The LIC AAO salary starts at a basic pay of ₹88,635 a month, and the latest Life Insurance Corporation of India notification puts total emoluments at about ₹1,26,000 a month in an A class city. That is among the highest starting packages in any graduate level public sector exam. Here I explain what an Assistant Administrative Officer does, the LIC AAO exam pattern, eligibility, and how this post compares with other LIC jobs like assistant, development officer and agent.
What an LIC AAO does
AAO stands for Assistant Administrative Officer. It is the entry officer post of LIC, the largest life insurer in India and a central public sector body. The Generalist AAO works in branch, divisional and zonal offices on the office side of insurance, not on selling.
The LIC AAO job profile on a normal day can include checking new policy proposals (underwriting), settling maturity and death claims, handling policy servicing like loans, surrender and revival, supervising assistants, handling customer complaints and running office administration. You are a supervising officer from day one, and you may be posted anywhere in India.
Besides Generalists, LIC also recruits specialist AAOs (for example IT, chartered accountant, actuarial and Rajbhasha) and Assistant Engineers in some cycles, through separate notifications with their own eligibility.
LIC AAO salary and pay scale
LIC has its own officer pay scale, not the 7th CPC matrix. As per the latest notification, the AAO scale is ₹88,635, rising by ₹4,385 a year for 14 steps to ₹1,50,025, then by ₹4,750 for 4 steps to ₹1,69,025.
| Part of pay | What it means for a new AAO |
|---|---|
| Starting basic pay | ₹88,635 a month |
| Total emoluments | About ₹1,26,000 a month in an A class city, as per the latest notification |
| Dearness Allowance | A share of basic, revised from time to time |
| HRA and city allowance | Higher in A class cities, lower in smaller towns |
| Pension | Defined Contributory Pension |
| Other benefits | Gratuity, LTC, cash medical benefit, group mediclaim and group personal accident insurance |
So the LIC Assistant Administrative Officer salary is driven by a high basic, plus city linked allowances. The LIC AAO generalist salary and the specialist salary start on the same scale. In smaller cities total pay is lower than the A class figure because HRA and city allowance are lower.
LIC AAO salary in hand and per month
Your LIC AAO salary in hand is total emoluments minus income tax, pension contribution and small deductions. At this income level, income tax is the biggest cut, and your choice of tax regime matters. The LIC AAO salary per month in hand also changes with DA revisions and your posting city. Use your offer letter figures in this tool to see what reaches your account:
After 5 years without promotion, five increments of ₹4,385 take basic pay to ₹1,10,560, and allowances linked to basic rise with it.
LIC AAO eligibility and age limit
- Qualification (Generalist): a bachelor's degree in any subject from a recognised university. The result must be declared by the cut-off date.
- Age: 21 to 30 years on the cut-off date in the notification.
- Relaxation: SC and ST get 5 extra years and OBC gets 3. Persons with disabilities get 10, 13 or 15 years depending on their category. Ex-servicemen and confirmed LIC employees have separate rules.
- Fee in the latest cycle: ₹700 for General, OBC and EWS, and ₹85 for SC, ST and PwBD, plus transaction charges and GST.

LIC AAO exam pattern
The LIC AAO exam has three stages: prelims, mains and interview, followed by a pre-recruitment medical test. Prelims only shortlists. Final merit is mains marks plus interview marks.
Prelims (online, 1 hour, no negative marking)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 35 | 35 | 20 minutes |
| English Language (qualifying only) | 30 | 30 | 20 minutes |
English marks are not counted for ranking, so the prelims merit is out of 70. You must clear each section.
Mains (objective 300 marks in 2 hours, plus a descriptive test)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning Ability | 30 | 90 | 40 minutes |
| General Knowledge and Current Affairs | 30 | 60 | 20 minutes |
| Data Analysis and Interpretation | 30 | 90 | 40 minutes |
| Insurance and Financial Market Awareness | 30 | 60 | 20 minutes |
| English descriptive (letter and essay, typed) | 2 | 25 | 30 minutes |
The descriptive English test is qualifying and is checked only for those who clear the objective part. The interview carries 60 marks, with qualifying marks of 30 for General, EWS and OBC and 27 for SC, ST and PwBD.
LIC AAO exam syllabus and preparation
The prelims is like a bank PO prelims. Mains is where LIC is different, because of the insurance section and the high weight on data analysis.
- Reasoning: puzzles, seating, syllogism, coding, input output, data sufficiency.
- Data Analysis: tables, bar and pie charts, caselets, percentage and ratio work done fast.
- Insurance and Financial Market Awareness: insurance terms, IRDAI basics, LIC facts and schemes, stock market and RBI basics.
- General Knowledge: six months of current affairs, government schemes, static GK.
In my experience, a fresh graduate needs 5 to 7 months of steady practice for this exam. If you are already preparing for IBPS PO or SBI PO, you need only 6 to 8 extra weeks for the insurance section and descriptive writing. Practise typing a letter and an essay on a computer in 30 minutes.
Probation, training and promotions
A new AAO is on probation for one year from joining, which can be extended up to two years. The notification also asks for a service bond, so read that clause before you join. Training is held at LIC training centres and on the job in a branch or divisional office.
Growth comes through departmental promotions: from AAO to Administrative Officer, then Assistant Divisional Manager and higher managerial grades. Each step brings a higher scale and more responsibility, such as running a branch or a section of a divisional office.
Other LIC jobs and insurance PSU careers
When students say "lic jobs" or "lic career", they often mix up very different roles. Here is how they compare:
| Role | Type of work | How pay works |
|---|---|---|
| AAO | Officer, office side | Fixed scale from ₹88,635 basic |
| Assistant | Clerical, office side | Fixed clerical scale, lower than AAO; see the Assistant notification |
| Apprentice Development Officer (ADO) | Builds and leads a team of agents | Stipend during training, then a development officer scale with business targets |
| LIC agent | Sells policies, not an employee | Commission only, no fixed salary |
So the LIC assistant salary is lower than the AAO salary, and the LIC ADO salary and LIC development officer salary depend partly on meeting business targets. An LIC agent salary does not exist in the usual sense: agents earn commission on the policies they sell, and the LIC agent exam is a licensing test, not a job exam. LIC Housing Finance jobs are a different matter: it is a separate company that runs its own recruitment.
Other public sector insurers such as New India Assurance and National Insurance recruit Administrative Officers through their own exams. The NIACL AO salary and NICL AO salary are set in their own notifications, so check the NIACL career and NICL career pages for current figures.
