What is the BSF job

BSF full form is Border Security Force. It is a Central Armed Police Force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, and one of the border guarding forces of India along with ITBP, SSB and Assam Rifles. As per the Ministry of Home Affairs, BSF guards India's land borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh, and also a part of the Line of Control along with the Army.

A BSF jawan's work on the border means:

  • Patrolling on foot, by vehicle or by boat along the border fence.
  • Manning border outposts day and night in shifts.
  • Stopping smuggling, illegal crossing and infiltration.
  • Duty in deserts, marshland, riverine areas and hills, in heat and cold.

BSF units also go on internal security and election duty when called. The work is physically hard and you stay away from family for long stretches, but it carries real respect in villages and towns. A BSF career suits young people who are fit and like an outdoor, disciplined life.

BSF constable salary

The BSF constable salary starts at ₹21,700 basic for GD and tradesman alike. So a BSF GD salary per month, a BSF sweeper salary and the salary of a cook or barber constable all begin from the same basic. People asking "BSF ki salary kitni hai" or "BSF ka salary kitna hai" usually mean this constable figure plus allowances.

BSF head constable salary

The BSF head constable salary is Level 4, ₹25,500 basic. This covers the BSF head constable ministerial salary (office and clerk work) and the BSF HC RO RM salary in the communication wing, where you handle radio sets and network equipment.

BSF ASI and SI salary

The BSF ASI salary starts at Level 5 with ₹29,200 basic. The BSF SI salary starts at Level 6 with ₹35,400 basic. An SI commands a group of jawans at a border outpost and is a key link between officers and men.

BSF assistant commandant and officer salary

Assistant Commandant is the first officer rank, at Level 10 with ₹56,100 basic. A BSF commandant salary is Level 13, and that rank is reached only by promotion over many years. For the AC exam, see our CAPF AC guide.

How BSF monthly salary is made up

Gross pay is basic plus several allowances. The main ones:

  • Dearness Allowance: a percentage on top of basic, updated two times every year to match price rise.
  • House Rent Allowance: paid only when you do not get a government house. Rates differ for X, Y and Z class cities.
  • Transport Allowance: a flat monthly sum, higher in big cities, with DA on it.
  • Area-based allowances: under the 7th CPC Risk and Hardship matrix, CAPF personnel in high altitude, field or counter insurgency areas can get extra allowances such as High Altitude Allowance.

Deductions include the NPS pension contribution, insurance and income tax where it applies. You can test different city classes here:

Basic pay rises by one cell of the pay matrix every year. After five such increments, a constable's basic of ₹21,700 reaches about ₹25,200, and a Head Constable's ₹25,500 reaches about ₹29,600. A promotion moves you to a higher level on top of this. Our page on how allowances work has more.

BSF exam pattern and selection steps

Constable GD through SSC

Most people enter BSF this way. As per the latest SSC notice:

  1. Computer based exam: 80 questions for 160 marks in 60 minutes. Each of the four parts (reasoning, GK, basic maths, and a language paper in English or Hindi) has 20 questions. A quarter mark is cut for each wrong answer. You can take the paper in English, Hindi or one of 13 regional languages.
  2. PET: men must cover 5 km in 24 minutes, women 1.6 km in 8.5 minutes. Ladakh region has separate timings.
  3. PST: men need 170 cm height and 80 cm chest with 5 cm expansion; women need 157 cm. Scheduled Tribes and some hill and north-east groups get lower standards.
  4. Medical and document check. NCC A, B or C certificate holders get 2, 3 or 5 percent bonus marks.

Which force you get is decided by merit and by the order of forces you list in the form. If you want BSF, put it first. Our SSC GD Constable page explains the exam in full.

Tradesman, HC RO/RM and office posts

BSF holds its own bharti for tradesman and radio posts on its recruitment portal. The BSF tradesman exam pattern usually includes physical standard and efficiency tests, a trade test in your skill, a written test and a medical, but the stages, their order and the age limit are set in each notice. The BSF RO RM exam pattern is more technical, since these posts handle radio and communication equipment. The exact pattern changes with each notice, so read it closely. For HC Ministerial and ASI Steno, the combined CAPF exam has a CBT, a typing or shorthand test, PST and medical.

Sub-Inspector and Assistant Commandant

BSF SI posts are filled through the SSC CPO exam: two papers, a physical test with a 100 m sprint, a 1.6 km run and jumps, and a medical. AC posts come through UPSC.

BSF training, posting and promotions

After joining, recruits do basic training at a BSF training centre. It covers drill, weapons, map reading, border management and physical endurance. Probation for direct entry posts in CAPFs is generally two years. Since appointment comes before training, the BSF training salary equals regular Level pay for your post.

After training you join a battalion and rotate between border and other postings. Each force has its own promotion rules, so check BSF's current rules. As an example, the CRPF career prospects page lists these minimums:

  • Constable to Head Constable: at least 8 years of service plus promotion courses.
  • Head Constable to Sub-Inspector: at least 5 years as Head Constable, with longer total service and courses.
  • Sub-Inspector to Inspector, and Inspector to Assistant Commandant: at least 3 years in the rank plus courses.
  • Officers: at least 5 years each as AC and Deputy Commandant before the next rank, when posts are free.

When a promotion is delayed, central government career progression rules may give a financial upgrade; ask your unit about the current scheme. A graduate entering as SI or AC moves up the ladder much faster.

How to prepare for BSF

  • Fitness first: start with 2 km runs and build to 5 km in under 24 minutes over three to four months.
  • BSF exam syllabus: reasoning, GK and current affairs, class 10 maths and one language. The level is basic, but competition is high.
  • Daily routine: one hour maths, one hour reasoning, 30 minutes GK, a full mock test every few days.
  • Documents: keep caste, domicile and NCC certificates ready in the correct format.

With steady work, 6 to 8 months is enough for most students. Check your eligibility on the age limit for govt jobs page.
