A civil engineer salary in India for a fresher in private construction is usually around ₹18,000 to ₹35,000 a month, and it rises to roughly ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 a month after 5 to 8 years of good site and design experience. Government posts like Junior Engineer start at a fixed pay level with allowances on top. On this page I compare pay across all the main branches, civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, chemical, aerospace and more, and explain what really pushes an engineer's salary up.
Engineer salary in India: what decides your pay
Two engineers from the same batch can earn very different amounts. The difference usually comes from:
- Branch: computer science and IT roles pay the most at entry; core branches start lower but grow steadily.
- Employer type: government, PSU, large private firm, small contractor or startup.
- College and skills: campus placement at a top college versus off-campus hiring. Practical skills like design software, coding or site management matter a lot.
- Location: metro cities and project sites in remote areas often pay more. Oil, gas and mining sites add field allowances.
- Experience and licences: after 5 years, project responsibility matters more than your degree.

Civil engineer salary per month: private and government
Civil engineers build roads, bridges, buildings, dams, metro lines, water supply and drainage. Freshers usually start as site engineers, quantity surveyors or design trainees.
| Civil role | Where | Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Site engineer (fresher) | Builders, contractors | About ₹18,000 to ₹30,000 a month |
| Structural design engineer | Design consultancies | Grows faster with design software and a master's |
| Project manager (10 years and above) | Large infrastructure firms | ₹1,00,000 a month and above is common |
| Junior Engineer, central government | CPWD, MES, BRO and others through SSC JE | Level 6, basic ₹35,400 plus DA, HRA and TA |
| Junior Engineer, railways | Through RRB JE | Level 6, basic ₹35,400 plus allowances |
| Assistant engineer, state | PWD, irrigation, water boards through state PSC | State pay scale; varies by state |
| Group A engineer | Through UPSC Engineering Services | Level 10, basic ₹56,100 plus allowances |
Civil engineering salary in India grows well in government because of regular promotions: a JE can rise to assistant engineer, and Group A officers move up to executive engineer and above over the years. For the in-hand amount on a pay level, open our 7th CPC salary calculator.
Junior engineer salary and other government engineering jobs
Government engineering jobs are open to both diploma and degree holders. Junior engineer salary on the central pay matrix starts at Level 6 for most JE posts, which is why SSC JE and RRB JE draw huge numbers of applicants. Other routes:
- PSUs through GATE: many public sector undertakings hire graduate engineer trainees using GATE scores. Their pay scales are separate from the pay matrix and are among the best starting packages for core engineers. See PSU jobs.
- ISRO and DRDO: scientist and engineer posts; see ISRO and DRDO scientist.
- State PSC: assistant engineer posts in PWD, irrigation, electricity boards and municipal bodies.
- Defence: technical entries in the army, navy and air force.

Mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering jobs
Mechanical engineer salary depends heavily on industry. Auto plants, heavy machinery and HVAC firms hire freshers for production, maintenance, quality and design roles. Automotive engineer salary rises with CAD and simulation skills.
Electrical engineer salary is strongest in power plants, transmission, railways electrification and electrical contracting. EEE engineering salary is similar. Electrical engineering jobs for freshers often begin as site or maintenance engineers.
Chemical engineer salary is good in refineries, fertiliser, pharma and specialty chemical plants, often with shift allowances. Chemical engineering jobs are fewer but pay well once you have plant experience.
ECE engineering salary depends on whether you go into core electronics, telecom and chip design, or into software. Many ECE graduates move to IT roles.
Computer science and engineering salary
Computer science and engineering salary is the highest on average at entry, and it has the widest spread. A fresher at a small service firm may earn ₹25,000 a month, while strong coders at top product firms earn several times that. Specialist roles like data engineer, devops engineer, cloud engineer and network engineer pay well once you have 2 to 4 years of hands-on work. Read software engineer and data scientist for detail.
Aerospace and aeronautical engineering salary
Aerospace engineer salary and aeronautical engineering salary in India look attractive, but jobs are limited. Most openings are in government aerospace bodies, defence research, aircraft maintenance organisations and a small number of design firms. Aircraft maintenance engineers need a licence from the DGCA. If you love flying machines, also see commercial pilot and air traffic controller.
Highest paying engineering jobs and how to get there
The highest paying engineering jobs usually combine a strong branch with a scarce skill: software and data roles, chip design, petroleum and offshore work, and senior project management in infrastructure. Steps that help any engineer:
- Get into a good college through JEE Main or your state entrance; see BTech courses.
- Do internships every year and learn the tools of your branch.
- Prepare for GATE or government exams in parallel if you want a sarkari naukri.
- Consider an MTech or MBA after a few years of work. See MBA career.
Diploma holders can also enter as JEs; read diploma jobs. For the full picture of top-paying careers across fields, see highest paying jobs in India.
Questions students ask
