What an Indian Army job means

An Indian Army job is not an office job. You train hard, live with your unit, move to a new place every two to three years and may serve in deserts, mountains or border posts. In return you get respect, a steady government salary, free rations in many postings, medical care for the family, canteen facilities and a strong sense of purpose.

There are two big groups of people in the Army:

  • Soldiers (other ranks): they now join through the Agnipath scheme as Agniveers. After four years, up to 25% of each batch can be selected for the regular cadre.
  • Officers: they join through NDA after 12th, CDS or other entries after graduation, or the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme. They lead soldiers and rise through ranks from Lieutenant to General.

If you are still choosing between the three services, compare this page with our guides to jobs in the Navy and jobs in the Air Force.

Who conducts the Army exam and which entries exist

Agniveer recruitment is run by the Army's Directorate General of Recruiting through Army Recruiting Offices. It has an online common entrance exam, followed by a recruitment rally with physical tests and a medical exam. Officer entries are different. NDA and CDS written exams are conducted by UPSC, and then candidates face a five-day SSB interview and medical tests. For the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme, candidates are shortlisted using JEE Main marks and then called for SSB.

Eligibility and age limit for Army jobs

For Agniveer, the age limit is 17½ to 21 years, counted on the date given in the notification. Recruitment is open to all of India and all classes. You must also meet the medical and physical standards for your category. For the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme, you must be 16½ to 19½ years old on the first day of the month the course starts. Only the date of birth on your 10th certificate is accepted.

Officer cadets must stay unmarried until training is complete. Age rules for CDS and other graduate entries differ by academy, so check the latest UPSC or Army notification. You can use the tool below to check your age on any cut-off date.

For a wider view of age rules across sarkari jobs, see age limit for govt jobs.

Agniveer salary per month in the Army

Agniveers get a fixed package, not a pay level. From each month's package, 30% goes into the Agniveer Corpus Fund, and the government adds an equal amount. The table shows the army salary per month for each year of the four year term.

YearMonthly packageIn-hand (70%)To corpus (30%)
1st year₹30,000₹21,000₹9,000
2nd year₹33,000₹23,100₹9,900
3rd year₹36,500₹25,580₹10,950
4th year₹40,000₹28,000₹12,000

Risk and hardship allowances are paid on top where they apply. At the end of four years, an Agniveer gets the Seva Nidhi package of about ₹10.04 lakh from the corpus, plus interest. It is free of income tax. There is no pension or gratuity for the four year term. During service there is a non-contributory life insurance cover of ₹48 lakh. Up to 25% of each batch can be selected for the regular cadre, based on performance, and they serve for another 15 years.

So the army ki salary for a new soldier is ₹21,000 in hand in the first year, plus free food and housing in most postings. This is why many families say the real value is higher than the cash figure.

Indian Army salary by rank for officers

Officers are paid on the defence pay matrix. The table below gives the indian army ranks and salary range from the official Army entry notification. Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 per month is added from Lieutenant to Brigadier.

RankPay levelBasic pay range (per month)
LieutenantLevel 10₹56,100 to ₹1,77,500
CaptainLevel 10B₹61,300 to ₹1,93,900
MajorLevel 11₹69,400 to ₹2,07,200
Lieutenant ColonelLevel 12A₹1,21,200 to ₹2,12,400
ColonelLevel 13₹1,30,600 to ₹2,15,900
BrigadierLevel 13A₹1,39,600 to ₹2,17,600
Major GeneralLevel 14₹1,44,200 to ₹2,18,200
Lieutenant General (HAG)Level 15₹1,82,200 to ₹2,24,100
Army Commander / VCOASLevel 17₹2,25,000 (fixed)
Chief of the Army StaffLevel 18₹2,50,000 (fixed)

So the lieutenant salary, or the salary of a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, starts at a basic of ₹56,100. The salary of a Major in the Indian Army starts at ₹69,400 basic, a Lieutenant Colonel at ₹1,21,200 and a Colonel at ₹1,30,600. On top of basic and MSP, officers get Dearness Allowance at the same rate as civilian employees. The salary summary box shown above the article gives a Level 10 estimate with DA, HRA and deductions; add MSP of ₹15,500 to it for a Lieutenant.

Allowances that raise the army officer salary

  • Field area allowances: ₹16,900, ₹10,500 or ₹6,300 a month depending on the area type.
  • High altitude allowance: up to ₹25,000 a month in the highest category.
  • Siachen allowance: ₹42,500 a month.
  • Flying allowance: ₹25,000 a month for Army Aviation pilots.
  • Dress allowance: ₹20,000 a year.
  • Transport allowance: ₹7,200 plus DA in bigger cities and ₹3,600 plus DA elsewhere, for Level 9 and above.
  • Children education allowance: ₹2,250 a month per child, and hostel subsidy of ₹6,750 a month per child, for two children.

Because posting decides many of these allowances, two Captains with the same basic pay can take home very different amounts. To understand DA, HRA and other parts in simple words, read salary allowances explained.

Soldier ranks, clerk, GD and para commando salary

After joining the regular cadre, a soldier moves up the ranks: Sepoy, Lance Naik, Naik, Havildar, then the Junior Commissioned Officer ranks of Naib Subedar, Subedar and Subedar Major. Each step means a higher pay level and more responsibility. The exact pay level for each rank is listed in the official pay tables on the Army's recruitment website, so check there before you trust a number you see shared online.

The army clerk salary and army GD salary are the same in the Agniveer years: both get the package in the table above. The difference comes later, through trade, rank and allowances. Para commando salary and para SF commando salary also start from the normal rank pay. Para soldiers and officers are volunteers who pass a tough probation. They receive extra allowances linked to their special role and postings, but the base is still the pay for their rank.

Some people search for merchant navy captain salary or ship captain salary along with Army pay. That is a separate, private sector career at sea. If it interests you, read our merchant navy guide.

Selection process and training

  1. Agniveer: online common entrance exam, then the recruitment rally with physical fitness tests and physical measurement, then document checks and a medical exam. A final merit list is made.
  2. NDA and CDS: UPSC written exam, a five-day SSB interview in two stages, then a medical board and the final merit list.
  3. 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme: shortlisting by JEE Main marks, SSB interview at a selection centre, medical exam, and merit based on JEE Main and SSB marks.

Training is long and paid. Under the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme, training lasts four years: three years of military and engineering training, then one year at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. Cadets get an engineering degree and a stipend of ₹56,100 a month in the final phase. NDA cadets also get the same stipend in their last phase of training. Agniveers do basic military training, then trade training, before joining their units.

Promotions and career growth

Officers move from Lieutenant to Captain and then Major on a time-scale basis, as long as they meet the required standards. Higher ranks like Colonel and above are by selection, where your reports, courses and record count. Soldiers in the regular cadre are promoted on service, courses and vacancies. After retirement, many soldiers and officers get second careers in PSU jobs, security and other government posts, where ex-servicemen often have reserved seats.

How to prepare for an Army job

  • Fitness first: start running daily at least six months before the rally or SSB. Add pull-ups, push-ups and long jumps.
  • Written exam: for Agniveer, revise 10th and 12th level maths, science, general knowledge and reasoning. Most students need three to six months of regular study.
  • SSB: for officer entries, practise speaking clearly, group discussion and simple psychology tests. Read newspapers daily.
  • Medical: get your eyes, teeth and ears checked early, and fix small issues like wax in the ear before the medical.
  • Documents: keep your 10th certificate, domicile, caste and NCC certificates ready.

Only apply through the official website, and never pay anyone who promises selection. For other uniform careers after 12th, see govt jobs after 12th and NSG commando.
