BSc agriculture course details: eligibility and duration

The BSc agriculture course duration is 4 years, split into 8 semesters. To join, you need 12th with science. Most universities accept Physics, Chemistry and Biology, many also take Maths or Agriculture as the fourth subject, and some states keep reserved seats for students from agriculture streams. Minimum marks are usually around 50%, with relaxation for reserved categories. The exact rule is in each university prospectus.

The final year has a field programme often called RAWE (Rural Agricultural Work Experience), where you live and work with farmers in villages, plus training at research stations and agro-industries. Students tell me this is the part they remember most.

Subjects year by year

  • First year: basics of agronomy, soil science, plant biochemistry, horticulture, agricultural economics, rural sociology and extension.
  • Second year: crop production, plant breeding, entomology (insects), plant pathology (diseases), farm machinery, livestock basics, water management.
  • Third year: seed technology, crop protection, organic farming, agri-marketing, post-harvest technology, farm business management.
  • Fourth year: village and industry attachment, experiential learning modules, project work.

BSc agriculture entrance exam and admission

  • CUET (ICAR-UG): ICAR fills its all India quota seats in state agricultural universities, and seats in its own deemed universities, through CUET UG conducted by NTA. You then join ICAR counselling. Details are on the ICAR and NTA websites.
  • State agriculture entrance exam: most of the seats in state agricultural universities go through a state test or state merit list. Several states use their common entrance test for agriculture too.
  • University tests: some central and state universities hold their own agriculture exam or use CUET scores.

The B Sc agriculture entrance exam usually tests Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Maths or Agriculture) at class 11 and 12 level. Prepare from NCERT books. See all tests on entrance exams after 12th.

Fees for agriculture courses: government vs private

Government colleges cost much less than private ones. In state agricultural universities, total fees are often from around ₹15,000 to ₹1 lakh a year, depending on the state and hostel. Private colleges commonly charge ₹60,000 to ₹2 lakh or more a year. Before paying a private college, confirm that its degree is accepted for state government jobs in your state. Scholarships for SC, ST, OBC and economically weaker students are available through state portals, and ICAR gives some scholarships to students admitted through its quota.

Agriculture government jobs after BSc

Agriculture govt jobs are the main reason many students pick this degree. The biggest employer is the state agriculture department, but banks and central bodies also hire.

Agriculture officer salary and BSc agriculture salary

The agriculture officer salary in most states sits at a gazetted or senior non-gazetted level of the state pay matrix, with DA, HRA and other allowances on top. The assistant agriculture officer salary and agriculture supervisor salary are lower, since these are field-level posts; this is true for the agriculture supervisor salary in Rajasthan as much as in other states. Because every state has its own scale, check the pay level in the official notice and then work out in-hand pay with our salary calculator.

For private jobs, BSc agriculture salary is roughly:

  • Freshers: about ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 a month as field officer, sales officer or farm supervisor.
  • After 5 to 8 years: about ₹40,000 to ₹1 lakh a month as area manager, agronomist or product lead.
  • With MSc, MBA in agribusiness or PhD: higher, especially in research, seed breeding and agri-finance.

An agricultural scientist salary in ICAR starts at Level 10 of the central pay matrix with allowances, and grows with promotions.

BSc agriculture jobs in the private sector

Agriculture jobs for freshers outside government include:

  • Field and sales officers for seed, fertiliser and crop protection firms
  • Farm managers for plantations, orchards and large farms
  • Quality and procurement roles in food processing and export
  • Rural loan officers in banks and microfinance institutions
  • Agri-input dealers, nursery owners, dairy or poultry entrepreneurs
  • Agri-tech and farm advisory work using soil and weather data

Horticulture jobs in India are growing too, in protected cultivation, floriculture, landscaping and fruit processing.

Agricultural engineering courses and jobs

An agriculture engineering course (BTech Agricultural Engineering) is for PCM students. You study farm machinery, irrigation and drainage, soil and water conservation, renewable energy and food processing engineering. Agriculture engineer jobs include machinery firms, irrigation projects, food plants and state agricultural engineering departments. Agricultural engineering salary for freshers is broadly similar to other core engineering branches. Compare branches on our BTech courses page.

Higher study after agriculture courses

You can do an MSc in agronomy, soil science, plant breeding, entomology or agricultural economics, then a PhD. ICAR conducts an entrance for postgraduate seats. With a master's you can clear the ARS exam or teach as an assistant professor after NET. An MBA in agribusiness opens management roles in food and rural finance. Many students also try general exams like UPSC Civil Services, where agriculture is a popular optional subject. For more science options see courses after 12th science and jobs after BSc.
