What a UP Police constable does

A constable, often called sipahi in villages and towns, is the base of the UP Police. Civil police constables work at thanas and outposts: patrolling, guarding lock-ups, serving summons, traffic duty, election duty, fair and festival duty and helping in investigation. PAC constables live in battalions and are sent wherever law and order needs extra force. Jail warders guard prisons under the prisons department. The work is tough, with night duties and postings anywhere in the state, but the job is permanent, respected in the village and comes with a pension and medical support.

Posts filled in UP Police constable bharti

A single UPPRPB notification usually covers several posts. The latest constable notification included:

  • Constable, Civil Police (male and female)
  • Constable, PAC or Armed Police (male)
  • Constable, Special Security Force (male)
  • Women's battalion constable (female)
  • Constable, Mounted Police (male)
  • Jail Warder (male and female)

All of these are at the same pay level, so the UP Police PAC salary and the jail warder salary at entry match the civil police constable. The number of seats in each post changes every cycle, so read the official notice.

UP Police constable salary and allowances

Here is how the UPP salary system works for a new constable:

  • Basic pay: ₹21,700 in the first year at Level 3. An increment of about 3 percent is added every year.
  • Dearness Allowance: the UP government revises it, usually in line with the central rate, a few months after the Centre does.
  • HRA: paid as per UP government rules, based on the city or town of posting. Bigger cities like Lucknow, Kanpur or Ghaziabad give a higher HRA than a small district town. If you live in police lines quarters, HRA is not given.
  • Other allowances: UP Police staff get some duty related allowances as notified by the state, such as for uniform and special postings.
  • Deductions: NPS contribution from basic plus DA, group insurance and income tax where it applies.

So what does the UP Police salary per month come to? Basic ₹21,700 plus a DA that keeps changing, plus HRA based on your posting. The salary box at the top uses the Level 3 basic with the central DA and HRA slabs, so treat it as a close estimate for UP, not an exact payslip. The calculator below lets you change the city class and see how the UP Police constable salary in hand moves.

UP Police salary by post

Many students also search for the UP Police head constable salary, inspector salary and the pay of technical posts. The table gives the usual pay level for each rank in the UP Police.

PostPay levelOld grade payStarting basic (₹ per month)
Constable (Civil Police, PAC, SSF, Mounted), Jail WarderLevel 3₹2,000₹21,700
Head ConstableLevel 4₹2,400₹25,500
ASI (Clerk, Accounts)Level 5₹2,800₹29,200
Sub-Inspector (Civil Police)Level 6₹4,200₹35,400
InspectorLevel 7₹4,600₹44,900

Constable, ASI and Sub-Inspector levels are printed in UPPRPB recruitment notices. Head Constable and Inspector are filled by promotion, so the levels shown for them are the usual ones; confirm them from the latest department order.

Salary of UP Police computer operator and assistant operator

Computer operator, assistant operator (radio branch), programmer and workshop staff are not filled through the constable exam. They come through separate UPPRPB notifications with their own qualification, often a science or computer background. The UP Police computer operator salary and the UP Police assistant operator salary are fixed in those notices, so check the pay level given in the latest advertisement for that post before you apply.

Eligibility and age limit

ConditionRequirement
QualificationClass 12 (intermediate) pass from a recognised board
Age for men18 to 22 years (age counted on the date fixed in the notice)
Age for women18 to 25 years (same counting date as men)
Age relaxationFor reserved categories of Uttar Pradesh as per state rules
Preference (tie-breaker only)As listed in recent notices: NIELIT "O" level computer certificate, two years in the Territorial Army or NCC "B" certificate

The age window for men is narrow, so many boys get only three or four chances. For the latest bharti, the UP government gave a one-time relaxation of three years in the upper age limit for constable and equivalent posts, so always read the age clause of the current notification. Check where you stand with the age tool, and see our list of age limits for government jobs.

UP Police constable exam pattern and selection

Selection happens in this order:

  1. Written exam conducted by UPPRPB
  2. Document verification and Physical Standard Test (PST: height and chest for men, height for women)
  3. Physical Efficiency Test (PET), a timed race that is only qualifying
  4. Final merit list, based on written exam marks
  5. Medical examination

The UP Police exam pattern for the written test has four sections:

SectionQuestionsMarks
General Knowledge3876
General Hindi3774
Numerical and Mental Ability3876
Mental Aptitude, IQ and Reasoning3774
Total150300

Each question carries 2 marks and the paper lasts 2 hours. The rules on negative marking and the minimum qualifying percentage have been changed in some cycles, so read the scheme printed in the latest UPP exam pattern notice before you plan guesswork. General Hindi is the section where UP students score well; do not neglect it.

As per recent notices, the PET is a 4.8 km run in 25 minutes for men and a 2.4 km run in 14 minutes for women. In the PST, the minimum height listed in recent notices is 168 cm for men (160 cm for ST) and 152 cm for women (147 cm for ST), and men also need a minimum chest size. Confirm every standard in the latest notification. The PET is pass or fail, so the written score decides your rank. Start running early, because many students who clear the paper fail on the track.

Training

Selected constables are sent to police training schools and centres across the state for basic recruit training of several months. You learn drill, weapon handling, law, traffic control, first aid, computer basics and how a thana works. The UP Police training salary is the regular Level 3 pay, so you earn from the first day of training. After training you are posted to a district, PAC battalion or jail as per your post.

Promotions and career growth

The usual path is Constable to Head Constable to Sub-Inspector to Inspector, and higher for a few. Promotions come through departmental exams and seniority conducted under UPPRPB and the police department. Constables who are graduates can also attempt the direct UP SI exam, which is at Level 6. Read our Sub-Inspector guide for that route, and the state PCS page if you want to aim for DSP later.

How to prepare

  • Time needed: a student who studies 5 to 6 hours a day usually needs 4 to 6 months for the written test.
  • GK: Indian history, polity, geography, economy, science basics and special topics on Uttar Pradesh (districts, culture, schemes). Read current affairs daily.
  • Hindi: grammar (sandhi, samas, muhavare, vilom, paryayvachi) and reading comprehension. Use class 9 and 10 Hindi grammar books.
  • Maths and reasoning: percentages, average, ratio, time and distance, series, analogy, blood relation, direction sense. Practise daily with a timer.
  • Previous papers: solve at least the last few UP Police papers. Questions repeat in style.
  • Fitness: run every morning, slowly building distance. Keep a check on height and chest early.
