Railway Jobs: All RRB Exams, Eligibility and Salary

Quick answerRailway jobs are filled mainly through RRB exams for 10th, ITI, 12th, diploma and graduate candidates. Starting basic pay ranges from ₹18,000 (Level 1) to ₹35,400 (Level 6) for posts like JE and Station Master.

Railway jobs are among the most popular choices for students in India. Indian Railways hires 10th pass, ITI, 12th pass, diploma and graduate candidates every year through the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs). Pay starts at ₹18,000 basic for Level 1 posts and goes up to ₹35,400 or more for Level 6 posts like Junior Engineer and Station Master. This guide groups every main option by qualification so you can see where you fit.

How railway jobs are filled: RRB, RRC and UPSC

Most indian railway jobs are filled through three routes:

  • Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs): 21 boards under the Ministry of Railways. They run the big RRB exam for each post group through a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN). You apply to one RRB and compete for its vacancies.
  • Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs): in each zone. They handle Act Apprentice selection and some other posts.
  • UPSC: Group A officer posts in railways are filled through UPSC exams, mainly the Civil Services and Engineering Services routes.

When people say they are preparing for the railway exam, they usually mean one of the RRB exams below. Each has its own notice, syllabus and pattern, and together they make up most rrb jobs. All 21 RRBs publish the same notice on their official websites, and the RRBs warn every time that no agent or tout can get you selected.

Railway jobs after 10th and ITI

JobEligibilityHow you get inStarting basic
RRB Group D (Level 1 posts)10th pass or ITI, as per notice; latest age band 18 to 33CBT, PET, documents, medical₹18,000 (Level 1)
Technician Grade III10th plus ITI or Act Apprenticeship; age 18 to 30CBT, documents, medical₹19,900 (Level 2)
Assistant Loco Pilot10th plus ITI, or engineering diploma or degree; age 18 to 30Two CBTs, aptitude test, documents, medical₹19,900 (Level 2)
RPF Constable10th pass; age rules set by the RPF RulesWritten test, physical tests, documents, medical₹21,700 (Level 3)
Act Apprentice10th plus ITI in the tradeMerit list by the zonal RRC, no written exam in most casesStipend as per apprenticeship rules

Apprenticeship is training, not a permanent job. But a completed Act Apprenticeship counts as a qualification for Technician and Group D posts and gives some age relaxation. The railway apprentice salary is a fixed stipend set under the apprenticeship rules, which is lower than a regular salary. See ITI jobs and government jobs after 10th for more options.

Railway jobs after 12th: NTPC undergraduate posts

For 12th pass students, the main door is RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) at the undergraduate level. These are clerical and ticketing posts.

PostPay levelStarting basic
Commercial cum Ticket ClerkLevel 3₹21,700
Accounts Clerk cum TypistLevel 2₹19,900
Junior Clerk cum TypistLevel 2₹19,900
Trains ClerkLevel 2₹19,900

Typist posts need a typing skill test after the CBT. Recent undergraduate NTPC notices used an age band of 18 to 30 years. Many students ask about the TT salary in railway. Ticket checking staff usually come up through commercial posts like Commercial cum Ticket Clerk, so the starting pay is Level 3 and rises with promotion. Read government jobs after 12th for non-railway options too.

Railway jobs after graduation and diploma

JobEligibilityHow you get inStarting basic
Station MasterAny graduateNTPC graduate CBTs, aptitude test, documents, medical₹35,400 (Level 6)
Chief Commercial cum Ticket SupervisorAny graduateNTPC graduate CBTs₹35,400 (Level 6)
Goods Train Manager (earlier called guard)Any graduateNTPC graduate CBTs₹29,200 (Level 5)
Junior Accounts Assistant cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum TypistAny graduateNTPC graduate CBTs, typing test₹29,200 (Level 5)
Junior Engineer, DMS, CMAEngineering diploma or degree; B.Sc for CMA; age 18 to 33CBT 1, CBT 2, documents, medical₹35,400 (Level 6)

RPF Sub-InspectorGraduationWritten test, physical tests, documents, medical₹35,400 (Level 6)

So the railway guard salary, now under the name Goods Train Manager, starts at Level 5. The junior engineer salary in railway starts at Level 6. Recent graduate NTPC notices used an age band of 18 to 33 years. Graduates should also see jobs after graduation, and diploma holders diploma jobs.

Paramedical, ministerial and other railway posts

RRBs also run smaller notices for special skills. Each has its own qualification and age band.

  • Paramedical posts: Nursing Superintendent, Pharmacist, Lab Assistant, Radiographer, ECG Technician and others for railway hospitals. Pharmacist posts need a pharmacy diploma or degree with registration. The rrb pharmacist salary is at Level 5 for the entry grade, and nursing posts start higher. See pharmacy courses and nursing officer jobs.
  • Ministerial and isolated posts: such as Junior Translator (Hindi), Staff and Welfare Inspector, Senior Publicity Inspector (all Level 6), Chief Law Assistant and Public Prosecutor (Level 7), and Lab Assistant Grade III (Level 2). The latest notice set age bands from 18 to 30 up to 18 to 40 years depending on the post.
  • Group A officers: through UPSC Civil Services and Engineering Services. Group A pay starts at Level 10 (₹56,100).

Railway salary: Group C, Group B and Group A pay compared

All railway posts follow the 7th CPC pay matrix. Here is how the groups compare:

GroupTypical postsPay levelsStarting basic range
Level 1 (earlier Group D)Track Maintainer, Assistant (various departments), PointsmanLevel 1₹18,000
Group CClerks, technicians, ALP, Station Master, JE, Senior Section EngineerLevel 2 to Level 7₹19,900 to ₹44,900
Group BAssistant officers through departmental promotionLevel 8 and above₹47,600 and above
Group AOfficers through UPSCLevel 10 and above₹56,100 and above

So the railway group C salary covers a wide range. A Senior Section Engineer (SSE), for example, is at Level 7, so the SSE railway salary starts at ₹44,900 basic. Railway Group B salary begins at Level 8 and Group A at Level 10. Senior officers rise to much higher levels with long service.

The railway salary per month is basic plus DA (revised twice a year), HRA by city class, and transport allowance, minus pension (NPS) and tax. Railway staff also get free passes, railway hospital care and quarters in many places. To see what a basic pay turns into each month, use the calculator below, and read salary allowances explained.

Some banks, including SBI, offer a railway salary package account for railway employees with extra benefits. Compare the terms at the bank branch before you open one.

Railway exam pattern and railway exam syllabus

Every railway exam is computer based (CBT), with one third of a mark cut for each wrong answer. The rrb exam syllabus is broadly similar across posts:

  • Mathematics: number system, percentages, ratio, time and work, speed, mensuration, simple and compound interest.
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: series, coding, analogies, puzzles, directions, Venn diagrams.
  • General Awareness and current affairs.
  • General Science: 10th level physics, chemistry and biology (for technical and Level 1 posts).
  • Technical subjects: only for JE, ALP and technician-type posts.

What changes is the number of stages. The railway recruitment board exam pattern for NTPC has two CBTs plus a typing test or aptitude test. Group D has one CBT and a PET. JE has two CBTs. ALP has two CBTs and a computer based aptitude test. The exam is given in English, Hindi and many regional languages, so you can practise reasoning questions in Hindi for railway exam papers if that is your strongest language.

The best railway job question bank is the set of previous papers that RRBs release after each CBT, with questions and answer keys. Solve rrb exam questions and answers from these papers by topic, then take full mock tests. Most students need 4 to 8 months of steady study.

Railway jobs age limit and railway jobs for girls

The railway exam age limit is usually 18 to 30 years for 10th, ITI and 12th level posts, and 18 to 33 years for graduate and engineering posts, as per recent notices. Some special posts allow up to 40. Category relaxation in RRB notices:

  • Backward classes: OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates get three extra years and SC or ST candidates get five.
  • Ex-servicemen and PwBD: higher relaxation by category.
  • Women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated get a higher upper limit, which differs by category.
  • Serving railway staff: higher limits as per the notice.

Railway jobs for girls are open in every RRB category. Women pay a lower application fee (₹250, refunded after sitting the CBT, in recent notices). Many women work as clerks, Station Masters, JEs, nurses and loco pilots. See government jobs for women for more.

How to get a job on the railway: step by step

  1. Find your level: 10th, ITI, 12th, diploma or graduate. Pick posts from the tables above.
  2. Check the age limit and medical standard for each post. Some posts, like ALP, need very good eyesight.
  3. Wait for the CEN on the official RRB websites. Short indicative notices usually come out first.
  4. Apply to one RRB only, with correct photo, signature and category certificates.
  5. Prepare for the CBT with previous papers. For Group D and RPF, start physical practice early.
  6. Clear the CBT, then document verification and medical. Final merit is published on the RRB websites.

A sarkari job railway aspirants get through RRB is decided on merit alone. Keep copies of all documents and never pay anyone who promises a seat. To compare railways with other sectors, see our list of government exams and SSC exams.
