Professional courses after 12th commerce: CA, CS and CMA

These three are the most respected commerce courses in India. Each is run by a statutory institute under an Act of Parliament, and each ends with membership of that institute.

CA through ICAI

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India runs the CA course in four parts: Foundation, Intermediate, two years of practical training (articleship) and Final. You can register for Foundation after class 10, but you can take your first Foundation attempt only after appearing in the class 12 exam. Foundation exams are held three times a year. Graduates can skip Foundation through the direct entry route. CA is tough: many students take more than one attempt at each level. But it is one of the best professional courses after 12th commerce for students who are strong in accounts and can study daily for years.

CS through ICSI

The Institute of Company Secretaries of India runs the CS course. After 12th you first clear the CS Executive Entrance Test (CSEET), then the Executive and Professional programmes, plus training. Graduates can join the Executive stage directly without CSEET. A company secretary handles company law, board meetings and legal filings.

CMA through ICMAI

The Institute of Cost Accountants of India runs CMA in Foundation, Intermediate and Final stages, with practical training. CMAs work in costing, budgeting and finance, especially in manufacturing companies and PSUs.

Global options like ACCA and CFA are also popular. See ACCA and CFA courses to compare costs and recognition.

  • Integrated management: IIM Indore runs a five year Integrated Programme in Management. Students who complete it get a BA (Foundations of Management) and an MBA. Admission is through IPMAT and a personal interview.
  • Law: BBA LLB or BCom LLB through CLAT. CLAT UG has no upper age limit. See lawyer career.
  • Economics and statistics: good if you have Maths and like numbers.
  • BCA: some colleges accept commerce students with Maths. See BCA course.
