Govt Job Age Limit: Exam-wise Limits and Category Relaxation

Quick answerMost central govt jobs need you to be 18 to 32 years old for General category, with the exact upper limit set by each post. SC and ST get 5 extra years, OBC 3, and PwBD 10 to 15. Age is counted on the cut-off date in the notice.

The govt job age limit for most central exams starts at 18 years and ends between 23 and 32 years for General candidates, depending on the post. SC and ST candidates get 5 extra years, OBC (non-creamy layer) get 3, and persons with benchmark disabilities get 10 or more. Every notice also fixes a cut-off date on which your age is counted. In my counselling sessions, I have seen many students miss a good exam by a few months only because they did not check this early. Use the checker below and the tables on this page to plan which exams you still have time for.

Check your government exam age limit in one step

Enter your date of birth, the cut-off date from the notification and your category. The tool shows your exact age on that date and whether the category relaxation brings you within the limit.

Always use the cut-off date given in the notice. It is not the date you apply and not the exam day. Each exam prints its own cut-off date, and it can differ between UPSC, SSC, banks and railways.

Govt job age limit by exam: central government

These are the normal limits for General (UR) candidates, taken from recent official notices. Limits can change in a new notice, so confirm before you apply.

Age relaxation for SC, ST, OBC and other categories

The central government allows these extra years on the upper limit for direct recruitment. The figures below are from DoPT orders and the SSC CGL notice.

CategoryExtra years on upper ageExample: limit of 27 becomes
SC and ST5 years32
OBC (non-creamy layer)3 years30
EWSNo relaxation in central rules27
PwBD (General)10 years37
PwBD (OBC)13 years40
PwBD (SC and ST)15 years42
Ex-servicemen (SSC exams)3 years after subtracting military serviceDepends on service

For persons with disabilities, DoPT rules also say the age on the cut-off date must not cross 56 years, and the disability must be at least 40 percent. Some notices, like UPSC Civil Services, give ex-servicemen up to 5 years under set conditions, so read the relaxation table in each notice.

SC/ST age limit for govt jobs

For SC and ST candidates, add 5 years to the General upper limit. So the SC/ST age limit for govt jobs works out to 28 years for SSC GD, 32 for SSC CGL Level 4 and 5 posts, 35 for most CGL Level 6 to 8 posts, and 37 for UPSC Civil Services. In UPSC Civil Services, SC and ST candidates also have no cap on the number of attempts, as long as they are within the age limit. OBC candidates get 9 attempts and General and EWS candidates get 6.

Govt jobs age limit for general category

For General category candidates there is no relaxation, so the printed limit is final. In central exams the government jobs age limit for general candidates usually ends at:

  • 23 years: constable level posts like SSC GD.
  • 27 years: clerk and assistant level graduate posts in SSC.
  • 30 years: bank PO, SSC CGL inspector level posts, UPSC ESE.
  • 32 years: UPSC Civil Services.

If you are a General candidate in your late twenties, focus on exams that still allow you two or three more attempts. Many state commissions allow a few more years than central exams.

Government jobs age limit 40 and 45: who qualifies

People in their late thirties often ask me about govt jobs with age limit 40 or a govt job age limit of 45. Here are the real cases:

  • India Post GDS: General candidates up to 40 years, with more for reserved categories.
  • Central government employees: in SSC exams for Group C posts, civilian employees with at least 3 years of continuous service can apply up to 40 years, and up to 45 if SC or ST.
  • Widows and divorced women: not remarried, up to 35 years for SSC Group C posts, and up to 40 if SC or ST.
  • PwBD candidates: with 10 to 15 years of relaxation, many limits reach 40 or above.
  • Experienced specialist posts: UPSC and other bodies hire doctors, engineers and other experts by interview, often with higher age limits that depend on the post.
  • State jobs: some states allow up to 40 years or more for General candidates in certain posts. Check your state notice.

So "government jobs age limit 45 years for general" candidates is rare in central exams. It mostly applies to departmental candidates, specialists and some state posts.

Government jobs with no age limit

For a regular direct recruitment post, there is always an upper age limit. What you will find are posts with a very high limit, or rules that remove the cap on attempts. Your real options at an older age are departmental exams if you are already in service, specialist posts by interview, contract posts, and teaching or research jobs where experience counts. Check eligibility for assistant professor and government teacher posts in your state.

Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana and other state limits

Each state sets its own age rules through its public service commission and staff selection board. The Odisha govt job age limit, the age limit for government jobs in Karnataka, and the limits in Telangana and Jammu and Kashmir are all decided by those governments and are often a few years higher than central exams. Some states also give relaxation to women, local residents or state employees.

To check a state limit, open the latest notice on that state's PSC website and read the "age limit" and "age relaxation" sections. For state civil services, see state PCS, and for police jobs, see police constable.

How age is counted and common mistakes

  • The date of birth on your 10th certificate is final. Commissions do not accept a change made later.
  • Age is counted on the cut-off date, not on the exam day.
  • Relaxations usually cannot be combined freely. The notice says which ones add up, for example PwBD with SC, ST or OBC.
  • You need a valid certificate. OBC candidates need a non-creamy layer certificate in the central format for central jobs.
  • Minimum age matters too. If you are under 18 or 21 on the cut-off date, you cannot apply that cycle.

Once you know which exams you can still take, see the government exams list, or the highest paying govt jobs to aim high while you have time.
