RRB technician job: what a railway technician does
Technicians are the skilled hands of Indian Railways. They repair and maintain everything that moves or carries power. An ITI fitter may work on coach brakes in a carriage depot. An electrician may maintain overhead wires or train lighting. A welder may join rail ends on the track. A Signal technician looks after signals, point machines and interlocking.
The RRB technician job is hands-on and physical. Many units run in shifts, and you may be called for a breakdown at night. Workshops have fixed hours. Running sheds and track work follow train timings. If you like tools more than files, this is a solid sarkari job with a clear promotion ladder.
Who conducts the exam and which posts are offered
The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways run one Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) for technicians across all boards. The latest notice offered two kinds of posts:
| Post | Pay level | Starting basic | Age limit (latest notice) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technician Grade I Signal | Level 5 | ₹29,200 | 18 to 33 years |
| Technician Grade III (about 30 trades) | Level 2 | ₹19,900 | 18 to 30 years |
Grade III covers about 30 trade categories, such as fitter, electrician, welder, machinist and Signal maintainer posts. The full trade list is in the notice. Each trade has its own medical standard. Vacancies change every cycle, so check the latest notice on your RRB website.
Eligibility and age limit with relaxations
Technician Grade III: 10th pass (Matriculation or SSLC) plus an ITI certificate from an NCVT or SCVT institute in the matching trade, or 10th plus a completed Act Apprenticeship in that trade. For some Signal and Telecom trades, 12th with Physics and Maths may also be accepted. The notice is clear that an engineering diploma or degree is not accepted in place of ITI for Grade III unless the trade table says so.
Technician Grade I Signal: B.Sc in Physics, Electronics, Computer Science, IT or Instrumentation, or a diploma or degree in engineering in the related branches. Check the exact list in the notification annexure.
Upper age relaxation in the latest notice:
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC or ST candidates | 5 more years |
| OBC candidates (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 more years |
| Ex-servicemen | 3, 6 or 8 years by category, after deducting service |
| PwBD | 10, 13 or 15 years by category |
| Completed Act Apprentices (Grade III) | Period of apprenticeship, up to 3 years |
| Women who are widowed, divorced or judicially separated and not remarried | Can apply till 35 (UR, EWS), 38 (OBC) or 40 (SC, ST) |
Relaxations do not add up. Only the highest one applies. Check your own age below.
Railway technician salary per month: pay level and breakdown
The RRB technician salary per month has these parts:
- Basic pay: ₹19,900 for Grade III, ₹29,200 for Grade I Signal. It goes up about 3% each year.
- DA: a percentage of basic, revised by the government twice a year.
- HRA: paid by the class of your posting city (X, Y or Z). It stops if you take a railway quarter.
- Transport Allowance: fixed monthly amount plus DA on it.
- Night duty and running allowances: paid where your duty qualifies under railway rules.
- Deductions: 10% of basic plus DA to the pension scheme (NPS), group insurance, and income tax if applicable.
The pay box at the start of this page works out the current figures for both levels. For your own city and DA, try the calculator below. The RRB technician salary in hand is lower in a small town than in a metro only because HRA and transport allowance are lower. Basic pay does not change by city.
Railway technician grade 3 salary and growth with promotions
Most people join as Grade III, so the railway technician grade 3 salary matters most. You start at ₹19,900 basic. After that, the normal ladder is:
| Post | Pay level | Starting basic of the level |
|---|---|---|
| Technician Grade III | Level 2 | ₹19,900 |
| Technician Grade II | Level 4 | ₹25,500 |
| Technician Grade I | Level 5 | ₹29,200 |
| Senior Technician | Level 6 | ₹35,400 |
| Junior Engineer (departmental quota) | Level 6 | ₹35,400 |
Promotion speed depends on vacancies in your unit and passing trade tests. Some technicians later clear the departmental exam for Junior Engineer, or study for a diploma and apply for RRB JE through open recruitment. If promotions are slow, MACP lifts your pay level at the 10, 20 and 30 year marks of service.
So the salary of railway technician staff grows steadily. A Grade III technician who reaches Grade I in about a decade will have a basic close to double the joining figure, before DA.
RRB technician exam pattern
Selection is a single Computer Based Test (CBT), then document verification and a medical examination. There is no interview. Both grades have 100 questions for 100 marks in 90 minutes, with one third of a mark cut for each wrong answer.
| Subject | Grade I Signal | Grade III |
|---|---|---|
| Mathematics | 20 | 25 |
| General Intelligence and Reasoning | 15 | 25 |
| General Awareness | 10 | 10 |
| Basics of Computers and Applications | 20 | Not included |
| Basic Science and Engineering / General Science | 35 | 40 |
The subject split is indicative and can change slightly in a new notice. The exam is offered in English, Hindi and many regional languages. Medical standards differ by trade, from A3 to C1, and the notice lists them. Eyesight rules are strict for some trades, so check yours before you apply.
Training after selection
After the medical test you are given an appointment and sent for initial training in a zonal training centre or workshop. The notice states that only a stipend is paid during training, and full pay starts after you join a working post. You may also need to sign a bond in some cases. Training teaches safety rules, railway working and your trade on real equipment. Then you are posted to a depot, shed, workshop or section in the zone of your RRB.
How to prepare for the technician CBT
For most ITI students, 4 to 6 months of regular study is enough. A simple plan:
- Do one hour of maths daily: percentages, ratio, time and work, mensuration, simplification.
- Practise reasoning puzzles, series, coding and analogies for 30 minutes.
- Revise 10th level physics and chemistry, plus your ITI theory: tools, measuring instruments, basic electricity and machines.
- Grade I Signal candidates should add computer basics: word processing and spreadsheet basics, internet, memory, input and output devices.
- Solve previous RRB technician papers and take a full mock test every week in the last two months.
Do not guess blindly because of negative marking. If you hold an ITI, also look at Assistant Loco Pilot, which takes ITI holders, and RRB Group D. Our ITI jobs and ITI courses pages help you pick a trade.
Official website and how to apply
Fill the form only on the official RRB websites listed in the notice. You apply to one RRB only. The fee in the latest notice was ₹500 for general candidates, with ₹400 refunded after you sit the CBT, and ₹250 for SC, ST, women, ex-servicemen and some other groups, refunded after the CBT. Keep your 10th marksheet, ITI or apprenticeship certificate and category certificate ready. For all railway options in one place, see our railway jobs guide.
Questions students ask
What is the railway technician salary per month?
Technician Grade III starts at ₹19,900 basic (Level 2) and Technician Grade I Signal at ₹29,200 basic (Level 5). DA, HRA and transport allowance are added on top. Check the pay box at the start of this page for a current in-hand figure.
What is the RRB technician salary in hand?
In-hand pay is basic plus DA, HRA and transport allowance, minus NPS and other deductions. It is higher in X class cities because HRA is higher there. Use the salary calculator on this page with your city class for an estimate.
What qualification is needed for Technician Grade III?
You need 10th pass plus an ITI from an NCVT or SCVT institute in the related trade, or 10th plus a completed Act Apprenticeship. An engineering diploma is not accepted in place of ITI for Grade III unless the notice says so.
What is the RRB technician exam pattern?
There is one CBT of 100 questions in 90 minutes. It covers maths, reasoning, general awareness and science, and Grade I Signal also has computer basics. One third of a mark is cut for each wrong answer.
Is there an interview for railway technician?
No. Selection is based on the CBT, then document verification and a medical examination. Merit in the CBT decides who is called for documents.
How does the indian railway technician salary grow?
You move from Grade III (Level 2) to Grade II (Level 4), Grade I (Level 5) and Senior Technician (Level 6) through promotions. Yearly increments of about 3% and DA revisions add to this. MACP gives upgrades if promotion is delayed.
