The D Pharma course (Diploma in Pharmacy) is the shortest route to becoming a registered pharmacist in India. It takes 2 years after 12th science, plus practical training. If you want a longer path with more industry jobs, there is the 4 year B Pharm course, and the 6 year Pharm D course for clinical work in hospitals. This guide compares all three, with eligibility, subjects, entrance exams, fees, jobs and salary.
Pharmacy course options after 12th
All pharmacy course programmes in India are regulated by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). Only a college approved by PCI gives a qualification that lets you register with your State Pharmacy Council. Without registration you cannot legally run a chemist shop or work as a pharmacist.
| Course | Duration | Eligibility | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| D Pharma (Diploma in Pharmacy) | 2 years plus practical training | 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths | Retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacist posts |
| B Pharm (Bachelor of Pharmacy) | 4 years | 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths | Industry, quality, sales, research, M Pharm |
| Pharm D (Doctor of Pharmacy) | 6 years: 5 years study plus 1 year internship | 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Maths | Clinical pharmacy in hospitals, pharmacovigilance |

D Pharma holders can usually join B Pharm directly in the second year through lateral entry, where the state allows it. B Pharm graduates can also join a 3 year Pharm D (Post Baccalaureate) course.
D Pharma course details: duration, eligibility, subjects
The D Pharm course duration is 2 academic years. After the exams you complete practical training in a hospital or community pharmacy, for the number of hours PCI sets, before you can register. You need 12th with Physics and Chemistry plus Biology or Maths. Minimum marks and age rules vary by state, so check your counselling notice.

| Year 2 | Pharmacology, community pharmacy and management, biochemistry and clinical pathology, pharmacotherapeutics, hospital and clinical pharmacy, pharmacy law and ethics |
Many students search for D Pharm course details because the name is written both ways: D Pharm and D Pharma mean the same diploma. The course is mostly practical. You learn to read prescriptions, prepare simple dosage forms, store medicines safely and counsel patients.
B Pharm course details and duration
The B Pharm course duration is 4 years, split into 8 semesters. It goes much deeper into how medicines are made, tested and approved.
- Years 1 and 2: human anatomy and physiology, pharmaceutical analysis, organic and physical chemistry, pharmaceutics, biochemistry, pathophysiology, microbiology.
- Years 3 and 4: medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, industrial pharmacy, pharmaceutical jurisprudence, biopharmaceutics, quality assurance, novel drug delivery, a project.
Pharmacology final exam questions usually test drug action, side effects and doses, so steady study through the year matters more than last minute cramming.
Pharm D course subjects and details
Pharm D course subjects include pharmacotherapeutics, clinical pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, pharmacokinetics, clinical toxicology and clinical research. The fifth year has ward rounds with doctors, and the sixth year is a full internship. Pharm D suits students who want to work with patients and doctors on correct drug use. Jobs are mostly in large hospitals, clinical research and drug safety (pharmacovigilance).
B Pharma entrance exam and admission
- State entrance tests: many states fill B Pharm and Pharm D seats through their engineering and pharmacy CET or a state counselling.
- Merit: D Pharma seats are mostly filled on 12th marks through state counselling.
- University tests: some central and state universities use CUET or their own test.
- GPAT: for M Pharm admission and scholarship, GPAT is conducted by NBEMS. Check natboard.edu.in for the current bulletin.
