Courses after 10th fall into three paths: continue school in Science, Commerce or Arts; learn a trade at an ITI; or join a 3 year polytechnic diploma. Each path leads to different jobs, so the choice matters. This guide gives the full after 10th courses list in simple tables, says how long each course takes and how you get in, and tells you honestly which ones lead to good pay and which need 12th first.
Career options after 10th: the three main paths
| Path | Duration | How you get in | Leads to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Class 11 and 12 (Science, Commerce, Arts) | 2 years | School admission on 10th marks | Degrees, NEET, JEE, most graduate jobs |
| Polytechnic diploma in engineering | 3 years | State polytechnic entrance or merit | Junior engineer jobs, or B.Tech from second year |
| ITI trade | 1 or 2 years | State ITI admission on merit | Technician jobs, apprenticeship, railway technical posts |
| Short skill and computer courses | 3 months to 1 year | Direct admission | Entry level office and skill jobs |
Many students do one of the short courses alongside class 11 and 12. That is a smart way to add a skill without losing the school path.
Best course after 10th: how to decide
There is no single best course after 10th for everyone. In my experience, students who choose by these four checks rarely regret it:
- Marks and interest in subjects: strong in maths and science? Science or a polytechnic diploma suits you. Like accounts and business? Commerce. Like reading, history or languages? Arts.
- Money at home: if the family needs you to earn by 18, ITI or a diploma gives a job faster.
- Long term goal: doctor, engineer by degree, CA or civil services all need 12th first.
- Location: check which government ITI, polytechnic or school is near you.

Use the holidays after 10th well
The months between your 10th exams and the start of class 11 or a course are precious. Visit the nearest government ITI and polytechnic and ask about seats, trades and fees. Talk to two or three seniors who took each path. Learn basic computer use and typing, which helps in every career. If you are thinking of Science, revise class 10 maths and science, because class 11 moves fast. And keep copies of your marksheet, caste or income certificate and Aadhaar ready, since every admission form asks for them.

ITI courses list after 10th
ITI courses after 10th teach a trade by hand. You spend most of the time in the workshop. Popular ITI trades include:
- Engineering trades (mostly 2 years): Electrician, Fitter, Mechanic Motor Vehicle, Turner, Machinist, Welder, Electronics Mechanic, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician.
- Non engineering trades (mostly 1 year): Computer Operator and Programming Assistant (COPA), Stenographer, Sewing Technology, Dress Making, Hair and Skin Care.
Some trades also take 8th pass students. After ITI you can do an apprenticeship, apply for railway technical posts, or take a factory job. Read ITI jobs to see where ITI students get placed.
Engineering courses after 10th: polytechnic diploma
A polytechnic diploma is the main route for engineering courses after 10th. It takes 3 years. Common branches are Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering. Admission is through a state entrance test or 10th merit, depending on your state.
The big advantage: after the diploma, you can join B.Tech directly in the second year through lateral entry. Diploma holders can also apply for junior engineer posts in some departments. See diploma courses after 10th for all branches and diploma jobs for where they lead.
Nursing, paramedical and lab technician courses after 10th
This is where students get misled the most, so let me be clear.
Nursing course after 10th: recognised nursing courses like ANM, GNM and B.Sc Nursing need 12th pass. So the right path is to take Science (ideally with Biology) in class 11 and 12 and then apply. Read B.Sc Nursing for details.
Paramedical courses after 10th: a few states run certificate courses for 10th pass students, such as health worker or lab assistant courses. But most recognised paramedical courses, like DMLT, radiology and OT technician, need 12th with Science. See paramedical courses.
Lab technician course after 10th fees and eligibility
The full DMLT diploma usually needs 12th with Science. Some institutes offer shorter lab assistant certificates after 10th, but check that the course is approved by your state paramedical board before you pay. As for fees, government colleges cost much less than private ones, and private fees vary a lot by city. Our DMLT lab technician page explains the full route.
Computer courses after 10th and other skill courses
Short courses help you earn early or add a skill while in school:
- Computer courses after 10th: basic computer and typing, office software, Course on Computer Concepts by NIELIT, Diploma in Computer Applications, basic coding. See computer courses.
- Graphic design and animation: certificate courses in design software. Good if you like drawing. See graphic designer.
- AI course after 10th: start with basic Python and maths. Real AI jobs need a degree later, so treat this as a strong start, not a job course.
- Digital marketing: short courses in social media and content. Read digital marketing.
- Fashion designing: some polytechnics run diplomas in garment and fashion technology after 10th. See fashion designer.
- Hotel management: some government Institutes of Hotel Management run craft certificate courses in food production for 10th pass students. Degree level hotel management needs 12th.
- Merchant navy: the pre-sea General Purpose Rating course approved by the Directorate General of Shipping takes 10th pass students. Check marks and age rules on the DG Shipping website. See merchant navy.
Air hostess and cabin crew training usually needs 12th pass, so plan for it after class 12.
After 10th courses list for girls
Every course on this page is open to girls. Parents often ask me for the best course after 10th pass for girl students. Choices that work well:
- Science with Biology, leading to nursing, pharmacy or medicine.
- Commerce, leading to B.Com, CA or banking.
- ITI trades like COPA, Stenographer, Sewing Technology and Electronics Mechanic.
- Polytechnic diplomas in Computer or Electronics Engineering.
Many government ITIs and polytechnics keep seats for girls and charge low fees. For job options, read government jobs for women.
Best courses after 10th with high salary
Be careful with any promise of high pay right after 10th. A 10th pass with a short course usually starts on modest pay. High salary comes from the next step. These paths grow pay the most:
| Path after 10th | Next step | Where pay can reach |
|---|---|---|
| Science PCM | B.Tech, NDA, pilot training | Engineer and officer pay; see highest paying jobs |
| Science PCB | MBBS, BDS, nursing, pharmacy | Doctor and nursing officer pay |
| Commerce | CA, CS, banking | Professional and bank officer pay |
| Polytechnic diploma | Junior engineer job or B.Tech | Engineer pay after a few years |
| ITI | Apprenticeship, railway technician | Steady technician pay that grows with skill |
If you need a government job soon, 10th pass is enough for posts like SSC MTS, SSC GD and Railway Group D. Read government jobs after 10th and jobs after 10th.
