NTPC stands for Non-Technical Popular Categories. It is one of the biggest sarkari job routes for students after 12th and after graduation, and lakhs of young people sit for it every cycle. In this guide I will explain each post, its pay level, who can apply, the exam pattern and what the job feels like once you join the railways.

What is the RRB NTPC exam

The RRB NTPC government recruitment exam is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) for the Ministry of Railways. There are 21 RRBs across India, such as RRB Chandigarh, RRB Secunderabad, RRB Chennai and RRB Guwahati. They publish one common notice called a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN), and you apply to one RRB of your choice.

In recent cycles, railways have split NTPC into two separate notices:

  • NTPC Graduate level: for candidates with a degree. Posts are at Level 4, 5 and 6.
  • NTPC Undergraduate level: for candidates who have passed class 12. Posts are at Level 2 and 3.

These are office, commercial and operating jobs. You will not be repairing engines or tracks. You will be selling tickets, handling accounts, running a station, managing goods trains or doing clerical work. If you want a technical railway job instead, read our pages on railway technician and RRB JE.

RRB NTPC posts and salary: pay level of each post

Here are the RRB NTPC posts and salary levels as listed in the latest notifications. The starting basic pay is fixed by the 7th CPC pay matrix. Your gross salary is higher because of allowances.

RRB NTPC salary per month: how the money is made up

Students often ask me for one number. The honest answer is that NTPC salary per month depends on your level, your city and the current DA. The pay estimate box near the top works this out live for you. Here is what goes into it:

  • Basic pay: the figure in the table above. It rises by about 3% every year as an annual increment.
  • DA: the railways pay this as a share of your basic. Since the rate is revised twice a year, this page does not print a fixed figure.
  • House Rent Allowance (HRA): depends on the city class of your posting. X class cities (big metros) pay the most, then Y, then Z. If you live in railway quarters, you do not get HRA.
  • Transport Allowance: paid every month at a rate linked to your pay level and whether you work in a big city, with DA added to it.
  • Cuts from pay: your pension contribution under NPS (one tenth of basic and DA together), a small group insurance amount, and income tax only if your yearly income crosses the tax limit.

To work out your own figure, use the calculator below. Put in the basic pay of your post and pick your city class.

Railway staff also get some things that do not show on the salary slip: free railway passes for you and your family every year, a privilege ticket order for concession travel, railway hospital treatment, and a chance at railway quarters near the station.

Train Manager salary (Goods Guard salary)

The old post of Goods Guard is now called Goods Train Manager. The basic pay is ₹29,200 at Level 5. Because a Train Manager is running staff, he or she also earns running allowance for the kilometres covered on duty. This is why the actual take home of a goods train manager is often higher than a desk post at the same level. The exact allowance depends on your trips in that month.

Railway TC and TTE salary

Many students search for railway TTE salary or railway TC salary. Ticket checking staff are part of the commercial department. Through NTPC you enter this department as Commercial cum Ticket Clerk (Level 3, ₹21,700 basic) after 12th, or as Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor (Level 6, ₹35,400 basic) after graduation. Whether you work at a booking counter or on trains checking tickets depends on the zone and your posting. TTE salary rises with promotions in the commercial cadre, and staff on train duty also get some travel related allowances.

Age relaxation is given on top of the upper limit: 3 years for OBC (non creamy layer), 5 years for SC and ST, and more for PwBD candidates and ex-servicemen. Sometimes a notice adds a one-time extra relaxation, so read the age section carefully. Use the tool below to see if your date of birth fits the cut-off with your category relaxation.

RRB NTPC exam pattern and selection process

Selection for an RRB NTPC job happens in stages. You must clear each one to reach the next.

  1. CBT 1: a common screening test for everyone.
  2. CBT 2: a tougher test for those shortlisted from CBT 1. Your merit is made mainly from this stage.
  3. Skill test: a Computer Based Typing Skill Test for typist and clerk posts, or a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for Station Master and Traffic Assistant. Both are post specific.
  4. Document verification and medical exam.

This is the RRB NTPC exam pattern for the computer tests, as given in the official notifications:

StageGeneral AwarenessMathematicsGeneral Intelligence and ReasoningTotal questionsTime
CBT 140303010090 minutes
CBT 250353512090 minutes

Each question carries one mark and one third of a mark is cut for every wrong answer. Marks are normalised because the exam runs in many shifts. The NTPC exam pattern is the same for the graduate level and the undergraduate level in shape, but the graduate papers are a little harder. PwBD candidates who use a scribe get extra time.

The typing test is qualifying. You must type 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi on a computer. The CBAT for Station Master checks memory, attention and quick decisions; you must reach the minimum score in every test. For Station Master merit, CBT 2 and CBAT marks are combined in the ratio set in the notice.

The exam fee is lower for SC, ST, women, PwBD, ex-servicemen and some other groups, and most of the fee is refunded if you actually sit for CBT 1. Check the fee table in the notification you apply under.

RRB NTPC exam syllabus in short

  • Mathematics: number system, simplification, ratio, percentage, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time and work, time and distance, mensuration, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and basic statistics.
  • Reasoning: analogies, series, coding decoding, blood relations, syllogism, Venn diagrams, puzzles, directions, data sufficiency and statement conclusion questions.
  • General Awareness: current events, Indian history, geography, polity, economy, general science, sports, culture, famous places and government schemes. This section has the most questions, so it decides a lot of ranks.

The full topic list is printed in the notification. Students from the arts stream should give extra time to maths, while science students should work hard on static general knowledge.

Training and the job after selection

After document verification and medical tests, you get an offer and join a zonal railway training school. Training length depends on the post. A Station Master or Goods Train Manager goes through longer operating training, while clerk posts have shorter training. You get paid a stipend or salary during training as per railway rules.

Day to day work is very different by post:

  • Commercial cum Ticket Clerk: issuing reserved and unreserved tickets, handling cash, checking passes.
  • Accounts and Junior Clerk: files, bills, payroll and office records in divisional offices.
  • Station Master: controlling train movement at a station, signals, safety and staff. Read more on our station master page.
  • Goods Train Manager: in charge of a goods train on the move, checking safety, communicating with the loco pilot and control.

Expect shift duty, night shifts in operating posts, and posting anywhere in the zone of the RRB you chose.

RRB NTPC career growth and promotions

RRB NTPC career growth is steady. Promotions happen through seniority and departmental exams inside your department. A 12th pass Junior Clerk can move to Senior Clerk, then to higher supervisory posts. Graduates who join as Station Master can move up to Station Superintendent and similar posts. Some staff also clear departmental exams for officer level posts later in service.

Even if you do not get a promotion, the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme gives you a financial upgrade to the next level after 10, 20 and 30 years of service. So your pay does not stay stuck.

How to prepare for the RRB NTPC exam

Most of the students I have guided needed 6 to 12 months of steady preparation to clear NTPC. Here is the plan that has worked:

  1. Read the full syllabus from the notification and buy one good standard book for each section.
  2. Study maths and reasoning daily for at least two hours. Speed matters more than difficult tricks.
  3. For general awareness, read a newspaper every day and make short notes. Revise science from class 9 and 10 NCERT books.
  4. Take full mock tests every week in the last three months. Check your mistakes, not just your score.
  5. If you are applying for a typist post, practise typing on a computer from day one.

Many students prepare for NTPC along with SSC CHSL and SSC CGL, as the syllabus overlaps a lot.

Official website and how to apply

Apply only on the official RRB websites or the common application portal linked from them. Every RRB site carries the same notice. On the official site you will find the notification, exam schedule, admit cards, answer keys and results. If someone asks for money to get you a railway job, it is a fraud. For all railway options in one place, see our railway jobs guide and the full government jobs after 12th list.
