Polytechnic courses are 3 year diploma programmes in engineering and technology that you can join right after class 10. They sit between an ITI trade and a B.Tech degree: more theory than ITI, more practical work than a degree, and a lot cheaper than both in a government college. This guide covers what polytechnic courses are, the branches on offer, eligibility, the polytechnic entrance exam, fees, salary and what to study next.
A quick word on names. People say "diploma course" for almost anything, from a 3 month computer course to a postgraduate diploma in management. So what is diploma course on this page? It means the engineering diploma awarded by your state board of technical education, from an institute approved by AICTE. That is the diploma government Junior Engineer posts ask for.
What is polytechnic course
A polytechnic is a college that teaches engineering at diploma level. The course runs for 6 semesters over 3 years. You attend lectures, labs and workshops, do an industrial training in a factory or site, and finish with a small project. The state board sets the syllabus and conducts the semester exams, and AICTE approves the institute and its intake.
Some institutes also run part time diplomas for working people, and a few offer 4 year sandwich diplomas where you spend a block of time in industry. Check the course page of the institute for the exact pattern.
Polytechnic courses list: engineering diploma courses by branch

The full diploma courses list differs by state. Your state technical education board publishes the list of branches and colleges every year at admission time.
Computer diploma courses
Among computer diploma courses, the 3 year diploma in computer engineering or IT from a polytechnic carries the most weight, because it is a recognised technical qualification and lets you move to B.Tech by lateral entry. Short computer diplomas from private institutes are useful for skills, but they do not count as an engineering diploma. See computer courses for shorter options.
Non-engineering diploma courses
Some government polytechnics also run diploma courses in fashion designing, interior design, commercial practice, library science, pharmacy, and hotel management and catering. Entry rules differ. Diploma in pharmacy, for example, needs class 12 science, not class 10. If you are searching for diploma courses in fashion designing or interior design diploma courses, check that the institute is government run or approved by the right body, and read our fashion designer and interior designer pages first.
Polytechnic course duration and eligibility
| Entry route | Who can apply | Polytechnic course duration |
|---|---|---|
| Regular entry | Class 10 pass, usually with maths and science; minimum marks set by the state | 3 years (6 semesters) |
| Lateral entry into second year | Class 12 with physics, chemistry and maths, or a 2 year ITI, in states that allow it | 2 years |
| Part time diploma | Working candidates as per the board's rules | Usually longer than the regular course |
There is usually no strict upper age limit for diploma admission, but each state sets its own rules. Read the admission brochure for minimum marks and reservation.
Polytechnic entrance exam and admission
Admission happens once a year, a few weeks after class 10 results. States follow one of two methods:
- Entrance test: many states hold a polytechnic exam, such as JEECUP in Uttar Pradesh, POLYCET in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and DCECE in Bihar. You get a rank and then attend online counselling.
- Merit on class 10 marks: several states, including Gujarat, admit students directly on class 10 marks through a state admission committee.
The polytechnic entrance exam syllabus is usually class 9 and 10 level maths and science, with some states adding English or general knowledge. It is objective type. Two to three months of steady revision of your class 10 books and old papers is enough for most students. Exam dates, forms and syllabus change, so follow only your state board's official website.
Diploma course fees: government vs private polytechnic
| College type | Fee level for the course | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Government polytechnic | Low, often a few thousand rupees a year | Best value; admission needs good rank or marks |
| Government aided polytechnic | Moderate | Fees lower than private due to state support |
| Private polytechnic | High, often several times the government fee per year | Check AICTE approval, labs and past placements |
Government colleges cost much less than private ones. Add hostel and books to your budget. Post matric scholarships for SC, ST, OBC, minority and economically weaker students can cover a large part of the fee, so apply on time.
Best diploma courses for jobs
For most students the best diploma courses are Electrical, Civil and Mechanical, because government departments and railways recruit Junior Engineers in these branches every few years. Computer Engineering is a strong choice if you enjoy coding and will keep learning after college. Electronics suits students who like circuits and instruments.
Pick a branch you can study for 3 years without losing interest. In a diploma, practical skill and marks decide your first job more than the branch name. Online diploma courses that promise an "engineering diploma" in a few months are not valid for government jobs; avoid them.
Polytechnic jobs and salary
Polytechnic jobs come in three forms.
- Government: Junior Engineer through SSC JE and RRB JE starts at Level 6, basic pay ₹35,400. State JE posts follow the state scale. Railways also accept diploma holders for some Assistant Loco Pilot posts. The diploma jobs page lists more.
- Private: supervisor, maintenance technician, CAD draughtsman, site engineer, quality inspector, IT support. Polytechnic salary in private jobs often starts around ₹12,000 to ₹22,000 a month and can reach ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 after 5 to 8 years. Branch, city, employer size and your skills drive the gap.
- Apprenticeship: diploma holders can take a one year technician apprenticeship with a stipend in PSUs and large plants.
Polytechnic lecturer jobs are a different route. AICTE norms generally ask for a B.E. or B.Tech, often with first class, for lecturers in engineering branches. State public service commissions fill government lecturer posts, so a diploma alone is not enough.
After diploma courses: higher study options
- B.Tech by lateral entry: join the second year of B.Tech. AICTE norms ask for at least 45% in the diploma (40% for reserved categories). See B.Tech courses.
- Work and study: many JEs and private engineers finish a part time B.Tech later, where approved.
- Short skill certificates: AutoCAD, PLC, estimation, networking or quality systems help in private jobs.
- PG diploma courses: these are for graduates, not diploma holders. Once you finish a degree, a PG diploma in management, HR or a technical field becomes an option. Read courses after graduation.
Still choosing between ITI and polytechnic? An ITI course is shorter and more hands-on, while a polytechnic diploma opens Junior Engineer posts and B.Tech. The diploma courses after 10th page compares both.
