Psychology courses suit students who are curious about why people think, feel and behave the way they do. You can start right after class 12 with a BA or BSc in psychology, from any stream in most colleges. The degree alone opens only a few doors. The real career begins after a master's, and for clinical work, after a professional course recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). This page explains each step, the pay you can expect and where psychologists actually work.
Psychology career options: what a psychologist does all day
Psychology is not mind reading. It is a science of behaviour, and the work depends on your branch.
- Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental health conditions like anxiety, depression and learning difficulties. They give psychological tests and run therapy sessions, often alongside psychiatrists in hospitals.
- Counselling psychologists help people handle stress, relationships, career confusion and exam pressure. Schools, colleges and NGOs hire them.
- Child psychologists work with children who struggle with attention, behaviour or learning, and guide their parents.
- Organisational psychologists work in HR teams on hiring tests, training and employee wellbeing.
- Forensic and criminal psychologists support police, courts and prisons with assessments of offenders and victims.
- Sports psychologists help athletes with focus and pressure.
A lot of the job is listening, writing reports and keeping careful notes. If you enjoy people but also like reading research, you will fit in.
Psychology courses after 12th: the full route
Here is how the ladder usually looks. Most colleges accept arts, science and commerce students for the bachelor's degree, though some ask for a minimum percentage.
| Stage | Course | Duration | What it lets you do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor's | BA Psychology or BSc Psychology (Honours in many universities) | 3 years (4 with the honours or research year under the new pattern) | Assistant roles, HR support, further study |
| Master's | MA or MSc in Psychology, Applied, Counselling, Clinical, Organisational or Forensic Psychology | 2 years | Counsellor, school counsellor, HR, research assistant |
| Professional clinical course | RCI-recognised MPhil in Clinical Psychology or the newer RCI professional master's in clinical psychology | 2 years | Registration with RCI as a clinical psychologist |
| Doctorate | PhD in Psychology | 3 to 5 years | College teaching, research posts |
The clinical route is changing as universities move away from the MPhil under the new education policy, so check the current list of approved courses and institutes on rci.gov.in before you pick a college. Without RCI registration you cannot call yourself a clinical psychologist.
BA psychology suits arts students. BSc psychology often adds more statistics and lab work. Both lead to the same master's degrees. If you are still unsure of your stream, see courses after 12th arts and courses after 12th science.
Psychology entrance exam and admission
There is no single national psychological exam for admission. Central universities and many state and private universities take BA and BSc psychology students through CUET UG. Some private universities hold their own psychology entrance exam or admit on class 12 marks. For the master's, CUET PG and university tests are common. RCI clinical courses usually have their own entrance test and interview at each institute, and seats are few.
If you were searching for personality psychology exam questions, those come up inside your BA and MA papers, not at admission. Expect topics like theories of personality, research methods, statistics, biological psychology and abnormal psychology.
Clinical, counselling and child psychology courses compared
| Specialisation | Study after 12th | Licence needed | Typical workplace |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clinical psychology | BA or BSc, MA or MSc, then RCI clinical course | Yes, RCI registration | Hospitals, psychiatry departments, rehab centres |
| Counselling psychology | BA or BSc, MA in counselling or applied psychology | No central licence for counsellors at present | Schools, colleges, NGOs, private practice |
| Child psychology | Master's with a child or developmental focus; clinical route for therapy | RCI for clinical child work | Child guidance clinics, schools, special education centres |
| Forensic and criminal psychology | Master's in forensic psychology | Depends on role | Forensic labs, prisons, police training, NGOs |
| Sports psychology | Master's plus sports-specific training | No | Sports academies, teams |
Clinical psychology courses are the hardest to get into because each institute takes only a small batch. Counselling psychology courses are far more widely available, including in many state universities. For forensic work in labs, read our forensic science careers page too.
Online psychology courses and short certificates
Online psychology courses and free online psychology courses are a good way to test your interest before you commit three years. A certificate course in psychology or in counselling psychology can teach you basics like listening skills and an introduction to psychology. Be clear about one thing: a short online certificate does not make you a counsellor or a psychologist. Use these courses to learn, then take a proper degree from a UGC-recognised university. Distance and online BA psychology from recognised universities is valid for many jobs, but clinical training needs supervised in-person practice.
Psychologist salary in India
Pay depends mostly on your qualification. A bachelor's degree alone pays little. A master's helps. RCI registration makes the biggest jump. The ranges below are broad and vary with city, employer and your private practice.
| Profile | Starting pay per month | After 5 to 8 years |
|---|---|---|
| BA or BSc psychology only (assistant, HR support) | ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 | Depends on moving into HR or further study |
| School or college counsellor (master's) | ₹20,000 to ₹40,000 | ₹40,000 to ₹70,000 |
| Clinical psychologist (RCI registered) | ₹30,000 to ₹60,000 | ₹70,000 to ₹1,50,000 or more with private practice |
| Organisational or HR psychologist | ₹25,000 to ₹45,000 | ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 |
| Assistant professor (NET or PhD) | UGC pay scale in government colleges; private colleges pay less | |
A clinical psychologist salary in big cities with a steady private practice can go well above these figures, but building a client base takes years. Forensic psychologist salary follows the employer: government lab and hospital posts follow pay scales, private and NGO roles pay in the counsellor range. Is psychology a good career in India
Good points: demand for mental health support is rising, the work is meaningful, women and men both do well in it, and experienced clinical psychologists can run their own practice.
Hard points: you need five to seven years of study before you earn well, clinical seats are limited, and early pay for bachelor's graduates is low. The work can be emotionally heavy.
So yes, psychology is a good career if you are ready for a master's and ideally the RCI route. If you only want a three year degree and a quick job, it may disappoint you.
How to start in class 11 and 12
- Take psychology as a subject in class 11 and 12 if your school offers it. It is not compulsory but it helps.
- Keep your class 12 marks strong and prepare for CUET UG.
- Pick a college that has a psychology lab and supervised practicals.
- During the BA or BSc, volunteer with an NGO or a hospital to see real cases.
- Decide on your master's specialisation by the second year.

Questions students ask
What is the psychology course duration after 12th?
A BA or BSc psychology takes 3 years, or 4 years if you take the honours or research year. A master's adds 2 years, and the RCI clinical course another 2 years. So a clinical psychologist usually studies 7 years after class 12.
Can a commerce or science student take BA psychology?
Yes. Most universities accept students from any stream for BA psychology. A few BSc psychology programmes prefer science students, so read the eligibility of each college before applying.
What is the BSc psychology salary for freshers?
With only a bachelor's degree, most freshers earn about ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 a month in assistant, HR or support roles. Pay rises clearly after a master's degree and RCI registration.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a doctor who has done MBBS and then MD in psychiatry, and can prescribe medicines. A psychologist studies psychology, gives tests and therapy, but does not prescribe. See our MBBS doctor page for the medical route.
Are there jobs for psychology bachelors in India?
Yes, but they are limited. HR assistant, admissions counselor, research assistant and NGO field roles hire BA psychology graduates. For counselling and clinical jobs, a master's is expected.
Which psychology entrance exam should I prepare for?
For BA or BSc psychology in central universities, prepare for CUET UG. Private universities may have their own test. For the master's, CUET PG and university tests apply, and RCI clinical courses hold their own entrance and interview.
