Investment banking is one of the best paid jobs in finance, and the investment banker salary is the reason most students first look it up. But the entry is narrow. Most bankers in India get in after a top MBA in finance, after CA, or with a strong CFA record, and the hours are long. In this guide I explain what bankers do, which courses help, how a financial analyst role can be your first step, and what pay looks like at the start and after some years.
What is the job of an investment banker
An investment banker helps companies and governments raise large amounts of money and do big deals. The investment banker job profile covers four main kinds of work:
- Raising equity: helping a company list its shares on the stock exchange (an IPO) or sell more shares later.
- Raising debt: arranging bonds and large loans.
- Mergers and acquisitions: advising when one company buys or joins another.
- Valuation and advisory: working out what a business is worth and how a deal should be set up.
As a junior analyst, your day is mostly Excel financial models, company research, presentation decks for clients and checking numbers again and again. Seniors spend more time meeting clients and negotiating. In India, merchant banking and public issue work is regulated by SEBI, so rules and disclosures are a big part of the job.
Routes after 12th into investment banking
There is no single "investment banker degree". Here are the routes that actually work.
| Step | Common choice | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| After class 12 | Commerce with maths is ideal; science with maths also works | Comfort with numbers and accounts |
| Graduation (3 to 4 years) | BCom, BBA, BA Economics, B.Tech, BMS | Builds base in finance, economics or analysis |
| Professional qualification | CA, CFA or both | Strong signal of accounting and valuation skill |
| Postgraduation | MBA or PGDM in finance from a top institute | Most front-office hiring happens through campus placement at top B-schools |
| First job | Analyst in an investment bank, or financial analyst in research, audit or corporate finance | Experience can later move you into deal teams |
For the MBA route, the main entrance exam is CAT. Preparation usually takes 6 to 12 months. Good grades in class 10, 12 and graduation also matter at the shortlist stage of top institutes.
Investment banking courses, CFA and CFP course details
Students see many investment banking courses online and short courses "with placement". A short certificate can teach Excel modelling and valuation, which is useful, but it does not replace a degree, CA, CFA or a good MBA. Do not pay large investment banking courses fees on the promise of a job. Nobody can promise one.
| Course | Who runs it | Duration (typical) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| CA (Chartered Accountant) | ICAI | About 4.5 to 5 years after 12th | Valuation, due diligence, transaction advisory |
| CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) | CFA Institute | 3 levels, often 2 to 4 years | Equity research, investment analysis, asset management |
| CFP (Certified Financial Planner) | FPSB India for the Indian certification | Several months to about 1.5 years | Personal financial planning and wealth advice, not deal work |
| NISM certifications | NISM (set up by SEBI) | A few weeks per module | Required for many roles in broking, research and investment advice |
| MBA or PGDM in finance | IIMs and other B-schools | 2 years | Campus entry into banking and corporate finance |
On costs: the financial analyst course fees and CFP course fees are paid partly as registration and partly as exam fees, and many students pay extra for coaching. CFA exam fees are charged in US dollars. Since these amounts change, check the official websites. You can read more in our ACCA and CFA courses guide.
A note on the CFP course: it trains you to plan savings, insurance, tax and retirement for individuals. It leads to CFP jobs in wealth management and advisory, and a CFP salary in India grows with the clients you handle. It is not the usual route into deal-making investment banking. Check the current CFP exam format and eligibility on the official FPSB India website.
Investment banker salary in India
Here is a realistic picture of the investment banker salary in India. Pay has two parts: fixed salary and a yearly bonus, and the bonus can be large in a good year and small in a bad one.
| Level | Experience | Rough yearly pay (fixed, before bonus) |
|---|---|---|
| Analyst | 0 to 3 years | About ₹8 lakh to ₹20 lakh; higher for top MBA hires at large global banks |
| Associate | 3 to 6 years, often post-MBA | About ₹18 lakh to ₹40 lakh |
| Vice President | 6 to 10 years | About ₹35 lakh to ₹80 lakh or more |
| Director and above | 10+ years | Well above this, heavily linked to deals closed |
So the investment banker salary per month for a new analyst is roughly ₹65,000 to ₹1.6 lakh before tax, and much higher in the best-paying firms. The average investment banker salary is hard to state because smaller advisory boutiques pay far less than large global banks. What changes investment banking salary the most: the type of firm, your institute, your city (Mumbai is the main centre) and deal flow in that year.

Financial analyst jobs and salary: a practical first step
Many students who want investment banking start as financial analysts. Financial analyst jobs for freshers exist in corporate finance teams, research firms, audit and consulting firms, banks, mutual fund houses and stock brokers. The financial analyst job description usually covers preparing reports, building budgets and forecasts, analysing company results and tracking markets.
- Financial analyst salary in India for freshers: roughly ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 a month, depending on city and employer.
- Senior financial analyst salary: often ₹8 lakh to ₹18 lakh a year after 4 to 7 years.
- Chartered financial analyst salary in India per month: a CFA charterholder with a few years of experience often earns somewhere between ₹1 lakh and ₹2.5 lakh a month in research or portfolio roles. The charter helps, but experience and the employer decide most of it.
Stock broker jobs are another entry. Dealers, relationship managers and research staff at brokers usually need NISM certification for their role. A stock broker salary for a fresher is often in the ₹15,000 to ₹35,000 a month range plus incentives. Compare this with data analyst jobs if you enjoy numbers but want regular hours.
Government and regulator jobs in finance
If you like finance but prefer a sarkari naukri, look at regulator and public sector roles. SEBI recruits Officer Grade A (Assistant Manager) through its own exam, and RBI recruits RBI Grade B officers. Public sector banks also hire finance specialists through IBPS SO and their own notices. These roles do not pay investment banking bonuses, but they offer stable pay, allowances and work-life balance. Check eligibility on sebi.gov.in and the RBI careers page.

Questions students ask
What is the salary of an investment banker in India per month?
A new analyst usually earns about ₹65,000 to ₹1.6 lakh a month in fixed pay before tax, with a yearly bonus on top. Top MBA hires at large global banks can earn more. After 6 to 10 years, pay can reach several lakh a month.
Which investment banking courses are best after 12th?
Start with a degree like BCom, BBA, BA Economics or B.Tech. Then add CA or CFA, and aim for an MBA in finance through CAT. Short online courses help with Excel and valuation skills but do not replace these.
What is the CFP course and is it useful for investment banking?
CFP stands for Certified Financial Planner. It trains you to manage savings, insurance, tax and retirement for individuals. It is useful for wealth management and advisory jobs, but it is not the usual route into deal-based investment banking.
What is the financial analyst salary in India for freshers?
Freshers usually earn about ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 a month. Pay is higher in big cities, in larger firms and for candidates with CA, CFA level clearances or a good MBA.
Can I become an investment banker without an MBA?
Yes, but it is harder. Some CAs and CFA charterholders join through transaction advisory, valuation or equity research roles and move into deal teams later. Most front-office analyst hiring still happens through top MBA campuses.
Are there government jobs similar to investment banking?
Not the same work, but SEBI Grade A, RBI Grade B and specialist officer posts in public sector banks use similar finance skills. They offer stable pay and allowances instead of large bonuses.
