Here are the CMA course details in plain words. CMA stands for Cost and Management Accountant, and in India it is run by the Institute of Cost Accountants of India (ICMAI), which used to be called ICWAI. That is why older people still call it the ICWA course. A CMA specialises in costing, budgeting, pricing and performance control, the numbers that help a business decide what to make and how cheaply. The course has Foundation, Intermediate and Final levels with practical training, and ICMAI's fees are low compared with most degrees.
What is the CMA course and what does a cost accountant do
A chartered accountant mostly looks at whether past accounts are correct. A cost accountant looks inside the business to see where money is spent and how to spend less. Typical work:
- Working out the cost of each product or service and setting prices.
- Preparing budgets and comparing actual results with them.
- Cost audit: certain companies must keep cost records and get them audited by a practising cost accountant under the Companies Act.
- Management reports for decisions on new plants, outsourcing and cutting waste.
- Taxation, GST and financial management, which are also part of the syllabus.
The CMA course full form, once more, is Cost and Management Accountant. Indian CMA is different from the US CMA offered by a foreign body; this page is about the Indian qualification.
CMA course details: stages, eligibility and duration
| Stage | CMA course eligibility | Papers |
|---|---|---|
| CMA Foundation course | Class 12 passed (registration allowed while appearing) | Four papers |
| CMA Intermediate | Foundation passed, or direct entry for graduates and some other qualified students | Eight papers in two groups |
| Practical training | As per ICMAI rules, alongside Intermediate and Final | Work under a practising cost accountant or in a company |
| CMA Final | Intermediate passed and training conditions met | Eight papers in two groups, including an elective |
CMA course duration from class 12 is about three and a half to four years if you pass each stage on time. The CMA course duration after graduation is shorter, about two and a half to three years, because graduates can skip Foundation. Extra attempts add six months each. After passing Final and completing training, you apply for ICMAI membership.
CMA exam pattern and course subjects
ICMAI holds CMA exams twice a year, in June and December sessions. Check icmai.in for the current schedule.
- Foundation: business laws and business communication; financial and cost accounting; business mathematics and statistics; business economics and management. The CMA foundation exam is objective type.
- Intermediate: business laws and ethics, financial accounting, direct and indirect taxation, cost accounting, operations and strategic management, corporate accounting and auditing, financial management and business data analytics, and management accounting.
- Final: corporate and economic laws, strategic financial management, direct tax laws and international taxation, strategic cost management, cost and management audit, corporate financial reporting, indirect tax laws and practice, and one elective paper.
You need minimum marks in each paper and in the group aggregate; ICMAI publishes the rule with each exam. The CMA inter exam is where most students feel the jump in difficulty, so start that stage with a clear study plan.
CMA course fees and CMA exam fees
ICMAI charges a registration fee at each stage (Foundation, Intermediate, Final) and a separate exam fee every time you sit. At Intermediate and Final the exam fee is charged per group. All of ICMAI's own fees together usually come to well under ₹1 lakh for a student who passes on time. Fees change, so check the current CMA intermediate exam fee and CMA foundation exam fee on icmai.in before you fill the CMA exam form.
ICMAI offers oral coaching through its chapters and online classes, and private coaching also exists. Coaching costs vary a lot by city. A BCom alongside CMA is common, and government colleges cost much less than private ones.
CMA salary in India
These are broad yearly ranges for qualified CMAs. Industry, city, company size and your skill in costing software and analysis decide where you land.
| Experience | Rough yearly pay | Rough monthly gross |
|---|---|---|
| CMA fresher salary in India | ₹5 to 10 lakh | About ₹40,000 to ₹80,000 |
| 3 to 5 years | ₹8 to 15 lakh | About ₹65,000 to ₹1.25 lakh |
| 8 years and above, senior finance or costing head | ₹15 to 30 lakh or more | Varies widely |
The average salary of a CMA in India sits in the middle of these bands. Manufacturing, power, steel, oil, cement and pharma companies value cost accountants the most, because their costs are complex. CMA salary per month after tax will be lower than gross; check any offer with the calculator below.
CMA jobs and CMA govt jobs
CMA job opportunities in India fall into three groups:
- Industry: cost accountant, management accountant, financial analyst, budgeting and MIS roles, plant finance, internal audit.
- Practice: cost audit, GST and tax work, certification and advisory as a practising cost accountant.
- Government and PSUs: CMA govt jobs are a real strength of this course. Many central PSUs accept CMA (often along with CA) for finance executive and management trainee posts. See PSU jobs.
For ICWA govt jobs through exams, a CMA holder with a degree can sit for SSC CGL, where CMA is a desirable qualification for audit and accounts officer posts, and for bank specialist officer posts such as IBPS SO where finance qualifications are accepted. Cost accountant jobs also come up in central and state finance departments; check the official notice for each post.
CMA vs CA vs CS at a glance
| Point | CMA | CA | CS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main focus | Costing, budgeting, management accounting | Audit, tax, financial reporting | Company law, compliance |
| Can sign | Cost audit reports | Statutory audit reports | Secretarial audit reports |
| Time after 12th | About 3.5 to 4 years | About 4.5 to 5 years | About 3 to 4 years |
| Difficulty | Hard | Very hard | Moderate to hard |
Pros and cons of the CMA career
- Pros: low fees, good fit for PSU and manufacturing jobs, legal role in cost audit, shorter than CA.
- Cons: less known among private employers than CA, starting pay usually below CA, and the best jobs are in industrial cities.
A CMA suits a student who likes numbers, Excel sheets and factory or operations problems more than legal reading.
