The highest paying government jobs in India are the Group A posts you join through UPSC, such as IAS, IPS and IFS, plus officer posts in the defence forces, the Indian Engineering Services, the RBI, SBI and the big PSUs. I have seen students from small towns reach every one of these. What they shared was not money or contacts. It was a clear target, the right degree at the right age, and two to four years of steady study.

Which government job has highest salary?
If you mean the very top of the ladder, the highest salary in government job pay rules belongs to the Cabinet Secretary at Level 18, a fixed ₹2,50,000 basic per month. Next comes Level 17 at ₹2,25,000 for Secretaries to the Government of India. These posts are usually held by senior IAS officers near the end of a long career, so think of them as where the road can lead, not where it starts.
If you mean the best starting pay for a fresher, the answer is a small group of entry posts that sit at Level 10 (₹56,100 basic) or have their own bank scale. IAS, IPS, IFS, the engineering services and commissioned officers in the forces all start at Level 10. RBI Grade B and SBI PO use bank scales with good allowances, so their starting package is in the same range or better.
So when someone asks me which job has highest salary in India government service, I say: the civil services win over a full career, because promotions keep coming and the posts carry housing, vehicle and staff. Bank officer jobs pay very well at the start but the top of the scale is lower.
How government salary is calculated
Central government jobs follow the 7th CPC pay matrix. Your level decides your starting basic pay. On top of basic you get:
- DA (Dearness Allowance): a percentage of basic that goes up twice a year with prices.
- HRA: paid by city class. X class cities pay the most, then Y, then Z. If you live in government housing, you do not get HRA.
- Transport allowance: a fixed monthly amount that depends on level and city.
- Deductions: 10 percent of basic plus DA goes to NPS for pension, plus income tax and small items.
For the current DA and an estimate of in-hand pay at these levels, see the salary box at the top of this page. You can also try your own numbers below.
| Pay level | Starting basic | Example posts |
|---|---|---|
| Level 7 | ₹44,900 | Income Tax Inspector, Assistant Section Officer (SSC CGL) |
| Level 8 | ₹47,600 | Assistant Audit Officer (SSC CGL) |
| Level 10 | ₹56,100 | IAS, IPS, IFS, IES, Lieutenant in the Army |
| Level 13 | ₹1,23,100 | Senior officers after many years of service |
| Level 17 | ₹2,25,000 | Secretary to the Government of India |
| Level 18 | ₹2,50,000 | Cabinet Secretary |

Top 10 government jobs with high salary, explained
1. IAS officer
You run a district as Collector, then move to state and central ministries. Work is heavy and public, with transfers every few years. The exam is the UPSC Civil Services exam: General candidates get 6 attempts, OBC 9, and SC and ST have no limit on attempts within the age limit.
2. IPS officer
Same exam as IAS. You lead police in a district and later a range or state. Physical fitness and night work are part of the job.
3. IFS (Foreign Service)
Same exam. You serve in Indian embassies abroad and in the Ministry of External Affairs. Foreign postings carry extra allowances.
4. Indian Engineering Services
For engineers in civil, mechanical, electrical and electronics branches. You join as a Group A officer in Railways, CPWD, defence and telecom departments. The exam has a 500 mark prelims, a 600 mark mains and a 200 mark personality test.
5. Defence officer
Lieutenant rank starts at Level 10 with military service pay, free medical care, subsidised housing and canteen. Entry is through NDA after 12th, or CDS and AFCAT after graduation. See Indian Army jobs for all entries.
6. RBI Grade B officer
You work on monetary policy, bank supervision and currency management at the Reserve Bank. The pay scale and allowances are set by RBI and printed in each notification.
7. SBI PO
The SBI PO notice gives a starting basic of ₹48,480 in Junior Management Grade Scale I with 4 advance increments, plus DA, HRA and other bank benefits. You start as an officer in a branch and can move to manager roles fast.
8. ISRO and DRDO scientist
Research and engineering on satellites, rockets, missiles and defence systems. Very high job satisfaction, but seats are few and the selection is tough.
9. PSU engineer
Large central PSUs in power, oil and steel hire engineers through GATE. PSUs pay on their own scale with perks, so pay differs from one company to another.
10. Assistant Audit Officer and other SSC CGL top posts
The best SSC CGL posts sit at Level 7 and Level 8. Work is mostly desk based in audit, tax, excise and ministries, with fixed hours in most offices.
Other good paying options include civil judge, assistant professor and state PCS officer. Their pay is set by the state or the UGC rules, so check the notice for the exact scale.
High salary govt jobs after BTech
Engineers have more high paying doors than any other group. In order of pay and status:
- Indian Engineering Services (UPSC ESE): Group A at Level 10.
- PSU jobs through GATE: one exam score opens many companies.
- ISRO and DRDO: scientist and engineer posts with their own recruitment.
- Technical entries in the forces: officer posts for engineers, with SSB selection.
- SSC JE and RRB JE: junior engineer posts, lower pay but far more seats.
Many engineers prepare for GATE and ESE together because the technical syllabus overlaps.
Easy government jobs with high salary: the honest answer
I get this question every week. There is no government job that is both easy to get and among the highest paid. When pay is high, lakhs of people apply. What you can find is a balance: posts with good pay where competition is lower than UPSC.
- SSC CGL Level 7 and Level 8 posts: one exam, good pay, all-India seats.
- Bank PO and clerk exams: shorter syllabus than UPSC, many vacancies each year. See all bank jobs.
- State PCS: often less crowded than UPSC, and you serve in your home state.
- Specialist officer posts: if you have a professional degree (law, IT, agriculture, CA), banks and PSUs hire specialists with less competition.
If an exam is called easy, it usually means more seats, not less study.
Highest paying government jobs in India after 12th
After 12th, NDA is the one route that leads straight to a Level 10 officer post, after three years of training at the academy. Most other jobs open to 12th pass students sit at Level 2 to Level 4, such as clerk, constable and ticket clerk posts. They are good starting points, and many people later clear graduate level exams while in service. See govt jobs after 12th for the full list.
How to choose the right high salary govt job
Do not chase the highest number. Chase the job you can clear and enjoy for 30 years.
- Check your age first. Many top exams close at 30 or 32 for General candidates. Our govt job age limit guide shows the limits and relaxations.
- Match your degree. ESE and GATE need engineering. UPSC, SSC and banks accept any graduate.
- Be honest about time. UPSC preparation usually takes one to two years of full time study. Bank and SSC exams often take six months to a year.
- Keep a backup. Many UPSC aspirants also write state PCS, SSC CGL or bank exams.
