RRB JE job profile: what a Junior Engineer does in Indian Railways
A Junior Engineer is the first-level supervisor on the technical side of the railways. You are not a desk clerk and you are not a labourer. You lead a team of technicians and track staff and you are responsible for safe, working assets in your section.
- Civil (Permanent Way, Works, Bridges): track inspection, rail and sleeper renewal, station buildings, bridges.
- Mechanical: coaches and wagons in carriage depots and workshops, diesel sheds.
- Electrical: overhead traction wires, electric locomotives, power supply to stations and colonies.
- Signal and Telecom, Electronics: signals, interlocking, track circuits, railway communication.
The RRB JE job profile has shift duty in some units and field work in all weather. Breakdowns at night are part of life. In return you get a respected post, a fixed career ladder and a job that keeps trains moving.
Who conducts the RRB JE exam and which posts it covers
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways run the RRB JE exam through one Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) for all 21 boards. You choose one RRB when you apply. The latest notice covered three posts, all at Level 6:
| Post | Who it suits | Pay level | Starting basic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Junior Engineer (JE) | Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and allied diploma or degree holders | Level 6 | ₹35,400 |
| Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) | Three-year engineering diploma in any branch | Level 6 | ₹35,400 |
| Chemical and Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) | B.Sc with Physics and Chemistry | Level 6 | ₹35,400 |
Some older notices also had a JE (Information Technology) post at the same level, so the RRB JE IT salary was the same as other JEs. Whether it comes back depends on the notification. Vacancy numbers change every cycle, so check them on your RRB website.
Eligibility, RRB JE course and age limit with relaxations
Students often ask which RRB JE course they need. There is no special course. You need a three-year diploma or a B.E. or B.Tech in the branch mapped to the post. The notification has a table that links each JE category to the accepted branches, so read it before choosing. For CMA you need a B.Sc with Physics and Chemistry. You must hold the final qualification by the closing date. Students waiting for results are not eligible.
The age limit in the latest notice was 18 to 33 years. Upper age relaxation:
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years |
| SC and ST | 5 years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3, 6 or 8 years by category, after deducting service |
| PwBD | 10, 13 or 15 years by category |
| Serving railway Group C staff with 3 years of service | Upper age 40, 43 or 45 by category |
| Widowed, divorced or judicially separated women | Upper age 35, 38 or 40 by category |
Only the single highest relaxation applies. Use the checker below to see your age on the cut-off date. You can also read our age limit guide for government jobs.
RRB JE salary per month: pay level and salary breakdown
The salary of RRB JE is the same for all three posts because they sit at Level 6, so the RRB JE starting salary and the RRB JE basic salary are both ₹35,400. Here is how the monthly pay is built:
- Basic pay: ₹35,400 at entry. It rises by about 3% every year with the annual increment.
- Dearness Allowance (DA): a percentage of basic. The government revises it twice a year.
- HRA: depends on your posting city class X, Y or Z. If you get a railway quarter, HRA stops and a small licence fee is charged.
- Transport Allowance: a fixed amount plus DA on it, higher in big cities.
- Deductions: 10% of basic plus DA goes to the pension scheme (NPS), plus small amounts for CGHS or railway medical, group insurance and income tax if your income crosses the limit.
For the exact RRB JE salary in hand with the current DA, check the pay summary box near the top of this page or use the calculator below. A JE posted in a Z class town usually takes home less than one in Mumbai or Delhi only because of HRA and transport allowance. The basic is the same everywhere.
Railway perks matter too: free rail passes for you and family every year, privilege ticket orders at a small fare, railway hospitals, and quarters in many places. Read how salary allowances work if these terms are new to you.
RRB JE salary after 5 years and after 10 years
Your pay grows in three ways: the yearly increment, DA revisions, and promotions. With increments alone, basic moves from ₹35,400 to roughly ₹41,000 after 5 years and to around ₹47,000 after 10 years if you stay at Level 6.
Most JEs do not stay at Level 6 that long. The usual next step is Senior Section Engineer (SSE) at Level 7, where basic starts at ₹44,900 or higher depending on your pay at that time. If promotion is slow, the MACP scheme moves you to the next pay level on completing 10, 20 and 30 years of service. So the RRB JE salary after 10 years for most people is at Level 7 range with higher DA and HRA on top. I am not giving one exact figure because DA and city change it.
RRB JE exam pattern: CBT 1 and CBT 2
Selection has four stages: CBT 1, CBT 2, document verification and medical examination. There is no interview. CBT 1 only shortlists people for CBT 2. Final merit is made on CBT 2.
| Stage | Subjects (questions) | Total | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBT 1 | Mathematics (30), General Intelligence and Reasoning (25), General Awareness (15), General Science (30) | 100 questions, 100 marks | 90 minutes |
| CBT 2 | General Awareness (15), Physics and Chemistry (15), Basics of Computers and Applications (10), Basics of Environment and Pollution Control (10), Technical Abilities (100) | 150 questions, 150 marks | 120 minutes |
Both papers cut one third of a mark for every wrong answer. Minimum qualifying marks in the latest notice were 40% for UR and EWS, 30% for OBC and SC, and 25% for ST. About 15 times the vacancies are called to CBT 2.
The RRB JE exam syllabus for CBT 1 is close to 10th level science, maths and reasoning. The Technical Abilities part of CBT 2 is the real decider. It follows your diploma subjects. A mechanical student should revise thermodynamics, strength of materials and production. A civil student should revise surveying, RCC, soil mechanics and building materials.
Training, posting and career growth
After document verification and the medical test, you are given an offer and sent for initial training. Railway training centres teach rules, safety and the practical side of your department. Training length differs by department, and pay during this period follows the rules in the notification, so read that part carefully. Then you are posted to a division, workshop or shed in the zone of your RRB.
The RRB JE career growth path usually looks like this:
- Junior Engineer (Level 6)
- Senior Section Engineer (Level 7)
- Group B officer posts such as Assistant Engineer through departmental selection
- Group A posts later in service for those who clear departmental routes
Promotion speed depends on your department, zone and vacancies. Some JEs also clear GATE or the Engineering Services exam later and move to officer posts.
How to prepare for RRB JE
Most diploma students need 6 to 9 months of steady study. Here is a plan that has worked for many of my students:
- Months 1 to 3: CBT 1 basics. Do maths and reasoning daily for one hour. Read 10th level physics, chemistry and biology from NCERT books.
- Months 3 to 7: technical subjects from your diploma notes. Make short notes of formulas. Solve previous RRB JE papers topic by topic.
- Last 2 months: full mock tests under time. Practise environment, pollution control and computer basics, which carry easy marks.
- Read current affairs for 20 minutes a day. General Awareness appears in both papers.
Do not guess wildly. With one third negative marking, ten random guesses can cost you marks. If you also want to try other engineering jobs, compare this with SSC JE and look at jobs after diploma.
Official website and how to apply
Send your form only through the official websites of the RRBs. Each notice lists all 21 boards. The application fee in recent cycles was ₹500 for general candidates with part refund after you sit the CBT, and ₹250 for SC, ST, women, ex-servicemen and some others, refunded after the CBT. Keep your photo, signature and certificates ready in the sizes given. Do not pay any agent who promises a seat. The RRBs warn about touts in every notice.
