MBBS doctor salary in India depends on three things: whether you work in a government or private set-up, whether you have done a postgraduate degree, and which city you work in. A fresh MBBS doctor usually earns a modest amount; specialists earn far more. To get there you need 12th with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, a good NEET UG score, and 5.5 years of MBBS including internship. This page covers the course, fees, NEET, BDS as an option, government jobs and doctor salary at each stage.

What a doctor's work is really like

A doctor examines patients, orders tests, makes a diagnosis, prescribes treatment, does procedures and keeps records. In a government hospital you may see a very large number of patients in one OPD. In emergency and ward duty you work nights and weekends. As a junior resident you will be on your feet for long hours. Later, after specialisation, your work depends on your branch: a surgeon spends long hours in the operation theatre, a physician mostly in OPD and wards, a radiologist with scans.

It is a lifelong study profession. Medicine changes, and doctors keep reading for their whole career. If you like biology, can handle stress, and want work that directly helps people, this path makes sense.

MBBS course duration and route after 12th

The MBBS course duration is 5.5 years: 4.5 years of study followed by a 1 year compulsory rotating internship in a hospital. The National Medical Commission (NMC) regulates medical education and colleges.

StepWhat it involvesTime
12th with PCB and EnglishMinimum marks in PCB set by the NEET rules; lower for reserved categories2 years
NEET UGSingle national entrance for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH seats, run by NTAOnce a year
MBBSPre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical subjects4.5 years
InternshipRotation through medicine, surgery, paediatrics, gynaecology and other departments1 year
MD, MS or DNB (optional)Specialisation after NEET PG3 years
DM or MCh (optional)Super-specialisation, such as cardiology or neurosurgery3 years

So the MD course duration is 3 years after MBBS, and a super-specialist like a cardiologist or neurosurgeon usually studies for 11 years or more after 12th. NEET UG eligibility includes a minimum age of 17 years by 31 December of the admission year. Read the full rules in the NTA information bulletin.

NExT exam for MBBS and the NMC

The NMC Act provides for a National Exit Test (NExT), meant to serve as the final MBBS exam, the licence to practise and the basis for postgraduate admission. Its start has been changed more than once. Until it begins, postgraduate admission is through NEET PG run by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. For the current status of NExT, follow official notices on the NMC website only.

MBBS course fees and BDS course fees

MBBS course fees in government medical colleges are low, from a few thousand to a few lakh rupees in total, depending on the state and institute. AIIMS and many central institutes charge very little. Private and deemed university fees are much higher; the full course can cost several tens of lakh rupees and in some colleges above ₹1 crore. State fee committees fix fees for many private seats, so check your state counselling notice.

BDS course fees follow the same pattern: low in government dental colleges, high in private ones. Students also look at MBBS abroad. If you go abroad, the NMC has strict rules on course length, internship, language of teaching and the screening or licence test you must clear to practise in India. Read the NMC's foreign medical graduate rules before you pay any agent.

BDS course and other options if MBBS does not happen

The BDS course (dentistry course) takes 5 years including a 1 year internship and also needs NEET UG. The BDS course duration is shorter than MBBS. Dentists work in clinics, hospitals, armed forces and teaching. BDS government jobs are fewer than MBBS posts, and BDS salary in early years is often lower, but a well run private clinic can earn well.

Other doctor courses through NEET include BAMS, BHMS and BUMS (see BAMS and AYUSH) and veterinary science. If you love animals, the animal doctor course is B.V.Sc and AH; read about veterinary doctor salary and admission on our veterinary doctor page. Our medical courses after 12th guide lists nursing, pharmacy and allied health options too.

Pros and cons of becoming a doctor

Pros: respect, steady demand in every town, many government openings, and very high earnings for specialists.

Cons: long and costly study, very high NEET competition, years of low pay during residency, night duty and stress. Starting earning only in your late twenties is normal.

How to start: a plan from class 11

  1. Take PCB with English in class 11 and focus on NCERT Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
  2. Prepare for NEET UG for two years and take regular full-length mock tests.
  3. Fill state and all-India counselling choices carefully; keep BDS, BAMS and B.V.Sc as backups.
  4. During MBBS, decide your interest early and prepare for NEET PG or NExT as notified.
