An interior design course trains you to plan rooms, homes, offices, shops and hotels so they look good, work well and stay within budget. After 12th you can choose a 4 year B.Des, a 3 year B.Sc, a 1 to 2 year diploma or a short certificate. Here I cover course options, duration, fees, entrance tests, skills, interior designer salary and whether it is a good career for you.
What does an interior designer actually do
An interior designer takes an empty or old space and turns it into something useful. On a typical project you meet the client, measure the site, draw the layout, choose materials, lights, furniture and colours, prepare a cost estimate, and then visit the site again and again while carpenters, electricians, painters and plumbers do the work. Half the job is design. The other half is managing people, money and time.
Interior design is not the same as architecture. An architect designs the building structure and must be registered with the Council of Architecture to use the title "architect". An interior designer works inside the structure. If you want to design whole buildings, read our architect page and the NATA exam guide.
Types of interior design course after 12th
| Course | Interior design course duration | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| B.Des in Interior Design or Interior and Spatial Design | 4 years | Full design career in firms and large projects |
| B.Sc in Interior Design | 3 years | A regular degree from a state or private university |
| BVoc or BA in Interior Design | 3 years | Skill-heavy degree with more site and workshop practice |
| Diploma in Interior Design | 1 to 2 years | Faster entry into work or a family furniture or decor business |
| Interior design certificate course | 3 to 12 months | Software, home decor, kitchen or modular furniture skills |
| M.Des or M.Sc in Interior Design | 2 years | Graduates who want senior or teaching roles |
So, interior design course how many years? Usually 3 to 4 years for a degree, and 1 to 2 years for a diploma. A degree interior design course gives you better chances in bigger firms. A diploma works well if you already know the trade through family.
Interior design course qualification and entrance exams
For most courses you need 12th pass from a recognised board. Students from arts, commerce and science can all apply for B.Des and diplomas. Some B.Sc courses ask for a minimum percentage, often around 45 to 50 percent, which varies by college.
Entrance routes for an interior design degree course:
- UCEED: run by IIT Bombay for B.Des programmes at several institutes.
- NID DAT: the National Institute of Design test, for its design programmes.
- University tests and CUET: many state and private universities hold their own design aptitude test or use CUET or 12th marks.
These tests usually check drawing, observation, visual sense, basic maths and reasoning. See our entrance exams after 12th list for more.
Subjects in interior designing course and syllabus
The interior design courses syllabus differs by college, but the core subjects in interior designing course are:
- Basic design, drawing, sketching and colour theory
- Technical drawing and measured drawing of spaces
- Building materials and construction basics
- Furniture design and joinery
- Lighting, electrical layouts, plumbing and services
- History of interiors and styles
- Software: AutoCAD for plans, plus 3D modelling and rendering tools
- Estimation, costing and site management
- Sustainable interior design: low-waste materials, daylight and energy use
- Internship and a final project or thesis
An AutoCAD interior design course on its own is a useful short add-on, but it is a tool, not a full qualification.
Interior design courses fees
Fees depend on the type of institute. Government and state university courses cost much less than private ones. As a broad guide, a degree at a government institute may cost from under ₹1 lakh to a few lakh rupees in total, while private universities and design schools can charge ₹5 lakh to ₹15 lakh or more for the full course. Diplomas and certificate courses range from a few thousand rupees to about ₹1.5 lakh. Software licences, a laptop that can run 3D tools, model making material and site visits add to the cost.
Interior design course online: does it work
Online interior design courses are good for learning software, home styling and basic planning. Free online interior design courses from universities and public learning platforms can help you decide if you like the subject. But clients and firms trust people who have done real site work. If you take an interior design course online, pair it with a local internship with a contractor or designer so you learn measurements, materials and how a site runs. Short term interior design courses are also popular with people who already work in furniture, tiles, paints or modular kitchens.
Interior designer salary in India
Pay depends on city, type of firm, your portfolio and whether you can handle a site on your own. Rough interior designer salary per month ranges:
| Stage | Typical monthly pay |
|---|---|
| Fresher or trainee in a small studio | about ₹10,000 to ₹25,000 |
| Fresher with a degree in a larger firm in a metro | about ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 |
| 5 to 8 years, project or senior designer | about ₹50,000 to ₹1.2 lakh or more |
| Own practice | project-based design fees, which can be much higher but are not steady |
The salary of an interior designer in India also depends on sales skill. Many designers who start their own practice earn through a design fee plus execution margin, so income rises fast when referrals come in. For other well paid paths, see highest paying jobs in India.
Interior design jobs and where designers work
- Interior design and architecture firms
- Modular kitchen, furniture and home decor companies
- Real estate developers and show flat teams
- Retail store planning and exhibition design
- Hotel and office fit-out contractors
- Set design for films, TV and events
- Government public works and tourism projects through contractors
- Freelance and own studio
A job for interior designer fresher is usually a junior designer, design trainee, CAD drafter, 3D visualiser or site supervisor post. Your first year is mostly drawings and site visits. That is where you learn the most.
Is interior design a good career in India
Yes, for the right person. Housing, offices, shops and hotels keep getting built and renovated, and many owners now hire designers even for small flats. The interior design career rewards people who are creative, good with numbers and comfortable talking to clients and workers.
The downsides are real too: low pay in the first year or two, long site hours, clients who change their mind, and payments that sometimes come late if you work on your own. If you mainly want to draw and not deal with sites, consider graphic design or fashion design instead.
