The RBI Assistant salary starts at a basic pay of ₹29,000 a month, and the latest Reserve Bank of India notification puts the starting gross at about ₹58,514 a month without HRA. For a graduate with no work experience, that is well above most clerical jobs in banks or government offices. This page explains the Assistant job, the RBI exam pattern and syllabus, eligibility, and also the smaller Office Attendant post that 10th pass students ask me about.

What an RBI Assistant does

RBI Assistant is the clerical support post of the Reserve Bank of India. You work inside an RBI regional office, not in a public bank branch. Typical work includes data entry and record keeping, handling files and letters, helping officers with returns sent by banks, supporting the issue and currency departments, dealing with public grievances at the counter, and basic accounts work.

The RBI Assistant job profile is mostly a desk job with fixed office hours. You are recruited for one RBI office (city) and usually stay in that region, which is a big plus for students who want to live near home. Work pressure and sales targets, which are common in bank branches, are not part of this job.

Many students call it the "RBI clerk" post. The RBI clerk salary and the RBI Assistant salary are the same thing.

RBI Assistant salary and pay scale

RBI has its own pay scale for Assistants. As per the latest notification, the scale is ₹29,000, rising in stages (₹1,700, then ₹2,040, ₹2,720, ₹2,950, ₹3,370 and ₹4,050 per step) up to ₹78,640 basic over a long career.

Part of payWhat it means for a new Assistant
Starting basic pay₹29,000 a month
Starting gross (without HRA)About ₹58,514 a month, as per the latest notification
Dearness AllowanceA share of basic, revised from time to time
HRA15% of pay if you do not stay in bank quarters
Other allowancesSuch as city compensatory and transport allowance, as per rules
Other benefitsMedical facility, leave fare concession, subsidised loans and pension benefits as per rules

So the RBI Assistant salary per month at the start is close to ₹58,500 gross before HRA. The RBI Assistant salary after 5 years, without promotion, rises to about ₹38,180 basic (three increments of ₹1,700 and two of ₹2,040), and every allowance linked to basic rises with it.

RBI Assistant salary in hand

Your RBI Assistant salary in hand is the gross minus pension contribution, income tax and a few small deductions. Two things move it the most: whether you take bank quarters or HRA, and the DA rate at that time. Because DA changes, any single in-hand figure gets old quickly. Put your own figures into the tool below, or read how each part works in our guide to salary allowances:

RBI salary by post: attendant, Assistant, manager

People search for "rbi salary" or "rbi employee salary" as if there is one figure. There are several entry points into RBI, each with its own scale. Here is the picture from the latest notifications:

RBI also recruits a few Grade A officers (for example in Rajbhasha or protocol and security) and specialists such as legal officers and managers through separate notifications. The rbi grade a salary, rbi legal officer salary and rbi manager salary are given in those notifications. Senior posts like general manager are reached through promotion, not direct exams. For the officer route, read our RBI Grade B guide.

RBI Office Attendant: job, salary and exam pattern

The RBI Office Attendant job is the bank's support staff post. Duties include carrying files and dak, keeping records in order, helping at the counter and other office support work. Only 10th pass candidates can apply. Graduates are not eligible, and you need knowledge of the local language of the state.

The RBI Office Attendant exam pattern is simple: one online objective test with reasoning, general English, general awareness and numerical ability, followed by a Language Proficiency Test that is qualifying only. Merit is based only on the online test. The RBI attendant salary, or RBI Office Attendant salary per month, is set in the notification for each cycle, so check the latest one on the RBI site. For other options at this level, see government jobs after 10th.

The RBI Assistant mains exam pattern decides your rank. Final selection is from mains marks, subject to passing the LPT, medical test and document check. The RBI exam syllabus is the usual bank syllabus: puzzles and seating, simplification and data interpretation, reading comprehension, banking and current affairs, and computer basics. RBI news and policy terms carry extra weight in general awareness.

Training, promotions and how to prepare

New Assistants learn on the job in their office, moving across sections. Growth comes from time scale increments and internal promotion. Assistants can also move up to officer level through RBI's internal selection, which is one of the main reasons graduates prefer this post over other clerk jobs.

How to get a job in RBI at this level? Most students who clear it give 4 to 6 months of steady practice. Do one sectional test daily, read one newspaper and RBI press releases, and take full mocks in the last two months. The same preparation helps for IBPS Clerk and SBI Clerk, so you can apply to all three in one year. Also see other jobs after graduation.
