The JEE Main exam pattern for BE and BTech is simple to remember: one computer based paper of 3 hours, 75 questions from Physics, Chemistry and Maths, 300 marks in total, plus 4 for every right answer and minus 1 for every wrong one. The National Testing Agency (NTA) holds JEE Main in two sessions a year, and your better score is used. This guide explains who can apply, how each paper is set, what to study, how the score is used for NITs, IIITs and IITs, and how to prepare without wasting a year.

All details here are from the latest official information bulletin. Dates, fees and rules can change in a new cycle, so read the bulletin on the official website before you fill the form.

What is JEE exam and who conducts it

JEE stands for Joint Entrance Examination. The JEE entrance exam is the main engineering entrance exam in India for students who finish class 12 with Physics and Maths. There are two levels:

  • JEE Main, conducted by NTA, used for NITs, IIITs, other centrally funded technical institutes and many state colleges.
  • JEE Advanced, conducted by the IITs, used only for IIT admission. You must first do well in JEE Main to sit for it.

Parents often club the JEE Main and NEET exam together because NTA runs both. They are very different. JEE Main is for engineering, architecture and planning, and needs Maths. NEET UG is for MBBS and other medical seats, and needs Biology. JEE Main is a computer based test in two sessions; NEET is a single pen and paper exam. If you are still unsure which side suits you, compare both in our list of entrance exams after 12th.

JEE Main eligibility and exam criteria

The JEE exam criteria are friendlier than most people think. Here is what the latest bulletin says.

PointRule in the latest bulletin
Age limitNo age limit for JEE Main. Admitting institutes may have their own age rule.
Year of class 12Passed in the previous two years, or appearing this year. Older pass-outs cannot apply.
BE or BTech subjectsPhysics and Maths, plus one of Chemistry, Biology, Biotechnology or a technical vocational subject
BArch subjectsPhysics and Maths compulsory, with 45% aggregate for admission
BPlanning subjectsMaths, with 50% in Maths and 50% aggregate for admission
NIT, IIIT, CFTI admission75% in class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or top 20 percentile of your board

So you can write JEE Main in the year of class 12 and in the two years after it, with two sessions each year. The 75% rule matters only at the admission stage, not for writing the exam. A student with 70% can still sit for JEE Main and use the rank for state colleges that do not follow this rule.

JEE Main exam pattern for Paper 1 (BE, BTech)

Paper 1 is what most students write. Each subject has two parts. Section A has multiple choice questions. Section B has numerical value questions, where you type a number instead of picking an option. The answer is rounded to the nearest whole number.

SubjectSection A (MCQ)Section B (numerical)Marks
Mathematics205100
Physics205100
Chemistry205100
Total6015300
  • Time: 3 hours. Eligible PwD or PwBD candidates with a scribe get 4 hours.
  • Marking: plus 4 for a correct answer and minus 1 for a wrong answer in both sections. A question you leave blank gets zero.
  • Calculator: not allowed in any form.
  • Languages: 13 options, including English, Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and other regional languages.

Since every question now carries negative marking, guessing hurts. Attempt a numerical question only when you have worked it out.

JEE exam pattern for BArch (Paper 2A) and BPlanning (Paper 2B)

Students who want architecture or planning write Paper 2. You can choose Paper 1, Paper 2 or both in the same form.

PaperPart IPart IIPart IIITotal
Paper 2A (BArch)Maths: 25 questions, 100 marksAptitude: 50 questions, 200 marksDrawing: 2 questions, 100 marks, on paper77 questions, 400 marks
Paper 2B (BPlanning)Maths: 25 questions, 100 marksAptitude: 50 questions, 200 marksPlanning: 25 questions, 100 marks100 questions, 400 marks

Both papers are 3 hours long. The drawing test in Paper 2A is done with pencil on an A4 sheet; everything else is on computer. Many architecture colleges also ask for NATA, so BArch hopefuls usually prepare for both. Read more on the work itself in our architect career guide.

JEE Main syllabus outline

The syllabus follows class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths, and NTA publishes the full chapter list on the official website. In short:

  • Maths: sets and relations, complex numbers, quadratic equations, matrices and determinants, permutations, binomial theorem, sequences, limits, differentiation, integration, differential equations, coordinate geometry, 3D geometry, vectors, statistics, probability and trigonometry.
  • Physics: units, kinematics, laws of motion, work and energy, rotation, gravitation, properties of matter, thermodynamics, waves, electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, EMI and AC, optics, modern physics, semiconductors and experimental skills.
  • Chemistry: physical (mole concept, atomic structure, bonding, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, kinetics), inorganic (periodic table, p, d and f block, coordination compounds) and organic (basic principles, hydrocarbons, functional groups, biomolecules).

If you master your NCERT books for these three subjects, you already cover most of the paper. The hard part is speed and accuracy, not secret topics.

How JEE Main scores are used

Raw marks from different shifts are converted into an NTA score, which is a percentile. This removes the advantage of an easy shift. If you write both sessions, the better NTA score is used for your rank.

  • NITs, IIITs and CFTIs: seats are allotted through joint counselling using your JEE Main rank, plus the class 12 criterion explained above.
  • IITs: only the top 2,50,000 Paper 1 candidates (across all categories) become eligible for JEE Advanced. IIT seats come only through JEE Advanced.
  • State colleges: some states use JEE Main ranks. Others hold their own test, for example the Kerala engineering entrance exam, or Gujarat and Maharashtra state CETs. Check your state admission rules.
  • Other bodies: some central and state government organisations also use JEE Main scores under their own rules.

One more name you may hear is the IIT JAM exam. It is not for class 12 students. It is a test for MSc and similar courses at IITs after a bachelor's degree, so keep it for later.

IIT courses, NIT branches and careers after JEE

Most JEE students aim for a 4 year BTech. Common IIT courses and NIT branches are computer science, electrical, electronics, mechanical, civil, chemical, metallurgy and newer ones like data science. IITs also run 5 year dual degree programmes. Admission to these, such as IIT Delhi course admissions or IIT Madras course admissions for BTech, is only through JEE Advanced and joint counselling, never through a separate form. Short online courses that IITs sometimes offer are a different thing and do not give a BTech seat.

People ask about IIT salary per month a lot. There is no fixed figure. Placement packages depend on the branch, the institute, the student's skills and the job market that year, and many graduates choose higher studies or government jobs instead. Each IIT publishes placement data on its own site. For a realistic picture across colleges, read our engineer salary guide and software engineer career page. After BTech, an IIT Delhi career or any engineering career can also go towards PSUs through GATE, the engineering services exam or research.

Preparation plan for the JEE Main entrance exam

From years of guiding students, the ones who clear JEE are usually not the smartest in class. They are the most regular. A practical plan:

  1. Class 11: build concepts chapter by chapter. Finish NCERT questions first, then a standard problem book.
  2. Class 12 first half: complete the class 12 syllabus while revising class 11 every weekend. Board marks matter for the 75% rule, so do not ignore school.
  3. Last four months: full length mock tests on computer, at least two a week, in the same 3 hour slot. Analyse every wrong answer.
  4. Session 1 as practice: treat the first session as a real attempt, then fix weak chapters before session 2.
  5. Use past papers: NTA puts previous question papers and answer keys on its site. These are the best practice material.

Most serious students prepare for about two years alongside school. A drop year helps some, but plan a backup like BTech through a state CET or CUET for BSc.

Official website, application fee and how to apply

Apply only on the official JEE Main website. The form, city slip, admit card and score card all come from there. In the latest bulletin, the fee for one paper at centres in India was ₹1,000 for General boys and ₹800 for General girls, ₹900 for EWS and OBC (NCL) boys, and ₹500 for SC, ST, PwD and third gender candidates. Fees for two papers are higher. Bank charges and GST are extra. Check the current bulletin, since these figures can change.

Questions students ask

What is JEE exam in simple words?

JEE is the national engineering entrance exam. JEE Main, held by NTA, gives admission to NITs, IIITs and many other colleges, and is the first step for JEE Advanced, which is the only route into IITs.

What is the JEE Main exam pattern for BTech?

Paper 1 has 75 questions: 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, split into 20 MCQs and 5 numerical questions per subject. It carries 300 marks, lasts 3 hours, and gives plus 4 for a right answer and minus 1 for a wrong one.

Is there an age limit for the JEE Main entrance exam?

No. The latest bulletin has no age limit for JEE Main. What matters is the year you passed class 12: you must have passed in the previous two years or be appearing this year. Institutes can still set their own age rules.

How many times can I write JEE Main?

You can write it in your class 12 year and the two years after, and there are two sessions every year. If you write both sessions in a year, the better NTA score is used.

Do I need 75% in class 12 for JEE Main?

Not to write the exam. The 75% rule (65% for SC, ST and PwD) applies only for admission to NITs, IIITs and other central institutes. Being in the top 20 percentile of your board also meets the condition.

What is the difference between JEE Main and NEET exam?

JEE Main is for engineering, architecture and planning and needs Physics and Maths. NEET UG is for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses and needs Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Both are run by NTA but have different patterns and syllabi.
