RPF Salary, Constable Eligibility and Exam Pattern

The RPF salary for a Constable starts at a basic pay of ₹21,700 a month (Level 3 of the 7th CPC pay matrix). A Sub-Inspector starts at ₹35,400 (Level 6). DA, HRA, transport allowance, railway passes and medical care are added on top. RPF full form and what the job involves

RPF stands for Railway Protection Force. It is an armed force of the Union under the Ministry of Railways. Many students search RPF full form salary or RPF full form in salary together, so here is the short answer: it is the Railway Protection Force, and the railway RPF salary follows the central pay matrix.

An RPF constable protects railway property, passengers and goods. Day to day, the RPF job means:

• Duty at stations, platforms and on running trains, often in shifts and at night.
• Checking unauthorised vendors, touts and ticketless entry into reserved areas.
• Guarding goods sheds, yards, workshops and railway property.
• Helping lost children, women passengers and elderly travellers.
• Crowd control during festivals and special trains.

RPF also has a special battalion force, the Railway Protection Special Force (RPSF), which is deployed where extra security is needed. Life in uniform is disciplined. You will be posted anywhere in your zone and sometimes outside it.

Who conducts the RPF exam: recent cycles and the new rules

In the recent cycles, the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) ran the RPF exam through two notices: CEN RPF 01 for Sub-Inspectors (Executive) and CEN RPF 02 for Constables (Executive). Candidates applied on the official RRB websites.

The Ministry of Railways has since amended the RPF Rules through a gazette notification. Under the amended rules, direct recruitment of Sub-Inspectors and Constables in the executive cadre is to follow the Staff Selection Commission procedure for Central Armed Police Forces. Posts, eligibility and age limit

Age limit for Constable: the amended RPF Rules say a direct recruit Constable (Executive) must be above 18 and below 23 years on the date of the recruitment notification. The last RRB-run constable cycle used a wider band that included a one-time relaxation, so do not rely on old numbers. SC and ST candidates usually get 5 years and OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 3 years of upper age relaxation, as per central rules. For Sub-Inspector, the age band will be given in the next notice.

RPF salary per month: pay level and breakdown

RPF ki salary is made of the same parts as other central government jobs:

• Basic pay: ₹21,700 for Constable, ₹35,400 for Sub-Inspector at entry. It rises about 3% every year.
• Dearness Allowance: a percentage of basic, revised twice a year by the government.
• HRA: based on whether you are posted in an X, Y or Z class city. Barracks or quarters change this.
• Transport Allowance: a fixed monthly sum plus DA on it.
• Other allowances: such as kit and uniform allowance and duty-related allowances under RPF and railway rules.
• Deductions: 10% of basic plus DA to the pension scheme (NPS), group insurance and tax if applicable.

RPF ranks and salary: constable to inspector

The RPF rank ladder is similar to state police. The table shows the usual pay level for each rank and the starting basic of that level.

So the RPF ASI salary starts from Level 5 and the RPF inspector salary from Level 7. Above Inspector come gazetted RPF officer ranks such as Assistant Security Commissioner, filled by promotion and by officer-level recruitment, with higher pay levels. Promotion depends on vacancies, service record and departmental courses. If promotion is late, the MACP scheme still raises your pay level once you complete 10, 20 and 30 years.

RPF exam pattern and selection process

In the last RRB-run cycle, selection had these stages: Computer Based Test (CBT), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Physical Measurement Test (PMT), document verification and medical examination. The CBT for constables looked like this:

Time was 90 minutes, with one third of a mark cut for every wrong answer. The paper was set around 10th level and offered in 15 languages.

Physical tests in the last cycle (constable): male candidates ran 1600 metres in 5 minutes 45 seconds, with a 14 feet long jump and 4 feet high jump. Female candidates ran 800 metres in 3 minutes 40 seconds, with a 9 feet long jump and 3 feet high jump.

Height and chest under the amended rules: 170 cm height for the executive cadre, and chest 80 cm unexpanded and 85 cm expanded. Female and reserved category standards follow the CAPF recruitment standards, and candidates under 20 may get a small relaxation on a medical officer's certificate. Because the selection procedure is moving to the SSC CAPF model, the RPF exam pattern for the next cycle may follow that format. Check the new notice before you plan.

Training after selection

Selected constables go through basic training at RPF training centres, where they learn drill, weapons, law, railway rules and passenger handling. Sub-Inspectors train at the Jagjivan Ram RPF Academy in Lucknow. Training is tough on the body, so start running and exercise well before the exam. After training you are posted to a post, outpost or RPSF battalion.

How to prepare for the RPF exam

• General Awareness carries the most marks. Read static GK (history, geography, polity, science) and 6 months of current affairs. Learn basic facts about Indian Railways.
• Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, time and work, speed and distance, simple interest. Practise 20 questions a day.
• Reasoning: series, coding, blood relations, directions, analogies.
• Physical: run 4 to 5 days a week and build up to the target time. Practise long jump and high jump with a coach or PT teacher.
• Take timed mock tests in the last 6 to 8 weeks. Avoid blind guessing because of negative marking.
