If you are searching for jobs after BCom, you have more choices than most people think. A commerce degree opens doors in banks, insurance, central government offices, accounts teams, tax work and finance. Some of these jobs need only your degree and one competitive exam. Others pay much more but need a professional course like CA, CS or CMA on top of BCom. This page puts every main route in one place, with eligibility, how you get in and what you can expect to earn, so you can choose with a clear head.
Jobs after BCom: the four main routes
Job opportunities after BCom fall into four groups, and after counselling many commerce students, I see each student fit one of them best. Pick the group that fits your marks, money situation and patience.
- Sarkari jobs through exams: SSC, bank, insurance, railway and UPSC exams. Any BCom graduate can sit for most of them. Preparation usually takes 8 to 18 months of steady study.
- Professional courses: CA, CS, CMA, ACCA or CFA. These take 2 to 5 years more, but the pay ceiling is high.
- Private jobs for BCom freshers: accounts, audit assistant, tax, banking operations, insurance, payroll, sales. You can start in a few weeks.
- Further study: MBA, MCom, LLB or B.Ed, which lead to management, law or teaching.
Many students mix routes. For example, they take a job in a CA firm while preparing for bank exams in the evening. That is a sensible plan if you have the energy for it.
Government jobs after BCom and salary
Commerce graduates do well in government exams because the maths and finance parts feel familiar. The table below lists the exams that BCom students ask me about most. Pay figures are starting basic pay, not in-hand salary.
| Job or exam | Who can apply | How you get in | Starting pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| SSC CGL: Assistant Audit Officer, Assistant Accounts Officer | Any bachelor's degree, age 18 to 30 | Tier 1 and Tier 2 computer tests, with an extra Finance and Economics paper for these posts | Level 8, basic ₹47,600 |
| SSC CGL: Auditor, Accountant, Junior Accountant | Any bachelor's degree, age 18 to 27 | Same CGL tiers | Level 5, basic ₹29,200 |
| SSC CGL: Inspector (Income Tax, Central Excise, Preventive Officer, Examiner), Assistant Section Officer | Any bachelor's degree, age mostly 18 to 30 | Same CGL tiers; some posts have extra standards listed in the notice | Level 7, basic ₹44,900 |
| SBI PO | Graduate in any discipline, age 21 to 30 | Prelims, mains, then psychometric test, group exercise and interview | Basic ₹48,480 plus four advance increments |
| IBPS PO and IBPS Clerk | Graduates; check the notification for age | Prelims and mains; interview for PO only | Bank scale set by the wage settlement |
| LIC AAO (Generalist) | Bachelor's degree in any discipline, age 21 to 30 | Prelims, mains, interview and medical test | Basic ₹88,635 in the latest notification |

| RBI Grade B and RBI Assistant | Graduates; marks and age rules are in each notice | Phase-wise exams and interview for Grade B | RBI's own scale |
| UPSC Civil Services | Graduate, age 21 to 32 for general category, six attempts | Prelims, mains and personality test | Level 10, basic ₹56,100 for IAS |
For central government posts, your in-hand salary is basic pay plus DA, HRA (which depends on whether your city is class X, Y or Z) and transport allowance, minus NPS and tax. You can work out the monthly figure with our 7th CPC salary calculator. The full list of graduate-level exams is on our government exams list.
A quick tip: the Assistant Audit Officer post in CGL lists CA, CMA, CS and MCom as desirable qualifications. So if you are also studying for CA Intermediate, you are building towards both paths at once.
Professional courses that raise your BCom career ceiling
A plain BCom gives you entry. A professional qualification gives you speed. These are the options with a real return.
| Course | Entry for a BCom graduate | Time needed | Where it leads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chartered Accountant (CA) | Direct entry to Intermediate with 55% in BCom; Foundation is skipped | Intermediate, 2 years of practical training, then Final | Audit, tax, financial reporting, own practice |
| Company Secretary (CS) | Graduates are exempt from CSEET and can register straight for Executive | Executive, Professional and training | Company law, compliance, board work |
| Cost and Management Accountant (CMA) | Graduates can usually join at Intermediate; check the institute's current rules | Intermediate, Final and training | Costing, budgeting, plant finance, PSU finance roles |
| ACCA or CFA | Open to graduates; exemptions and timing rules are on each body's official site | 2 to 4 years, depending on pace | Global accounting teams, investment research |
| MBA | Graduation plus an entrance like CAT | 2 years | Finance, marketing, HR and operations management |
Do not start three courses together. Choose one, give it full effort, and keep a job or exam plan in the background.
Private jobs for BCom freshers
If you need to earn quickly, these roles hire fresh commerce graduates in every city. Your first employer may be a small CA firm, a trading business, a factory accounts office, a bank branch on contract, or an outsourcing unit.

Jobs in a CA firm for BCom fresher candidates are one of the best learning starts. The pay is modest, but in one year you see how many businesses keep their books. That knowledge stays with you.
After BCom jobs and salary: what you can really expect
Parents often ask me for one number. There is no single number, because the BCom graduate salary depends on the employer, the city and your skills. Here are honest broad ranges.
- Private fresher jobs: most freshers start somewhere around ₹12,000 to ₹30,000 per month. Metro cities and larger firms pay at the top. Small towns and small firms pay at the lower end.
- After 5 to 8 years in private jobs: people who build skills in accounts, tax or finance often reach ₹40,000 to ₹1 lakh per month. People who stay in plain data entry stay low.
- Qualified CA, CS or CMA: pay jumps sharply after qualifying, and grows faster with experience in audit, tax or corporate finance.
- Government jobs: fixed pay levels with yearly increments, DA increases and pension benefits under NPS. A Level 5 post starts at ₹29,200 basic and a Level 8 post at ₹47,600 basic. SBI PO starts at ₹48,480 basic plus increments, and LIC AAO at ₹88,635 basic as per the latest notice.

Career options after BCom Hons, law and teaching
BCom Hons students have the same options as BCom pass students, but the deeper accounts and economics papers help in CA, CMA and the CGL finance paper. A few other paths are worth knowing:
- Career in law after BCom: a three-year LLB after graduation leads to corporate law, tax law and compliance work. Commerce plus law is a strong mix for tax practice. Read more on our lawyer career page.
- Teaching: a B.Ed plus the CTET or state TET lets you teach commerce and accountancy in schools. MCom plus UGC NET opens college teaching.
- Banking and finance roles: with an MBA in finance or a CFA level or two, you can move into credit, treasury and investment work.
Best career options after BCom: how to choose
When you compare BCom career options side by side, use these four questions. Answer them honestly with your family.
- Do you need income in the next six months? Then take a private job and prepare for bank or SSC exams alongside.
- Did you score 55% or more and enjoy accounts? CA direct entry is worth a serious look.
- Do you want job security above everything? Focus on one exam family: SSC, banks or insurance. Do not jump between all of them.
- Do you like people, selling and planning more than numbers? An MBA or a move from BCom into marketing or HR may suit you; see jobs after BBA for those roles.

Your first steps as a BCom fresher
Whatever you choose, these steps help every commerce student:
- Learn one accounting software and spreadsheets well. Many interviews include a short practical test.
- Do one GST and income tax return filing practice from start to end.
- Write a simple career objective for your resume. For a BCom fresher, something like: "Commerce graduate seeking an accounts role where I can apply GST and reconciliation skills and grow towards finance." Keep it to two lines.
- Set a fixed daily study slot if you are preparing for exams. Two focused hours every day beat eight hours once a week.
- Check vacancy notices only on official websites like ssc.gov.in, the SBI careers page, ibps.in and licindia.in.
