate in district courtsabout ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 stipendvaries hugely with own clients; ₹50,000 to ₹2 lakh is common for an established practice
Criminal lawyerlow at first, often fee per hearingcan be high in busy courts; depends entirely on reputation
Corporate lawyer in a large law firmabout ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh or more₹2 lakh to ₹5 lakh or more
In-house legal executive in a companyabout ₹25,000 to ₹60,000₹80,000 to ₹2 lakh
Government lawyer or legal officeras per government or bank pay scalerises with promotion and pay revisions

Criminal lawyer salary is mostly fee-based, per appearance or per case, so it grows only as people start trusting your work. Advocate salary per month in the first two years is often the biggest shock for families. Many young advocates earn little while they learn. Some states pay a stipend to new advocates; check with your State Bar Council. Corporate lawyer salary in India is far higher at the start, but those seats are few and go mostly to graduates of top law schools. See how law compares on highest paying jobs in India.

LLB govt jobs and government jobs after LLB

  • Civil judge: through the state judicial services exam held by the High Court or state PSC. Rules on minimum years of practice have changed recently, so check your state's latest notification.
  • Assistant public prosecutor: state recruitment for criminal courts.
  • Law officer in public sector banks: through IBPS SO and bank notifications.
  • Legal officers in PSUs, ministries and regulators.
  • JAG entry in the armed forces: for law graduates who meet the marks and age rules.
  • Government counsel panels in courts and tribunals.

Government lawyer salary depends on the post. Judicial officers and central government legal posts follow official pay scales, while panel counsel are paid per case. Check each notification for pay and eligibility.

Is law a good career? Pros and cons

Pros: respected profession, many paths, no age limit to practise, and a strong base for judiciary, civil services and policy work.

Cons: slow income in litigation at the start, long hours in corporate firms, and success that depends heavily on networks. You need patience, good reading habits and clear writing.

How to become a lawyer after 12th

  1. Decide between the 5 year integrated route and graduation followed by a 3 year LLB.
  2. Prepare for CLAT, AILET or your state law test with daily newspaper reading and reasoning practice.
  3. Pick a Bar Council approved college; check the approval yourself.
  4. Do internships every year with advocates, courts, firms or legal aid bodies.
  5. After LLB, enrol, clear AIBE, and choose litigation, corporate work or the judiciary.
