Looking for biotechnology course details after class 12? Biotechnology uses living cells, microbes and their molecules to make useful products: vaccines, medicines, diagnostic kits, better seeds, enzymes for industry and cleaner ways to treat waste. You can enter through a BSc in biotechnology (3 years) or a BTech in biotechnology (4 years). Good jobs in this field usually need an MSc, MTech or PhD, so plan for a longer study path than in many other careers. This page covers courses, entrance exams, fees, jobs and an honest view of biotechnology salary.

What biotechnologists actually do

Most of the work happens in labs and production plants. A biotech graduate might grow cell cultures, run PCR and other DNA tests, purify proteins, check batches of a vaccine for quality, or analyse gene data on a computer. Some work in fields, testing new crop varieties. Others work in hospitals and diagnostic labs. Research scientists design experiments, read papers and write reports. Production and quality staff follow strict written procedures, because a single mistake can spoil a whole batch.

BSc biotechnology course details in short: a BSc biotechnology course teaches cell biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, bioinformatics and lab methods. A BTech biotech course adds engineering subjects like bioprocess engineering, fermentation, transfer of mass and heat, and plant design. Choose BSc if you lean towards research, and BTech if you like the factory and engineering side. Read more about both on BSc courses and BTech courses.

Biomedical engineering course details

Biomedical engineering is a different branch, though people often mix it up with biotechnology. It joins engineering with medicine: designing and maintaining ECG machines, ventilators, dialysis units, implants and imaging equipment. The BTech takes 4 years after PCM. Graduates work with hospitals, medical device makers and service teams. Biomedical science courses, on the other hand, are biology degrees that focus on human disease and lab testing.

Biotechnology entrance exams

  • BSc: CUET UG for central and many state universities; merit or own tests in others.
  • BTech: JEE Main for NITs and many institutes, state engineering entrance tests, and some university tests.
  • MSc and MTech: CUET PG, GAT-B (conducted by the National Testing Agency for programmes supported by the Department of Biotechnology), GATE for MTech, and university tests.
  • Research fellowship: CSIR NET, BET for DBT fellowships, and GATE scores are used for PhD and research fellowships.

Exam names and rules can change, so check nta.ac.in and the institute's notice each cycle.

Biotechnology course fees

Government colleges and central universities cost much less than private ones. A BSc in a government college may cost a few thousand to around ₹50,000 a year. Private BSc programmes often charge ₹50,000 to ₹2,00,000 a year. BTech in a private college is higher still, often above ₹1,00,000 a year, while government engineering colleges and NITs charge less and offer fee waivers for eligible families. Always confirm the current fee and check that the course has proper lab work.

Jobs for microbiology freshers and BSc biotechnology jobs are mostly in quality control, labs and production. MSc biotechnology jobs and MSc microbiology jobs include research assistant roles, senior QC posts and project positions in research institutes.

Biotechnology government jobs come through research bodies such as CSIR labs, ICMR institutes, DBT institutes and ICAR institutes, plus teaching posts and drug control or food safety departments in states. Scientist posts usually expect a PhD. Project posts are often on fixed-term contracts linked to a research grant.

Biotechnology salary in India

Biotechnology salary per month varies a lot. These are broad ranges, not offers:

ProfileStarting pay per monthAfter 5 to 8 years
BSc biotechnology or microbiology₹12,000 to ₹25,000₹30,000 to ₹60,000
BTech biotechnology₹20,000 to ₹40,000₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000
MSc or MTech biotechnology₹20,000 to ₹45,000₹50,000 to ₹1,20,000
Biomedical engineer₹20,000 to ₹40,000₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000
PhD scientist in a government instituteCentral pay matrix as per the post; private R&D pays by employer

The BSc biotechnology salary is low at first, which surprises many families. Pay grows with a master's degree, strong lab skills, quality and regulatory knowledge, or data skills. Biotechnology engineering salary is usually a little higher at entry because BTech graduates fit production and process roles. Research fellowships during a PhD are paid at rates fixed by the funding agency; check the current rate on the agency's website. Is biotechnology a good career

Plus points: work that matters for health and food, growing vaccine and diagnostics sectors, and strong options abroad for researchers.

Watch out: a bachelor's degree alone often leads to low pay, good research jobs need a PhD, and jobs are concentrated in a few industrial cities. Many graduates move into data, clinical research or quality roles.

It suits you if you enjoy lab work and are ready to study till at least a master's. If you want a fast job after 3 years, compare it with data analyst or pharmacy courses.

How to start

  1. Take PCB or PCM in class 11 and 12, depending on BSc or BTech.
  2. Prepare for CUET UG or JEE Main.
  3. In college, get lab internships every summer.
  4. Learn basic statistics and coding; they help in research and bioinformatics.
  5. Aim for GAT-B, GATE or CUET PG in your final year.
