The RRB PO salary, meaning the pay of an Officer Scale I (Assistant Manager) in a Regional Rural Bank, starts at a basic pay of ₹48,480 a month. An RRB clerk, called Office Assistant (Multipurpose), starts at ₹24,050. Both get DA, HRA and other allowances on top, so the IBPS RRB salary is much more than the basic. IBPS runs one common exam for these gramin bank jobs every year. Here I explain the posts, pay, exam pattern and growth in simple words.
What is a gramin bank job
Regional Rural Banks, or RRBs, are banks set up to serve villages and small towns. They are jointly owned by the Central Government, a sponsor public sector bank and the state government. After mergers, most states now have a single RRB, such as the gramin banks of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Kerala. You will usually see "Gramin Bank" or "Grameena Bank" in the name.
Work in a gramin bank is close to the ground. You will deal with farmers, self help groups, small shopkeepers, pensioners and students. Crop loans, Kisan Credit Cards, government subsidy schemes and small savings accounts make up much of the business. Branches are mostly in rural and semi urban areas, which suits students who want to work near home. Knowing the local language is a must, because many customers do not speak English or Hindi.
IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection) runs the Common Recruitment Process for RRBs, called CRP RRBs. Through it you can apply for one of these posts:
| Post | Common name | Starting basic pay |
|---|---|---|
| Office Assistant (Multipurpose) | RRB clerk | ₹24,050 |
| Officer Scale I | RRB PO, Assistant Manager | ₹48,480 |
| Officer Scale II (General Banking and Specialist) | Manager | ₹64,820 |
| Officer Scale III | Senior Manager | ₹85,920 |
You can apply for Office Assistant and also for one officer post, but only one among Scale I, II and III.
IBPS RRB PO salary: Officer Scale I pay
The IBPS RRB officer scale 1 salary follows the same officer entry scale as public sector banks, so an RRB PO and an IBPS PO start at the same basic. Here is the structure:
| Pay item | RRB officer scale 1 salary details |
|---|---|
| Starting basic | ₹48,480 a month |
| Scale | ₹48,480 up to ₹85,920 with yearly increments |
| First increments | ₹2,000 each year for the first seven steps |
| DA | A percentage of basic, revised every quarter |
| HRA or lease | As per the town of posting |
| Other benefits | Special allowance, medical aid, leave travel, NPS as per bank rules |
The RRB PO salary in hand is the gross minus NPS, professional tax where it applies, and income tax. Since DA moves every quarter and HRA depends on the town, I do not quote one fixed take home figure. Use the calculator below with the figures from your offer letter.
RRB PO salary after 5 years: with yearly increments alone, the basic rises from ₹48,480 to about ₹58,480. With promotion to Scale II (Manager), which many officers reach after a few years of service, the starting basic of the new scale is ₹64,820.
RRB clerk salary: Office Assistant pay
The IBPS RRB office assistant salary, also searched as IBPS RRB clerk salary, follows the clerical scale used in public sector banks. The RRB clerk salary starts at a basic of ₹24,050 a month and rises to ₹64,480 over the years. The first increments are ₹1,340 a year. DA, HRA and special allowance are added, so the gross is much higher than the basic.
The RRB clerk salary in hand per month again depends on DA and the town. In a village branch HRA is lower, but so is the cost of living. Many of my students from small towns find that an RRB assistant salary lets them save more than a private job in a big city. An Office Assistant can later clear the internal promotion process to become an officer.

IBPS RRB PO exam pattern: prelims, mains and interview
The selection for Officer Scale I has three stages: an online prelims, an online mains and an interview. Final merit uses mains and interview marks in an 80:20 ratio. Prelims marks only decide who goes to mains.
RRB PO pre exam pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 40 | 25 minutes |
| Quantitative Aptitude | 40 | 40 | 20 minutes |
| Total | 80 | 80 | 45 minutes |
RRB PO mains exam pattern
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Reasoning | 40 | 50 |
| Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation | 40 | 50 |
| General Awareness | 40 | 40 |
| English or Hindi Language (choose one) | 40 | 40 |
| Computer Knowledge | 40 | 20 |
| Total | 200 | 200 in 2 hours |
Scale II and Scale III candidates take a single online exam instead of prelims and mains, followed by an interview. Specialist posts get a professional knowledge section in that exam.
RRB clerk exam pattern: prelims and mains
Office Assistant selection has an online prelims and an online mains. There is no interview, and provisional allotment uses mains marks only. The IBPS RRB clerk exam pattern is:
| Stage | Sections (questions / marks) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Prelims | Reasoning 40/40, Numerical Ability 40/40 | 45 minutes |
| Mains | Reasoning 40/50, Computer Knowledge 40/20, General Awareness 40/40, English or Hindi 40/40, Numerical Ability 40/50 | 2 hours |
The RRB clerk mains exam pattern looks a lot like the PO one but questions are easier. Each section has its own timer, and you cannot go back to a closed section. In both exams a wrong answer costs one fourth of that question's marks. The Hindi language option is a big help for students more at ease in Hindi than English.
How to prepare for the IBPS RRB exam
The IBPS RRB exam prelims has only reasoning and maths, so speed in these two decides who moves ahead. From what I have seen, 4 to 6 months of steady study is enough for a focused graduate.
- Month 1 to 2: master arithmetic, simplification, number series and the main puzzle types.
- Month 3: take a timed mock test every other day. Free and paid mock tests are both fine; what matters is honest review of every wrong answer.
- Month 4 onwards: add general awareness with a focus on rural banking, NABARD, crop loans and government schemes, plus computer basics and your chosen language paper.
Since the syllabus overlaps, prepare for IBPS clerk and SBI clerk at the same time. For the full picture, see our bank jobs page and government jobs after 12th for options to plan early.
Promotions and official website
An Office Assistant can become an officer through internal promotion. An Officer Scale I moves to Scale II (Manager), then Scale III (Senior Manager), and higher scales up to General Manager in the RRB. Rural experience is valued, and many RRB officers grow quickly because the banks are smaller and responsibility comes early.
The only official website for the CRP RRBs notification, online form, call letters and results is ibps.in. The individual gramin bank careers pages share joining and document details after allotment, so watch both.
