CA salary is the reason many commerce families push a child towards chartered accountancy, and it is a fair reason. A newly qualified chartered accountant usually starts at roughly ₹7 to 12 lakh a year, and good CAs earn far more within a few years. But the CA course is long and the exams are strict. Before you sign up, read how the course works, what it costs, how many years it takes and where the money really comes from.
What a chartered accountant actually does
A chartered accountant checks, prepares and explains the money side of a business. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) runs the qualification, and only its members can call themselves CAs. Typical work includes:
- Audit: checking a company's accounts and signing an opinion on them. Statutory audit of companies in India can be signed only by a practising CA.
- Taxation: income tax returns, GST, tax planning and handling tax notices.
- Financial reporting and corporate finance: preparing accounts under accounting standards, budgets, fundraising, mergers.
- Advisory: internal controls, risk, business valuation and setting up new companies.
Some CAs open their own practice. Others take salaried jobs. Both paths can pay well, but practice income depends on how many clients you build up over the years.
CA salary in India: from fresher to senior
These are broad yearly ranges, not offers. Your city, the size of your employer, your rank and how many attempts you took all change the number.
| Stage | Rough yearly pay | Rough monthly gross |
|---|---|---|
| Articleship (training) student | Stipend only | A few thousand rupees to about ₹25,000 at large firms |
| Newly qualified CA | ₹7 to 12 lakh | About ₹60,000 to ₹1 lakh |
| CA with 3 to 5 years' experience | ₹12 to 20 lakh | About ₹1 to 1.7 lakh |
| CA with 8 to 10 years in a senior role | ₹20 to 40 lakh or more | Varies widely |
So what is the average salary of a CA in India? Most freshers I have tracked land somewhere between ₹7 and ₹10 lakh, with toppers and those hired by large audit and consulting networks going higher. The CA salary per month, or chartered accountant salary per month, that you actually take home is lower than gross pay after tax and provident fund. Try the calculator below with any offer you get.
Pay climbs fastest for CAs who specialise: international tax, transfer pricing, valuation, forensic audit and financial planning are well paid. CAs who become finance controllers or CFOs at big firms earn among the highest salaries in the private sector. A CA in own practice may earn little in the first few years and a lot later.
CA course details: stages and CA course duration
The chartered accountant course has three exam levels plus practical training. There is no separate CA entrance exam: the Foundation level works as the entry point for 12th pass students.
| Stage | Who can join | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| CA Foundation course | Students who have passed class 12 (you can register earlier, after class 12 exams) | Four papers, study period of a few months before the first attempt |
| CA Intermediate | Foundation passed, or direct entry for graduates (55% for commerce, 60% for others) and some other cases | Six papers in two groups |
| Practical training (articleship) | After Intermediate, as per ICAI rules | Two years under a practising CA, plus ICAI's IT and soft skills courses |
| CA Final | After the required part of articleship | Six papers in two groups, plus self-paced online modules |
How many years is the CA course? If you clear every level on the first try, the CA course duration from class 12 is about four and a half to five years. Many students need extra attempts, so six or seven years is common. Graduates who take direct entry skip Foundation and save some time.
CA exam pattern and CA course subjects
ICAI now holds the CA Foundation exam and the CA Intermediate exam more than once a year. Check icai.org for current sessions, since the schedule has been changing.
- CA Foundation exam: Accounting; Business Laws; Quantitative Aptitude (maths, logical reasoning, statistics); Business Economics. Two papers are written answers and two are objective, and the objective papers have negative marking. You need 40% in each paper and 50% overall.
- CA Intermediate course: Advanced Accounting; Corporate and Other Laws; Taxation (income tax and GST); Cost and Management Accounting; Auditing and Ethics; Financial Management and Strategic Management. Some papers include a share of objective questions.
- CA Final exam: Financial Reporting; Advanced Financial Management; Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics; Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation; Indirect Tax Laws; and an open-book multidisciplinary case study paper.
The same 40% per paper and 50% aggregate rule applies at Intermediate and Final, group by group. These ICAI CA exams are known for strict marking. The CA Final appears in most lists of the toughest exams in India.
CA course fees: what the full journey costs
ICAI's own charges are modest compared with a private degree. Registration fees for Foundation, Intermediate and Final, exam fees for each attempt, and the IT and orientation courses together usually come to roughly ₹70,000 to ₹1 lakh if you pass on time. Extra attempts add exam fees each time. Check the current fee table on icai.org before paying. In short, chartered accountant course fees paid to ICAI are low; the real spending is on coaching and time.
Coaching is the bigger and more variable cost. Some students study only from ICAI's free study material and mock tests. Others pay for classes at every level. Many students do a BCom side by side through regular or distance mode, which adds its own fee. Government colleges cost much less than private ones for that degree.
CA articleship salary and what training is like
During the two years of articleship you work in a CA firm on real audits and tax files. ICAI sets a minimum monthly stipend that depends on the size of the city and your year of training. Large firms in metros usually pay well above the minimum, and small firms in small towns usually pay close to it. Treat articleship as paid learning. The experience you choose (audit, tax, advisory) often shapes your first job.
CA jobs and government jobs for chartered accountants
Chartered accountant jobs are spread across almost every sector:
- Audit and assurance firms, from small local practices to large national networks.
- Finance, accounts and tax teams in companies, banks, insurers and startups.
- Investment banking, equity research and credit analysis. See investment banker.
- Own practice in audit, tax and advisory.
Government jobs for CA candidates are fewer than private ones but worth watching:
- Public sector undertakings: many PSUs recruit finance executives or management trainees and accept CA (and often CMA). See PSU jobs.
- Public sector banks: specialist officer posts in credit, risk and finance sometimes ask for CA. See IBPS SO.
- Regulators and financial bodies: officer posts that list CA among the eligible qualifications appear from time to time.
- Exams for any graduate: a CA with a degree can also take SSC CGL, where CA is a desirable qualification for audit officer posts, or UPSC Civil Services.
- Audit of government companies: practising CA firms empanelled with the Comptroller and Auditor General can be appointed as auditors of government companies.
Skills, pros and cons
| Good side | Hard side |
|---|---|
| High pay and respect, with a wide choice of jobs | Long course and many students need repeat attempts |
| Low fees compared with private degrees | Heavy self-study for years, often alongside articleship |
| Freedom to start your own practice anywhere in India | Busy seasons near tax and audit deadlines mean long hours |
| Skills stay useful in every industry | Laws and standards change, so learning never stops |
You need patience with numbers, careful reading of law, honest work habits and the discipline to study alone. Maths in class 12 helps but is not required.
How to start the CA course after 12th
- Take commerce in class 11 if possible. Read courses after 12th commerce to see how CA fits with other options.
- Register for CA Foundation on the ICAI students' portal once your class 12 exams are done, and use ICAI's study material first.
- Join a BCom alongside if you want a degree as a safety net.
- Choose your articleship firm for learning, not only for stipend.
- If you are unsure between CA, company secretary and CMA, compare the three before you commit.
Questions students ask
CA ki salary kitni hoti hai per month?
A fresher CA usually earns a gross of about ₹60,000 to ₹1 lakh a month, which is roughly ₹7 to 12 lakh a year. After 5 years many earn ₹1 lakh to ₹1.7 lakh a month or more. Take-home pay is lower after tax and provident fund.
What is the CA starting salary in India?
Most newly qualified CAs start between ₹7 and ₹10 lakh a year. Toppers and those placed with large audit or consulting networks in metros can get more. City, firm size and number of attempts all affect the offer.
Is there a CA entrance exam?
There is no separate entrance test. After class 12 you register for CA Foundation, which works as the entry level. Graduates who meet ICAI's marks rules can skip Foundation and register directly for Intermediate.
How many years is the CA course?
About four and a half to five years from class 12 if you pass every level on the first attempt, including two years of articleship. Repeat attempts are common, so many students take six or seven years.
What is the CA exam eligibility for Foundation?
You must have passed class 12 to sit the Foundation exam. You can register after your class 12 exams, and you need to complete the study period set by ICAI before your first attempt.
Are there government jobs for chartered accountants?
Yes. PSUs hire CAs as finance executives, public sector banks have specialist officer posts, and regulators sometimes recruit officers with CA. CAs can also take SSC CGL or UPSC exams like any graduate.
