The RBI Grade B salary starts at a basic pay of ₹78,450 a month, and the latest Reserve Bank of India advertisement puts the starting gross at about ₹1,50,374 a month before HRA. That makes it one of the best paid entry posts any graduate can reach through an exam in India. Below I explain what the officer does, who can apply, the exam pattern and syllabus, and how pay and rank grow over a career.
What an RBI Grade B officer does
The Reserve Bank of India is the country's central bank. It does not open savings accounts for the public. It prints and manages currency, controls interest rates, supervises banks and NBFCs, manages foreign exchange and keeps an eye on payment systems. A Grade B officer joins this work at the junior management level.
The RBI Grade B job profile changes with your department. In a supervision department you may study the books of a bank and write an inspection report. In the currency department you track how notes reach chests across a state. In foreign exchange you check cases under the rules for money going in and out of India. Policy departments prepare notes and data for senior officers. Most of the work is reading, analysing and writing, not counter work with customers.
Officers are posted in RBI regional offices in state capitals and big cities, and in central office departments in Mumbai. Transfers happen, but you will mostly live in large cities, which matters for family planning.
Three streams in one recruitment
One advertisement covers three streams. Most students apply for the General stream, but you should know all three:
| Stream | Who it is for | Minimum qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Grade B (DR) General | Graduates from any subject | Graduation with 60% (50% for SC, ST, PwBD) or a postgraduate degree with 55% (pass marks for SC, ST, PwBD) |
| Grade B (DR) DEPR | Economics and finance postgraduates | Master's in economics or finance related subjects with at least 55% |
| Grade B (DR) DSIM | Statistics postgraduates | Master's in statistics or related subjects with at least 55% |
DR stands for direct recruit. DEPR is the Department of Economic and Policy Research and DSIM is the Department of Statistics and Information Management. These two streams have their own subject papers, so this page focuses on General.
Eligibility and age limit for the RBI Grade B exam
For the General stream the age limit is 21 to 30 years on the cut-off date given in the notification. Candidates with an M.Phil can go up to 32 years and Ph.D holders up to 34 years. Relaxation on the upper limit:
- SC and ST: 5 years
- OBC (non creamy layer): 3 years
- PwBD: 10 years (General and EWS), 13 years (OBC), 15 years (SC and ST)
- Ex-servicemen and some other groups: as per the notification
The marks rule catches many students. 60% means the aggregate of all semesters or years, not just the final year. As per the notification, General category candidates get a limited number of attempts at Phase I (six), while SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates have no limit. Check your exact date of birth window with the tool below.

RBI Grade B salary structure and pay scale
RBI officers have their own pay scale, separate from the 7th CPC matrix used in central ministries and separate from public sector bank scales. As per the latest advertisement, the Grade B scale is ₹78,450, rising by ₹4,050 a year for nine steps to ₹1,14,900, then two more steps of ₹4,050 after an efficiency bar to ₹1,23,000, then four steps of ₹4,650 to ₹1,41,600. That is 16 years of increments in one grade.
| Part of the package | What you get |
|---|---|
| Starting basic pay | ₹78,450 a month |
| Starting gross (without HRA) | About ₹1,50,374 a month, as per the latest advertisement |
| Dearness Allowance | A share of basic, revised from time to time |
| Local and grade allowances | Paid as per RBI rules |
| Housing | Bank quarters where available, or HRA if you stay in your own place |
| Reimbursements | Items such as vehicle running, telephone, newspapers and books, as per rules |
| Other benefits | Medical facility, leave fare concession, pension benefits and subsidised loans as per rules |
So the salary of RBI Grade B officers is high mainly because the gross on top of basic is large. When people ask about the rbi officer salary in general, remember that each grade has its own scale. The ₹1.5 lakh figure is for a new Grade B officer.
RBI Grade B salary in hand and after 5 years
The RBI Grade B salary in hand is gross pay minus income tax, pension contribution and small deductions. Tax is the biggest cut at this income. Your in-hand will also differ if you take bank quarters (no HRA) or stay outside (HRA paid). Because DA changes, any exact in-hand number you see online goes out of date in a few months. Use the CTC to in-hand tool with the figures from your offer letter:
RBI Grade B salary after 5 years: if you stay in Grade B, five increments of ₹4,050 take the basic from ₹78,450 to ₹98,700. Every allowance linked to basic rises with it. Many officers also get their first promotion to Grade C around this stage, which moves them to a higher scale.
RBI Grade B exam pattern
Selection for the General stream has three stages: Phase I, Phase II and interview. Phase I only shortlists. Final merit is made from Phase II and interview marks.
Phase I (online objective, 200 marks, 120 minutes)
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| General Awareness | 80 | 80 | 25 minutes |
| Reasoning | 60 | 60 | 45 minutes |
| English Language | 30 | 30 | 25 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 30 | 30 | 25 minutes |
Each section has its own timer and a sectional cut-off. One fourth of a mark is cut for each wrong answer.
Phase II (three papers, 300 marks)
- Paper I, Economic and Social Issues: 100 marks, part objective and part descriptive.
- Paper II, English (Writing Skills): 100 marks, descriptive, typed on the computer (essay, precis and comprehension).
- Paper III, Finance and Management: 100 marks, part objective and part descriptive.
After Phase II, shortlisted candidates face an interview of 75 marks. A psychometric test may also be held, but it carries no marks. Fees in the latest cycle were ₹850 plus GST for General, OBC and EWS and ₹100 plus GST for SC, ST and PwBD.
RBI Grade B exam syllabus in short
Phase I is close to a tough bank PO prelims, with a heavy general awareness section. Phase II is where this exam becomes different from every other bank exam.
- General Awareness: current affairs of the last six months, banking and RBI news, government schemes, static GK.
- Reasoning: puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, inequality, data sufficiency.
- Economic and Social Issues: growth and development, Indian economy, globalisation, social structure, inclusive growth, the Union Budget and Economic Survey.
- Finance and Management: financial system, financial markets, risk management, RBI and SEBI basics, plus management topics like leadership, motivation, communication and ethics.
- English writing: essay, precis, reading comprehension. Daily writing practice matters more than grammar rules here.

Training, probation and career growth
New officers serve a probation period during which they attend training at RBI's own training colleges and learn work across departments. After confirmation, your growth runs through grades. A rough ladder: Grade B, Grade C, Grade D, Grade E, Grade F, then Chief General Manager and Executive Director. Promotions are through internal processes based on service, performance and interviews.
RBI Grade B career growth also includes study leave and sponsored higher studies for officers who perform well, as per rules. The bigger point: you work close to national policy, which is rare at 25 or 26 years of age.
How to prepare and is a coaching course needed
From students I have guided, serious candidates give 8 to 12 months to this exam, longer if they are working. A simple plan:
- First 2 months: finish reasoning, quant and English basics, and read one newspaper daily.
- Next 3 months: Economic and Social Issues and Finance and Management from standard books and RBI, government and Budget documents.
- Write one answer and one short essay every day, typed on a computer, because Phase II is typed.
- Last 2 to 3 months: full mocks for Phase I, and timed answer writing for Phase II.
Students often ask about an RBI Grade B course. A paid course can give structure and mock tests, but many selected candidates prepared from the official syllabus, RBI publications, the Economic Survey and Budget speech, and good practice papers. Choose based on your discipline, not fear. If you also want a backup, the same reasoning and English work helps for SBI PO and IBPS PO, and for RBI Assistant if you want to enter RBI at the support level.
