The NSG commando salary is not a separate pay scale. NSG commandos are serving soldiers and police personnel who come on deputation from the Army, the Central Armed Police Forces and state police. They keep the pay level of their rank in the parent force and get an extra special allowance while posted in NSG. So the first step to becoming a Black Cat commando is to join the Army or a police force, serve well and then volunteer.
What is NSG and what does a Black Cat commando do
NSG stands for National Security Guard. The Ministry of Home Affairs calls it its national counter terror force, and every member is on deputation from another force. Its commandos wear black uniforms, which is why people call them Black Cats. Their main jobs are:
- Counter-terrorist operations, such as freeing hostages from buildings, buses, trains or aircraft.
- Bomb detection and bomb disposal.
- Close protection of some high-risk persons, as decided by the government.
- Security cover at major national events.
Daily life is mostly hard training: shooting, close quarter combat, room clearing drills, rappelling from helicopters, driving and fitness. Teams stay on short notice, ready to move anywhere in India.
How you join NSG: no direct recruitment
There is no NSG commando exam for fresh 12th or graduate students. NSG fills its ranks from two sources:
| NSG unit | Comes from | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Special Action Group (SAG) | Indian Army personnel on deputation | Main strike teams for counter-terrorist operations |
| Special Ranger Group (SRG) | Central Armed Police Forces and state police on deputation | Support, cordon, protection and other operational roles |
The Ministry of Home Affairs describes NSG as a 100 percent deputation force: a little over half its people come from the Army, and the rest from forces such as BSF, CRPF and ITBP and from state police.
So your real choice today is the entry route into a parent force. For the Army, see Indian Army jobs, Agniveer and NDA. For police forces, see CRPF, BSF, CISF and ITBP and SSB. After some years of service with a clean record and strong fitness, you can volunteer for NSG when your force calls for names.
Eligibility for NSG deputation
Exact rules are set by NSG and each parent force, and they change from time to time. In general, the person must:
- Be a serving member of the Army, a CAPF or a state police force, and volunteer for NSG.
- Be in a suitable rank and age bracket fixed for deputation.
- Have very high physical fitness and the required medical category.
- Have a clean service record with no disciplinary cases.
- Be recommended by the parent unit or force.
Because of this, there is no single NSG age limit you can check before joining any force. The age limit that matters at the start is the one for your entry into the Army or police. Read age limit for govt jobs to plan that step.
NSG commando salary per month: how it is made up
The NSG commando salary per month, or Black Cat commando salary per month, has three parts:
- Basic pay of your rank in the parent force: you stay on the same pay level you held before coming to NSG. A soldier, a constable and an officer therefore get very different basic pay.
- Normal allowances of your parent force: such as Dearness Allowance, and for Army personnel, Military Service Pay.
- Special Security Allowance: an extra allowance paid during the NSG tenure. Recent NSG deputation notices for some posts give it as 40 percent of basic pay, along with free ration or ration money and family housing or HRA. Rates are set by government orders, so confirm the one for your rank.
Amounts quoted on social media are often old or wrong. That is why we do not give one fixed nsg commando monthly salary figure for the nsg commando salary in India. Ask your parent force or check NSG and Ministry of Home Affairs orders for the current rate.
To understand what DA, HRA and transport allowance mean on any government pay slip, read salary allowances explained, or use the calculator below with your parent force pay level.
NSG ranks and salary: soldier versus officer
Since pay follows your parent rank, the nsg ranks and salary picture looks like this. For Army officers, the starting basic pay is ₹56,100 for a Lieutenant at Level 10, plus Military Service Pay. Higher ranks such as Major and Lieutenant Colonel sit on higher pay levels, so they bring a higher basic with them.
| Who comes to NSG | What decides basic pay | Extra in NSG |
|---|---|---|
| Army soldier (regular cadre) | Pay level of his rank, from Sepoy upwards | Special Security Allowance |
| Army officer | Level 10 (Lieutenant, ₹56,100) and above, plus Military Service Pay | Special Security Allowance |
| CAPF constable or head constable | CAPF pay level of the rank | Special Security Allowance |
| CAPF or state police officer | Pay level of the rank in the parent force | Special Security Allowance |
So the nsg officer salary is much higher than a commando's because the officer already earns a higher basic pay. The NSG part only adds to it. This is the honest answer to nsg commando ki salary, and to the question of NSG salary in general: it is your normal salary, plus the Special Security Allowance for the time you serve in NSG.
SPG commando salary and how SPG differs from NSG
SPG full form is Special Protection Group. Under the Special Protection Group Act, it gives close protection to the Prime Minister and the immediate family living at the official residence, and for a limited period to some family members of a former Prime Minister. The Act lets the central government appoint members of other armed forces of the Union to the Group, so SPG staff come from other forces rather than straight from school or college.
- SPG salary: SPG personnel draw the pay of their rank, plus a special SPG allowance. The central government decision on 7th CPC allowances set it at 55 percent of basic pay for operational duty and 27.5 percent for non operational duty.
- Main job: NSG is a counter-terror strike force; SPG is a close protection force.
- Law and control: NSG is set up under the NSG Act and works under the Ministry of Home Affairs. SPG is an armed force of the Union under its own Act, controlled by the central government.
So the salary of SPG commando staff, like the NSG black cat commando salary, depends first on rank in the parent force. Anyone quoting a single spg commando salary figure for everyone is oversimplifying.
Selection and training at NSG
Volunteers from parent forces go through screening that tests fitness, shooting, mental strength and medical standards. Those who pass then do a demanding probation and training course. NSG's main campus and training facilities are at Manesar in Gurugram, Haryana, and its Training Centre was set up to train NSG probationers. Many volunteers drop out at this stage. Those who complete training join a team and are posted to an NSG unit or one of its regional hubs, such as Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Jammu, for their deputation period. After the tenure, they return to their parent force.
How to prepare for a future NSG career
- Pick a parent force: the Army route gives a path to the Special Action Group, while CAPF and state police routes lead to the Special Ranger Groups. Compare sub inspector and CAPF assistant commandant if you want to enter as an officer in a police force.
- Build fitness early: running, swimming, pull-ups and core work. NSG volunteers are among the fittest in their units.
- Learn to shoot well: once you join, take every firing practice seriously. Good firing scores help you get recommended.
- Keep a clean record: discipline issues usually end your chance of deputation.
- Do specialist courses: commando, weapons or bomb disposal courses in your parent force make your profile stronger.
Official website and where to check
NSG information is on nsg.gov.in, and orders on deputation and allowances come from the Ministry of Home Affairs at mha.gov.in. To start the journey, apply through the official recruitment websites of the Army, CAPFs or your state police. Be careful of fake calls or messages offering direct NSG jobs for money: NSG does not recruit civilians as commandos.
Questions students ask
What is the NSG commando salary per month?
There is no separate NSG pay scale. A commando gets the basic pay and allowances of his rank in the parent force, plus the NSG Special Security Allowance during deputation. So the monthly amount differs for a soldier, a constable and an officer.
Can I join NSG directly after 12th or graduation?
No. NSG does not recruit civilians as commandos. You first join the Army, a Central Armed Police Force or state police, and then volunteer for NSG deputation after some years of service.
What is the black cat commando salary?
Black Cat is the popular name for NSG commandos. Their salary is the same as their parent force pay for their rank, plus the Special Security Allowance while in NSG.
What is the SPG full form and SPG salary?
SPG means Special Protection Group, the force that protects the Prime Minister. SPG staff are appointed from other forces and get the pay of their rank plus an SPG allowance worked out as a percentage of basic pay.
Is NSG officer salary higher than NSG commando salary?
Yes, because officers already have a higher basic pay in their parent force. For example, an Army Lieutenant starts at ₹56,100 basic at Level 10 plus Military Service Pay. The NSG allowance is added on top.
Where is NSG training done?
NSG's main campus and training facilities are at Manesar in Gurugram, Haryana. Volunteers go through screening, then a tough probation and training course before joining an NSG unit.
